2016 Inverness Sixes | |
01 August 2016 The Inverness Shinty Club Annual Sixes took place on a glorious day at the Bught Park on Sunday 31 July 2016. The men’s teams competed for the Jubilee Shield & Rosedean Shield whilst the women’s teams battled it out for the Alistair Gow Shield. The U14 teams contested the Ken Ross Trophy.
Jubilee Shield Ten teams took part in the Jubilee Shield. The semi-finals saw Caberfeidh defeat Boleskine 2-0 whilst Inverness A beat Kyleakin 5-4 after extra time in the other semi-final. The home side had led 3-0 in that match before Kyleakin fought back to lead 4-3. Inverness eventually came out on top in the extra-time period. Caberfeidh had shown themselves to be the outstanding team on the day; scoring twenty-two goals without replay ahead of the final. They went into a 2-0 lead against Inverness A thanks to Jamie MacKintosh’s opener and a second from Craig Morrison. Arran MacMaster notched a later goal for Inverness, the only goal Cabers had conceded all afternoon, but the Castle Leod side stayed in front to retain the trophy. Caberfeidh captain Craig Morrison was presented with the Jubilee Shield and he also collected the Murdo MacLean Player of the Tournament award. Rosedean Shield Five teams entered the Rosedean Shield. Aberdour ran out eventual winners, beating Inverness B 2-0 in the final. They were captained by Craig Girvan.
Alistair Gow Shield Nine teams competed for the Alistair Gow Shield. Lochaber Ladies beat Glengarry Ladies 3-0 in their semi-final match with holders Skye Camanachd Ladies over-coming Strathglass Ladies by the same score in their last-four meeting. Skye faced Lochaber in the final having already beaten them in their earlier group match. However both teams drew a blank in the final so extra-time was played. There was still no scoring so the outcome was decided by a penalty shoot-out which Skye won 2-1. The Alistair Gow Shield was presented to Skye captain Jenna Beaton by Peter Gow with the Shield played in his late brother’s honour. Skye’s Ilana Paterson was given the Alistair Gow Player of the Tournament award.
Ken Ross Trophy Nine teams took part in the Ken Ross Trophy with Ballachulish U14 the only south representatives. This tournament was based on the U14 age limit for next season rather than the current U14 eligibility. The semi-finals saw Beauly U14 and Lochaber U14 finish goalless after extra-time and Beauly won 2-0 on penalties. Kinlochshiel U14 beat Kingussie U14 2-0 in their semi-final clash. This meant Kinlochshiel and Kingussie, who both finished runners up in their groups, met in the final. Kinlochshiel ran out 2-0 winners and they didn’t concede a goal throughout the whole competition. Arran MacMaster presented the trophy to ‘Shiel captain Andrew MacKenzie.
