Memory Lane – Season 1989 / 90 – Part 32 | |
20 December 2010 North Division 1 Glenorchy 2 Kingussie 8 Kingussie’s North Division 1 title win earned them a Marine Harvest National League Cup Final appearance against South Division 1 winners Glenorchy. The final was played at the Bught Park, Inverness before a disappointingly sparse crowd. South champions Glenorchy put up a good fight in the first half but they were swept away by the potent Kingussie strike force during the second period. Glenorchy won their place in the final with a South Division 1 play-off victory over Oban Camanachd just 5 days earlier and they started well, taking the lead after only 6 minutes through Keith MacIntyre. MacIntyre was causing the Kingussie defence all sorts of problems and when he shot goalwards after 12 minutes, Ian Gibson was first onto the rebound to make it 2-0. Kingussie now knew that they had a game on their hands. Kingussie showed their mettle by increasing the tempo of their play and they levelled the game with 2 goals in 60 seconds midway through the first half. First Angus MacIsaac fired a shot in off the post after 19 minutes and then Dave Borthwick netted from the restart to make it 2-2. Kingussie pinned Glenorchy back and Dave Borthwick went close before Davie Anderson pounced on a poor clearance to put the Kings ahead for the first time in the game. Davie Anderson scored his second on 36 minutes which gave Kingussie a 4-2 lead at the break. Kingussie continued to dominate in the second half and Glenorchy keeper Fergus MacFarlane-Barrow made a string of fine saves. However he was helpless as Kingussie scored 4 more goals. Davie Anderson completed his hat-trick on 50 minutes and Angus MacIsaac then added his second to make it 6-2. Further strikes from Kevin Thain and Russell Jones secured an 8-2 win and the national title. The young Glenorchy side did well, showing much promises for the seasons ahead but they were not match for a Kingussie squad at the peak of their game. The win meant that Kingussie were national champions and North Division 1 runners up Skye Camanachd were left to ponder what might have been. |
