12 July 2009 There was plenty of league and Sutherland Cup action on Saturday 11 July 2009. Scottish Hydro National Premier Division leaders Kingussie had Ronald Ross back in their starting line up for Glenurquhart’s visit to the Dell and it took him just 30 minutes to open the scoring. Ross added a second 10 minutes later and young Ryan Borthwick made it 3-0 a minute before the break. Ross took his tally to 4 with goals in 59 and 80 minutes whilst Gregor MacCormack hit a consolation strike fro the Glen 2 minutes from the end. The Kings will be pleased with this win as they were without Louis Munro and Fraser Munro who were at T in the Park and the Glen had full centre Lewis MacLennan back in the side. The Kings leap-frog their opponents into second place in the table and sit 3 points behind Newtonmore remain the only side unbeaten in the league following their 3-3 draw with Kyles Athletic at Tigh na Bruach. The sides drew at the Eilan earlier in the season and this time Danny MacRae gave the visitors the perfect start with a goal in 2 minutes. Mathew MacColl levelled after 20 minutes but MacRae went on to complete a first half hat-trick with goals in 30 and 38 minutes. ‘More still had both points when Grant Irvine reduced the deficit to a single goal after 77 minutes but a Robbie MacLeod goal 3 minutes from the end delighted the home fans and earned Kyles a share of the points. Newtonmore are now 5 points behind league leaders Oban Camanachd and Glenorchy meet in the 6pm throw up at Mossfield. The match went 75 minutes without a goal before Daniel MacIntyre scored for the home side to give them a priceless 2 points. The win lifts Oban Camanachd into third place on 11 points and they can tie with It looks like we are in for an exciting title race with Strathglass move into second place in Marine Harvest North Division 1 following their 8-0 win over Caberfeidh join Strathglass and Kilmallie on 10 points in second place after their hard fought 2-0 win over Lochcarron at Castle Leod. The visitors had the best of the first half and David MacCuish, promoted to the senior side, probably went closest to opening the scoring for Lochcarron. Cabers rarely troubled Kenny Ross in the Lochcarron goal throughout the first period. Home nerves were eased somewhat just 6 minutes into the second half when Kevin Bartlett opened the scoring. Cabers had to wait until the 89 minute to seal the points and their second goal came from the caman of Kirk Taylor. In Marine Harvest South Division 1, leaders Lochside Rovers were held to a surprise derby draw against second bottom Oban Celtic. David Duffy, Sandy MacLeod and Neil Carmichael were Celtic’s scorers. The draw means that Lochside have only taken a point from their last 2 matches after winning their first 7 consecutive league matches The Lochside result gave some hope to Kilmory’s title chances and they took full advantage by edging out a strong Inveraray side at home by the odd goal in 5. Hal Jones, Alistair Cunningham and Steven Gilmour scored for Kilmory whilst Neil Campbell and Grant Griffen replied for the visitors. Kilmory now sit 5 points behind leaders Lochside with a game in hand. Bottom club Tayforth made the trip to Ballachulish and their 4-3 victory gave them their second win of the season – their first was last weekend. Kingussie moved into second place in Marine Harvest North Division 2 with an 8-1 win over Caberfeidh in the 12 noon throw up at the Dell. Martin Dallas helped himself to a hat-trick and Thomas Borthwick and Russell Menzies scored doubles. Ricky Grant completed the Kings scoring whilst Andrew MacMaster scored a consolation for Cabers. Skye Camanachd and Newtonmore shared the points at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. After some good early exchanges, it was Newtonmore who drew first blood when Mark MacDonald fired a shot from the right across Skye keeper Scott MacLeod into the net. Almost straight from the throw up, ‘More doubled their lead when full forward David Wilde received a chest high pass with his back to goal, flicked the ball and turned and sent a sensational volley into the net. It was a strike that earned applause from the ‘More support and the Skye fans who could appreciate such a fine goal. Skye could easily have folded at this stage but they responded in style when Danny Morrison played a one-two with Allan MacKinnon and he found Kieran Roberts who fired the ball low into the net. Just before half time, Allan MacKinnon slipped his marker and sent a backhand bullet past The league seems to be splitting into two distinct parts with 6 points separating fifth place Lovat and sixth place Skye Camanachd. Doubles from Alec MacVicar and Willie Gillies gave Marine Harvest South Division 2 leaders Taynuilt the points at Yoker against Glasgow Mid Argyll. David Smith and Donald Colville replied for the home side. Strachur confirmed their second place in the table with a narrow win at third place Col Glen in the league’s match of the day. Andy Robertson and Andy Mirrelles scored for Strachur whilst Jamie Sutton replied for the home side. Aberdour had an early start as they traveled to Ballachulish for a 12 noon throw up. However it was a profitable journey as they returned home with both points following their 6-5 win. A Stuart Stirling double and a Gordon MacMillan goal helped Marine Harvest North Division 3 leaders The match between Lochbroom and Lochcarron at Battery Park did not go ahead as the home side had team raising difficulties. Lochbroom were awarded the points. The students remain top but second place Lochbroom are 3 points behind with 2 games in hand. |
