Kilmory 2 Skye Camanachd 6. | |
11 April 2010 Skye Camanachd are through to the quarter finals of the Balliemore Cup following their 6-2 win over Kilmory at Lochgilphead on Saturday 10 April 2010.
Skye Camanachd first team manager Aonghas MacDonald welcomed forwards Somhairle MacDonald and Kenny Campbell back in to the side but defender Allan MacLeod and forwards Allan MacKinnon and Ally MacLennan were unavailable. John Moir is recovering well from an ankle injury he but wasn’t risked. The Skye Camanachd bench was made up of 3 players from the club’s 2009 London Shield winning side, Danny Morrison, Stewart Grant and Neil MacVicar.
This was the first meeting between the sides and Kilmory, who lined up with a side containing a mixture of youth and experience, started well as Skye found it difficult to get their passing game going on the uneven surface.
In fact it was against the run of play when Skye took the lead on 13 minutes. The goal came from Kenny Campbell who was playing is first match since Skye’s opening game of the season against Beauly. Campbell dribbled the ball round Kilmory keeper David MacFadyen before slotting it into the back of the net from a tight angle.
A bullet shot from Skye full forward Dougie Rankin flew into the net to make it 2-0 on 24 minutes.
Kenny Campbell added his second 10 minutes before the break when he collected a through ball from Kerr Gibb and ran in on goal before finishing confidently.
Dougie Rankin scored his second goal 5 minutes into the second half with a great strike. He smashed the ball first time, 25 yards from goal, to give MacFadyen no chance.
Kilmory pulled a goal back in controversial circumstances on 53 minutes. Hal Jones was credited with the strike although the Skye defenders were adamant that the ball did not cross the line. Keeper Jamie Gannon was so incensed by the decision that he was booked by referee Dougie Cameron for his protests.
Skye’s Jamie MacDonald had been feeling his hamstring tight from early in the match and the buckshee back was forced to come off on 65 minutes. Aonghas MacDonald introduced Neil MacVicar at wing centre with Shockie MacLennan slotting in at buckshee back. MacVicar went on to have a good game in what was his first appearance for the senior side.
Danny Morrison replaced Alan Palmer 5 minutes later and Stewart Grant came on for Kerr Gibb shortly after as MacDonald ensured his young substitutes had a good run out.
Hal Jones netted his second with a fine finish on 75 minutes to make it 4-2.
Skye were enjoying their best period of the game and had it not been for 5 or 6 outstanding saves from Kilmory keeper David MacFadyen, especially from Kenny Campbell, the winning margin would have been much greater.
Somhairle MacDonald made it 5-1 on 77 minutes and he later had a second effort correctly disallowed for offside.
By this time, Gilleasbuig MacDonald had been pushed forward into the attack with Dougie Rankin taking up the full centre role. MacDonald justified that switch 5 minutes from time when he collected a through pass and rammed the ball into the net to complete a 6-2 win.
Skye will now face Marine Harvest South Division 1 side Taynuilt at home in the Balliemore Cup quarter finals on Saturday 15 May 2010.
