The Shinty Preview – Saturday 4 September 2010. | |
03 September 2010 The winners of the South Junior Cup will be decided this weekend as Marine Harvest South Division 2 sides Glasgow Mid Argyll and Kyles Athletic contest the Bullough Cup Final at the Winterton. Glasgow Mid Argyll and Kyles Athletic meet at the Winterton to contest the Bullough Cup Final. The sides have met twice in the league this season. Kyles were 3-1 winners when the sides met on the opening day of the season at Tighnabruaich. The sides then drew 3-3 at Yoker at the beginning of May. Kyles have had the more successful league campaign, topping the table and winning promotion to Marine Harvest North Division 1. Donald Colville will be Mid Argyll’s main goal threat and Finlay MacMillan will be a key player in defence whilst Peter Mobeck and player / manager Roddy MacColl are the Kyles danger men. The Final throws up at 4pm and Dunkie Kerr is the match referee. The match of the day in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division is the Badenoch derby between Newtonmore and Kingussie at the Eilan. Newtonmore are tied at the top of the table with Fort William on 25 points. Kingussie sit 7 points behind but they have 3 games in hand and could yet make a late run for the title. In fact if Newtonmore, Fort William or Kingussie win all their remaining games, they will be champions. The Kings have come out on top in their 3 meetings this season with Ronald Ross scoring all 8 of their goals so Norman MacArthur will be well aware where his opponent’s danger lies. However ‘More know they are 3 wins from glory so this should be another titanic battle. There is a 1pm throw up at Tighnabruaich where on-form sides Kyles Athletic and Glenurquhart meet. Kyles sit third having amassed 4 wins and a draw in their last 5 league fixtures. The Glen have 2 wins and a draw from their last 3 fixtures however they will be without keeper Stuart MacKintosh for this one as he is away promoting his band Schiehallion’s new CD. Scottish internationalist Jim Barr is also an absentee as are Calum Fraser and Andrew MacDonald. Oban Camanachd have a crucial home match against Lovat at Mossfield. Oban sit in the second relegation spot and trail Bute by 4 points but this is their game in hand. With Bute and Oban Camanachd still to meet, it promises to be a tense finish for both sides. Lovat also know that 2 more points will secure their top flight status and in fact their goal difference is such that a point might do. Lovat will do a late check on Greg Matheson after he went over on his ankle in a Friday night U17 match against Skye Camanachd. The top 2 sides in Marine Harvest North Division 1 are both away from home. Kilmallie travel to Braeview Park to play Beauly and the Canal Parks side should have Peter Carmichael available again. However Martin Graham will be missing as he is running the Ben Nevis Hill Race. Lochaber are also on the road as they head for Castle Leod to play Caberfeidh. Michael Delaney’s side were under-strength when they beat Strathglass last weekend but they should have more options this week. There is a local derby at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree where Skye Camanachd meet Lochcarron. The Islanders have had selection problems this season and Kenny Campbell will miss this one as he is working. Kinlochshiel meet bottom side Strathglass at Kirkton. The form book favours the home side. There is one match in Marine Harvest South Division 1 as Kilmory will try to cement their third place position when they host Ballachulish. Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Glengarry, second place Newtonmore and third place Glenurquhart are not in action. Therefore fourth place Fort William can go top of the table if they beat Kinlochshiel at Kirkton. This is the second consecutive Saturday that these sides have met in the league with the Fort winning 3-0 at An Aird last weekend. This match has a noon throw up. Lovat hold a 2 point advantage over Skye Camanachd and the sides meet at Balgate this weekend. This match has been brought forward a week as the Strathdearn Cup Final between Lovat and Glenurquhart now takes place on Saturday 11 September 2010. The match between Kilmallie and Kingussie at Canal Parks has been postponed. Lochaber trail Marine Harvest North Division 3 leaders Aberdeen University by 4 points but they have 2 games in hand. The Students have completed their league programme and this league cannot be decided by goal difference so a play-off remains a distinct possibility. Lochaber’s match against Lochbroom at Spean Bridge comes into the “must win” category. The home side will be hoping that the recent good weather has helped their pitch after some recent damage Some Lochaber second team regulars were promoted to the first team last weekend and this contributed to their defeat at Caberfeidh. However they will have more like their usual squad for this one. Lochbroom have had a successful season so far and they will be no pushovers. |
