31 May 2009 There was a mixture of league and cup action on Saturday 30 May 2009. Kingussie progressed to the MacPhee & Partners MacAulay Cup semi finals, beating Kilmallie 8-2 at the Dell. Ronald Ross was the main man, following up last week’s historic achievement in clocking up 1,000 senior goals by scoring a double hat-trick – one in each half - and taking his total to 1,007! The scoring in the first half was fairly even though and Kilmallie actually took the lead with international forward John Stewart finding the net after 11 minutes. Ross equalised 10 minutes later and young Ryan Borthwick, in for the injured Kevin Thain, gave the Kings the lead on the half hour mark. Ross made it 3-1 after 36 minutes but Trevor Jackson pulled a goal back 5 minutes before the break only for Ross to complete his first half hat-trick 3 minutes later and restore Kingussie’s two goal advantage. Kingussie showed their class in the last 20 minutes though. Ross made it 6-2 with a double in 70 and 72 minutes and Paul Gow made it 3 goals in 5 minutes with a 74 minute strike. A Ronald Ross penalty a couple of minutes from the end took his personal total to 6 and Kingussie’s tally to 8. Kingussie will play Glenurquhart at the Dell in the quarter finals. National Premier League played Marine Harvest North Division 1 when Strathglass travelled to Strathglass got off to a good start at Oban Camanachd romped to a 9-0 win over Glasgow Mid Argyll at Mossfield. Aidan MacIntyre, Scott MacMillan, Iain MacMillan and Brian MacCallum all hit doubles. David MacInnes scored their other goal and Oban Camanachd now play Glenorchy at Dalmally in the quarter finals. Inveraray are through to the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final to face Oban Camanachd at Old Anniesland, Glasgow on Saturday 27 June 2009. They earned their place in the final with an exciting win over Lovat won the final remaining Balliemore Cup semi final place with a 3-1 win over Lochcarron at Balgate. James MacPherson gave the home side the lead after 25 minutes but Darren Coyle levelled the match just 5 minutes later. Lovat won the tie with 2 goals in the last 2 minutes of the first half. MacPherson scored his second on 44 minutes and Greg Matheson made it 3-1 right on the half time whistle. Lovat will play Strathglass in the semi finals. Whilst Lovat were winning a semi final place, Kinlochshiel won through to the Balliemore Cup Final with a 3-1 win over Kilmory at Kirkton. Scott MacLean gave Shiel a 14 minute lead and Keith MacRae doubled their advantage just 3 minutes late. Kilmory fought back though and Calum McKinven pulled a goal back for the visitors after 21 minutes. Gordon MacDonald scored the decisive third goal to give Shiel a place in the final once again. Glenorchy gave a decent account of themselves against league leaders Glenurquhart move to the dizzy heights of second place with an impressive 5-0 win over Kyles Athletic at Blairbeg. Neale Reid gave the Glen a half time lead after 28 minutes and Ben Hosie, promoted to the first team after last week’s hat-trick for the second team against Skye Camanachd, made it 2-0 after 65 minutes. Billy Urquhart made it 5 goals in 3 games just 5 minutes later. Goals in 84 and 88 minutes from David Girvan and Gregor MacCormack sealed the points. Skye Camanachd had the chance to extend their lead at the top Marine Harvest North Division 1 when they played Caberfeidh at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. However a strike from Ally MacLennan in 84 minutes dented their title hopes and the 2 points lift Cabers up into third place in the league. A double from David MacLean in 20 and 35 minutes gave Beauly an early lead over Inverness at In Marine Harvest South Division 1, runaway league leaders Lochside Rovers won 4-1 at Ballachulish to preserve their 100% league record. Martin Duncan gave the home side the lead after 5 minutes but Robert Alexander levelled a couple of minutes later. Johnnie Will continued his good goal scoring form with a double after 15 and 42 minutes and Lewis Cameron completed the scoring 5 minutes from the end. The Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup semi finalists are now known following Saturday’s quarter final ties. Caberfeidh travelled to Blairbeg to play in form Glenurquhart and found themselves on the end of a 6-1 defeat. The Glen opened the scoring after 18 minutes through 13 year old Ewan Brady. David Smart made it 2-0 after 23 minutes and Calum Fraser made it 3 a minute later. Andrew MacMaster pulled a goal back for Cabers after 78 minutes but Paul MacKintosh continued his return from injury with an 82 minute strike. David Smart completed his second hat-trick in 2 weeks with goals in 85 and 87 minutes. Newtonmore played a goalless first half against Marine Harvest League Division 2 Lovat had a comfortable 9-1 win over Marine Harvest League Division 3 side Kincraig at Balgate. Owen Ferguson opened the scoring for Lovat in the first minute and Jamie Matheson scored their second after 9 minutes. Iain Grant pulled a goal back for Kincraig after 11 minutes but Martin Anderson restored their 2 goal advantage a minute later. Owen Ferguson completed his hat-trick after 32 and 40 minutes and a double from Jimmy MacPherson after 41 and 44 minutes made the interval score 7-1 to the home side. MacPherson went on to take his tally to 4 with 65 and 70 minute goals. A double from Peter Mobeck put Marine Harvest North Division 1 side Kyles Athletic through at the expense of Marine Harvest North Division 2 Kingussie at Tigh na Bruach. Thomas Borthwick scored for the Kings but it wasn’t enough. Kyles play Lovat in the semi finals. In the only match played in Marine Harvest North Division 2, a Ken Henderson strike a minute after the break gave Glengarry victory over Kilmallie at Canal Parks. In Marine Harvest South Division 2, bottom club Ballachulish suffered a 6-0 home defeat against Aberdour move up to fifth place with a 3-0 win at Yoker against Glasgow Mid Argyll. Joe Dunton scored a double and Ruairidh Reid scored the other. Glenorchy and Col Glen played out a goalless draw at Dalmally. Second placed Taynuilt maintained their 100% record with a win over Strachur in the division’s top match. Willie Gillies gave Taynuilt the lead with a goal 3 minutes into the first half and another 3 minutes into the second half. Kenny MacKechnie made it 3-0 after 70 minutes and although Ronnie Campbell scored for the visitors after 78 minutes, Sean Kelly made it 4-1 just 8 minutes from the end. Strachur’s lead is cut to a single point and Taynuilt have 4 games in hand. Marine Harvest North Division 3 continued its reputation of providing high scoring matches with 28 goals in the 4 matches played. Jamie MacFadyen scored a couple of minutes later to make the score 5-2 and Steven Bellshaw added another after 75 minutes. MacFadyen bagged his second after 78 minutes and John Stirling pulled a goal back for the visitors in what ended up a 7-3 win for the league’s second placed team. 3 goals in the last 15 minutes gave Lochcarron victory over Ardnamurchan at Battery Park. David MacCuish scored his second in 2 weeks to give them the vital break-through after 75 minutes and a 5 minute double late in the game from David MacKenzie sealed the points. |
