Skye Camanachd U17 6 Lovat U17 0. | |
30 April 2009 Skye Camanachd U17s ran out 6-0 winners in their opening London Shield match against Lovat at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Thursday 30 April 2009. Skye Camanachd U17 coach Davie MacVicar named a strong side and his team went on the attack from the off. Danny Morrison had a good shot saved by Lovat keeper Chris MacCallum after 5 minutes. However with 10 minutes gone, Neil MacVicar played a long ball forward from midfield. Danny Morrison collected the ball and played in Jordan Murchison and he gave the young Islanders the lead. A minute later Murchison returned the complement as his pass found Danny Morrison who netted for 2-0. Skye Camanachd forced a series of corners throughout the remainder of the first half and MacCallum saved well from Iain Morrison, Danny Morrison and Paul MacKinnon. He also did well on a one on one with John Gillies. Lovat full back Tom Collings suffered a broken finger at the end of the first half and he was replaced at the interval. Lovat were forced to pull full centre Greg Matheson back into defence and this limited their attacking options in the second half. Skye increased their lead 10 minutes into the second half when Martin Bruce’s clearance from defence found Jordan Murchison on the Skye left. Murchison’s cross played in Neil MacVicar and he fired the ball into the net. Just a couple of minutes later, MacVicar, who by now had been pushed into the forward line, collected another cross from the left and scored his second and Skye's fourth goal. Skye continued to pressure the Lovat defence and Stewart Grant was dominating the centre line. Danny Morrison almost increased their lead with an outrageous over-head flick which hit the frame of the goal. Moments later a great run and shot from Iain Morrison fizzed just wide. Then 20 minutes into the second half, Danny Morrison again set up Jordan Murchison to make the scored 5-0. Neil MacVicar capped a fine return to the shinty field 10 minutes from the end when he completed his hat-trick after his ball into the D evaded everyone and nestled past MacCallum into the back of the net. There were many good performances in the Skye side but Neil MacVicar and Iain Morrison were stand-outs. Paul MacKinnon and Jordan Murchison always looked dangerous and the defence of Iain Grant, Neil John Campbell, Shaun Hedley and Martin Bruce protected Jamie Patterson to the extent that the keeper hardly had a safe to make. To be fair to Lovat, injury meant that they had lost a couple of players who played for their school team in the Wade Cup Final earlier in the week. The injury to Tom Collings, resulting in Greg Matheson coming into defence, also disrupted their plans and they finished the match with a couple of primary school age players on the park. They never gave up.
