18 May 2009 Three more sides are through to the Hydro Electric Camanachd Cup quarter finals following the fixtures played on Saturday 16 May 2009. It took penalties to separate Camanachd Cup giants Kyles Athletic and Newtonmore at Tigh na Bruach. Duncan Kerr gave the home side the lead after just 2 minutes only for David Cheyne to level the tie 3 minutes later. The next 115 minutes brought no further goals so the tie was settled from the spot with Kyles running out 3-2 winners. A Scott MacMillan double just after half time saw Oban Camanachd progress into the quarter finals. MacMillan has been in good form of late and his brace in 47 and 49 minutes saw off the challenge from Lochaber. Oban Camanachd will now host Kyles Athletic at Mossfield in the quarter finals. The MacPhee & Partners MacAulay Cup first round saw a quick double from Billy Urquhart after 7 and 10 minutes give Glenurquhart an early lead over Lovat at Drum na Drochit. The Glen went out of the Camanachd Cup to Marine Harvest North Division 1 side Kinlochshiel and they were keen not to make the same mistake against Lovat who are from the same league. Raymond Rennie pulled a goal back for Lovat 5 minutes before half time but Glenurquhart went on to win the tie. A Kieran MacKay hat-trick helped Glenorchy to a 6-3 win over Kilmory at Dalmally. Des McNulty, John Surtain and Stuart Scott scored their other goals. Steven Gilmour, Andrew Cunningham and David MacAllister replied for the visitors. Kyles Athletic had a convincing 7-1 win over Kinlochshiel at Tigh na Bruach in the Sutherland Cup second round. Alistair MacKay was their hero with 5 goals and Colin MacDonald added a double. Kyles will host Kingussie in the quarter finals. Kingussie closed the gap on National Premier League leaders Skye Camanachd go 3 points clear at the top of Marine Harvest North Division 1 with a fine derby win over Kinlochshiel at Kirkton. First half strikes from Somhairle MacDonald and Dougie Rankin gave the Islanders a half time lead and although Neil Fraser replied in the second half, Skye held on to secure a vital two points. Caberfeidh had their second league win of the season against Inverness at the Lochside Rovers extended their lead at the top of Marine Harvest South Division 1 with a 5-3 win over Inveraray at Winterton. Johnny Will and David Stevens hit doubles for the visitors and Lewis Cameron scored the other. Neil Campbell, Lewis MacNicol and Stuart Anderson found the net for the home side. Oban Celtic ran into a two goal lead at Ballachulish. Alan Miller and David Duff scored a goal in each half but the home side rallied and a Martin Duncan strike after 65 minutes got them back into the match. David MacPhee notched the equaliser for Ballachulish just 4 minutes from time. Glenurquhart maintained their lead at the top of the table with an impressive 6-1 over Newtonmore at the Eilan. Ewen Brady and Calum Fraser both hit hat-tricks for the Glen and Chris Sellar replied for ‘More. Kingussie ran out 4-2 winners at Castle Leod against Caberfeidh. Rory Borthwick gave the Kings the lead after 17 minutes but two goals in 2 minutes from Alan Ross in 38 and 39 minutes gave the home side the half time advantage. It took Kingussie until 15 minutes from the end to draw level and it was Rory Borthwick again who did the damage. 14 year old Thomas Borthwick put the visitors ahead after 83 minutes and Rory Borthwick went on to complete his hat-trick 3 minutes from the end. Skye Camanachd twice came from behind to beat Kilmallie at Pairc na Laoch, Portree. Mark Graham gave Kilmallie the lead Mark Graham gave the visitors the lead after 15 minutes when the Skye defence failed to clear a ball into the danger area. Iain Grant scored from a Neil MacVicar corner to leave the scores level at the interval. A shot from distance from Kilmallie full centre Robbie MacGregor after 54 minutes evaded Scott MacLeod in the Skye goal and gave the visitors the lead one more. Skye responded well though and after 61 minutes Iain Grant linked up well with Iain Morrison and Neil MacVicar was just unable to get on the end of Morrison’s cross. The resultant clearance went straight to Peter Gordon and his rocket shot gave Toye no chance. The Skye winner came just a minute later when Iain Grant played in Peter Gordon. Gordon slipped the ball to Neil MacVicar and he sent a glorious 30 yard drive low past Toye to win the points for Skye. A couple of terrific saves at important times from Skye keeper Scott MacLeod were a major contribution to the Islanders win. Strachur extended their lead at the top on Marine Harvest South Division 2 with a 2-0 home win over Glenorchy. Alistair Mirlees gave them the lead 5 minutes before the break and Ronnie Campbell secured the points 8 minutes from the end. Glasgow Mid Argyll ran out 6-1 winners over Col Glen at Yoker. Craig Anderson scored twice and Andrew MacFarlane, Donald Colville, Gary Luke and Ewan Forsyth were also on target. There were goals galore in Marine Harvest North Division 3 with a total of 36 efforts finding the back of the net in the 4 matches played. The surprise result of the day was undoubtedly bottom club Kincraig’s 3-3 home draw with leaders Second placed Lochbroom had an emphatic 9-2 home win over Ardnamurchan. Aaron Matheson scored 2 goals in each half to take his personal tally to 4 goals. Jamie MacFadyen also found the net in the first half. Euan Mowat fired in a double for the visitors but goals from Jamie MacFadyen, Steven Bellshaw, Cameron MacRae, Mark Renwick and James Dorrans sealed the win. Third placed Beauly also hit 9 against the visiting Lochaber side and they now leap-frog the Strathglass were the third side in the division to score 9 when they beat |
