The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 7 August 2010. | |
09 August 2010 The 2010 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final will be between Fort William and Kingussie following the semi finals at Mossfield, Oban on Saturday 7 August 2010. Holders Fort William are through to the final of the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup for the eighth consecutive season following a 4-2 extra time win over Inveraray in the day’s first semi final at Mossfield, Oban. David Robertson’s injury problems meant he started on the bench for Inveraray and Alan MacDonald was suspended. Gary Innes returned to the Fort side after missing the game against Bute but James Clark started on the bench. Neil Robertson was suspended. Drew Ferguson put the Fort ahead on the half hour mark but Grant Griffin squared the tie a minute before the break. Duncan Rodger made a welcome return for Fort William at the break in place of John MacLeod. Rodger moved into the attack later in the game with John MacDonald dropping back to wing back where he played well. A 20 yard strike from Ewan MacMurdo put Inveraray in front 10 minutes into the second half. However Drew Ferguson’s second strike of the day on 61 minutes made it 2-2. Inveraray had the ball in the net once more before the end of the regulation 90 minutes but the effort was ruled out for offside by referee Duncan Kelly and the tie went into extra time. Gordie MacKinnon put the Fort ahead for the second time in the tie on 100 minutes after Inveraray keeper Graeme MacPherson had made a terrific save from a Gary Innes blockbuster and a sweet strike from substitute Victor Smith 10 minutes later give Fort William the chance to win the famous trophy for the fourth consecutive season. Kingussie beat Kyles Athletic 6-2 in the day’s second semi final. The sides met at the same stage last season with Kyles going through to the final following a replay after the first semi final was controversially abandoned with Kingussie leading 4-1. Kyles missed the influence of Donald Irvine, who won the Albert Smith medal in the 2009 final, as he is working abroad. Kyles full back Fraser MacDonald was given the unenviable task of marking Kingussie talisman Ronald Ross. Kingussie manager Steven Borthwick was unable to field Iain Borthwick from the start but Fraser Munro and Ally MacLeod returned to the side. The game was actually closer than the score suggests but clinical finishing from the King’s, including 4 goals from Ronald Ross, put his side through to the final. Ross got Kingussie off to a great start when he opened the scoring on 5 minutes with a blistering drive. Ross added a second on 13 minutes when he made space for himself before sending another rocket shot which powered into the net of the chest of Kenny MacDonald in the Kyles goal. Colin MacColl pulled a goal back for Kyles Athletic on 23 minutes but Thomas Borthwick restored Kingussie’s 2 goal advantage just 3 minutes later when he sent a great shot into the top corner of the net. Kyles enjoyed the early pressure in the second half and they worked the Kingussie defence. Kyles captain Roddy MacDonald made it 3-2 on 62 minutes and the King’s defence had a scare when Ally MacLeod was forced to clear a ball of the goal-line before but Ronald Ross completed his hat-trick 5 minutes later against the run of play to make it 4-2. This deflated Kyles and further strikes from Fraser Munro on 88 minutes and Ross’ fourth a minute from time, when he was left unmarked, gave the scoreline an unfair slant but you won’t hear anyone in Kingussie complaining. There was just one match in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division as Glenurquhart welcomed Glasgow Mid Argyll to Blairbeg in the knowledge that they lost 1-0 to the Glasgow side earlier in the season. In the end it was Glenurquhart who secured a couple of vital points with a 4-0 win. John Barr, who seems to be enjoying a more advanced role in the side, opened the scoring with a shot from distance on 19 minutes. Neale Reid put the home side 2-0 up at the break when he followed up a rebound after and initial save by Mid Argyll keeper Oliver on 28 minutes. Eddie Tembo reacted quickest to a half chance and made it 3-0 on 72 minutes and Neale Reid added his second on 79 minutes. The victory takes Glenurquhart 5 points clear of second bottom Oban Camanachd in the table. Kinlochshiel missed out on the chance to go top of Marine Harvest North Division 1 when they went down 5-3 to Kilmallie at Canal Parks. Shiel were without buckshee back John Don MacKenzie who served the second game of a 2 match ban following his sending off in the Balliemore Cup Final. Shiel were up against a determined Kilmallie side that was desperate for the points after recently dropping 3 out of 4 against the other two west coast sides, Lochcarron and Skye Camanachd. Fraser Massie gave the home side a 3 minute lead but Shiel’s Neil Fraser made it 1-1 on 11 minutes. The visitors took the lead through Keith MacRae on 21 minutes but a John Stewart goal on the stroke of half time ensured the sides went in to the break all square. Stewart added his second on 70 minutes and Peter MacIntyre made it 4-2 just 7 minutes later. Finlay MacRae looked to have set up a thrilling climax to the game when he made it 4-3 on 89 minutes but Kilmallie went straight up the park and John Stewart completed his hat-trick in the last minute. League leaders Lochaber were not in action. Skye Camanachd threw away a 2-0 lead to share the points with Inverness in the noon throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Kilmory won 4-3 when the sides met on the opening day of the season with David MacAllister scoring twice and they did the double over their rivals thanks to a brace each from Hal Jones and Duncan MacBrayne and strikes from Alex Cunningham and Ian Robertson. Brian MacCallum, a David Devine double and a Lewis Cameron effort replied for Rovers. The match between bottom side Inveraray and Ballachulish at the Winterton was postponed because of the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup semi finals. The match between Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Glengarry and Kingussie at the Dell was also postponed. A Stuart MacRae double helped Kinlochshiel beat Kilmallie 3-2 at Kirkton. MacRae put Shiel ahead after 25 minutes but a Robbie MacFadyen goal got the visitors level just 3 minutes later. Scott Kennedy returned to the side and restored Shiel’s advantage just 5 minutes from the break. Stuart MacRae added his second on 50 minutes to make it 3-1 although a Mark Graham strike 10 minutes from time reduced the deficit. An 83 minute Allan MacKinnon goal gave Skye a 3-2 win over an under-strength Glenurquhart side at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Leighton Reid and Bob Ferguson replied for the visiting Islanders. In Marine Harvest North Division 3, Lochcarron were 6-5 winners over league leaders Aberdeen University at Battery Park. Lochcarron were boosted by the inclusion of Ian MacKenzie, Andrew Slaughter and Gregor Cushnie. Aberdeen included club stalwart Jamie Bell in their side. Veteran Ian MacKenzie netted 4 times for the home side and youngster Kieran Stark got the other to put Lochcarron 5-1 up with Kenny MacLeod replying for Aberdeen. However the Students fight-back started with a terrific Kenny MacLeod goal – his second of the game – to make it 5-2. Elliot Moir scored twice and Jamie Beaton netted to make it 5-5 before a late goal from Ian MacKenzie – his fifth of the game – gave Lochcarron the points. One of the features of the game was a good tussle between Lochcarron defender David MacCuish and former Skye Camanachd player Kenny MacLeod who was in the visiting attack. Ardnamurchan were unable to fulfill their fixture against second top Lochaber at Spean Bridge so the home side was awarded the points. The match between Inverness and Strathglass at the Bught has was postponed. |
