The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 2 June 2012 | |
06 June 2012 The Orion Premiership sides entered the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup as the second round took place on Saturday 2 June 2012.
Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Newtonmore 7 Beauly 0 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup holders Newtonmore started their defence of shinty’s most famous trophy with a 3pm throw up against Beauly at the Eilan. This was one of three clashes between sides from the Orion Group Premiership and Marine Harvest North Division 1. Newtonmore’s Danny MacRae remained on the sidelines but Chris Sellar was back after a two match ban. Beauly turned in an impressive second half performance against Inverness the previous weekend when they scored five goals in a 6-1 win with Marc MacLauchlan getting three of them. Newtonmore were 5-0 winners when the sides met at Braeview Park in the Co-operative MacTavish Cup earlier in the season. The first half was goalless but Newtonmore upped the ante in the second period. Ackie MacRae got the opener a couple of minutes after the break and Chris Sellar made it 2-0 just 2 minutes later. ‘More then scored three goals in three minutes to end the tie as a contest. Glen MacKintosh hit a brace on 66 and 67 minutes and Ackie MacRae got his second 60 seconds later to make it 5-0. ‘More captain John MacKenzie scored the sixth on 82 minutes and Evan Menzies, who scored a hat-trick for the second team in the noon win over Skye Camanachd, made it 7-0 with a strike 5 minutes from time. This tie was recorded for the Camanachd Association’s video archive. Kinlochshiel 1 Kingussie 1 Kinlochshiel and Kingussie will have to do it all over again after a 1-1 draw at Kirkton. The sides met at the same venue earlier in the season in the Co-operative MacTavish Cup when a Ronald Ross inspired Kingussie ran out 6-2 winners. Kinlochshiel boss Johnston Gill was at a loss to explain his side’s collapse against Inveraray last weekend and he was certainly looking for a positive reaction from his players in this match. Captain Gordie MacDonald made a surprise return for the home side after being dogged by knee problems. Keith MacRae started despite suffering from a broken thumb but midfielder Steven Callander was missing. Kingussie boss Russell Jones was hit with a couple of suspension blows as Lee Bain missed out because of his red card last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Newtonmore and Fraser Munro served a one match ban because of a points accumulation. Throw up was to be at noon but it was delayed almost an hour as Kingussie turned up without their medical box, tops and spare camans. They started the game in Inter Milan style tops borrowed from Kyle football club as Dallas Young raced across the Highlands (within the speed limit of course) with the missing pieces of kit. However Kingussie did not forget to take Ronald Ross and he put them ahead after just 7 minutes when he fired past Graham Kennedy. However the home side responded and John MacRae made it 1-1 on 37 minutes. There was no further scoring although Kinlochshiel’s Calum MacLean could have won it for his side but he just failed to get onto the end of a cross at the edge of the D so the tie goes to a replay at the Dell. This match was recorded for the Camanachd Association’s archive. Kilmallie 3 Fort William 1 Kilmallie beat local rivals Fort William 3-1 at the Canal Parks. This was the second successive Saturday that these sides had met at the same venue with the Fort running out 3-1 winners in the previous weekend’s league encounter. Kilmallie were boosted by John Stewart’s return in attack following a two match ban. However Martin Stewart served a one match ban for the home side and Euan Stoddart was working off-shore once again. Stevie Stewart returned from suspension for Fort William but Duncan Rodger and Bryan Simpson were both banned. Gary Innes was again unavailable because of commitments with his band Manran and wing centre Arran MacPhee had a broken wrist. Daniel Stewart put the Fort ahead on 15 minutes but Kilmallie captain John Stewart levelled on 24 minutes. Kilmallie dominated the second half and goals from the excellent Michael Rodger on 50 minutes and Liam MacDonald on 65 minutes put them through to the next round with a morale boosting 3-1 lead. Skye Camanachd 2 Glenurquhart 1 Skye Camanachd pulled off a shock 2-1 over Glenurquhart at Pairc nan Laoch on the 22nd anniversary of their 1990 Camanachd Cup win. The sides met in a titanic Balliemore Cup semi-final battle last season which ended 3-3 after extra-time. Bute eventually won on penalties before going on to lift the trophy. Lochaber manager Michael Delaney was without the services of Hughie Innes, Scott Patterson and Donald MacRae – all were working. Bute boss Barry Martin was minus Scottish international Iain MacDonald who missed out with a hamstring problem. Ben Delaney opened the scoring for the home side with a 15 minute strike. Stuart Callison added a second 5 minutes before the break and he went on to complete his hat-trick with goals on 47 and 82 minutes to seal a fine 4-0 win. This was one of four North v South ties and Lochaber are fast becoming one of this season’s cup specialists. They are not in action again until the Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 16 June 2012. Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Kyles Athletic 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll earned a replay after a resolute performance against Kyles Athletic in their 3pm throw up at Yoker. Exiting last season’s Camanachd Cup at the semi-final stage to eventual winners Newtonmore was a big disappointment for Kyles and they were determined to go a step further this year. When Robbie MacLeod gave Kyles a first half lead on 26 minutes, it looked like the favourites would progress to the next round. However GMA defended well and soaked up a lot of pressure before leveling through Andy Mathie 8 Minutes from time to earn a replay at Tighnabruaich. Inveraray 4 Strathglass 0 Strathglass put up a good fight in their 3pm meeting with Inveraray at the Winterton before eventually going down 4-0. Inveraray can be a formidable outfit on their own pitch but a battling first half performance from the visitors kept the tie scoreless at the break. However Chris Crawford scored twice on 47 and 84 minutes to put Inveraray 2-0 in front. Garry MacPherson added a third on 75 minutes and Ruairidh Graham rounded off the 4-0 win with a goal on full time. Lovat 6 Kilmory 0 Lovat were too strong for Kilmory at Balgate. Lovat started as favourites and Drew Howie and Michael MacKenzie have been in good form at the back recently for Allan MacRae’s side whilst Lorne MacKay continues to impress in midfield. Kilmory are in a mid-table position in Marine Harvest South Division 1 and they fell behind after just 2 minutes when referee Evan MacRae awarded the home side a penalty and Greg Matheson converted from the spot. Lorne MacKay made it 2-0 on 25 minutes and Lovat full forward Martin Bell got in on the act with a 34 minutes strike to make it 3-0. Owen Ferguson got Lovat’s fourth just 5 minutes before the interval and they took this advantage into the break. Greg Matheson got his second 5 minutes after the restart and Martin Bell did like-wise on 62 minutes to round off a 6-0 victory. Indeed had it not been for some good saves from Kilmory keeper Ewen Carmichael, the winning margin could have been greater.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Inverness 1 Caberfeidh 4 The only match in this division saw Inverness and Caberfeidh clash in a tousy battle at the Bught Park. Inverness co-managers Stevie Munro and James MacDougall stepped down prior to the game, citing work commitments. However both have agreed to look after the team until a replacement is found. The Capital side does not have a fixture until Saturday 23 June 2012 by which time Club President Peter Gow hopes to have a replacement in post. Caberfeidh were on a run of three consecutive league wins which has lifted them from bottom of the table to third place. Kevin Bartlett put Cabers ahead after just 2 minutes. However Daniel Palombo levelled on 14 minutes and the sides were all square at the break. Inverness had the chance to go a goal in front a minute into the second half when they were awarded a penalty by referee Calum Duff. However Conner Golabeck was unable to convert from the spot. Matters took a turn for the worse for the Capital side a minute later when Davie Glass was shown a straight red card for retaliation which sparked a flaire-up. Stuart Krzyzanoski scored twice on 70 and 75 minutes to put Cabers 3-1 ahead and Calum Morrison added a fourth just 3 minutes later to seal a 4-1 win which takes Caberfeidh to the top of the table, above Skye Camanachd and Lochaber who were in Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup action.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Oban Camanachd 3 Glenorchy 0 Under-strength league leaders Oban Camanachd beat second place Glenorchy 3-0 at Mossfield. It had been a difficult week for Oban Camanachd after the events of the previous weekend and indiscipline deprived them of the services of the suspended quartet; James MacMillan, Craig MacMillan, Alan MacGregor and Matt Rippon. Gary Lord remained out with a foot injury. Second place Glenorchy were level on points with Oban Camanachd ahead of the game although they had played a game more. However they were unable to topple a depleted Oban outfit as Andrew MacCuish put the home side ahead on 19 minutes with the only goal of the first half. Aidan MacIntyre made it 2-0 on 56 minutes and Andrew MacCuish got his second 10 minutes from time from the penalty spot. Oban Celtic 4 Taynuilt 3 A David Hill double helped Oban Celtic to a crucial 4-3 win over Taynuilt in Oban. Oban Celtic were bottom of the table ahead of the game with only three points from their seven league games. Taynuilt were a couple of points better off in third bottom position. Oban Celtic were without Gary McKerracher and Alan Duffy who were both suspended for a points accumulation. Michael MacQueen put Taynuilt ahead after 14 minutes but Oban Celtic levelled through Lee Askew just 60 seconds later. The visitors went in front for the second time through Stuart Scott but again Celtic squared the game through David Hill on the stroke of half time. David Hill got his second on 51 minutes and former Scotland and Oban Camanachd keeper Gavin Stobbart scored what proved to be the winner on his debut for Celtic, cancelling out Michael MacQueen’s second for Taynuilt which came on 67 minutes. The 4-3 win takes Oban Celtic off the bottom of the table. Aberdour 0 Strachur 4 The clash between Aberdour and Strachur in Fife meant that the bottom four sides in the table met last weekend. Strachur ran out 4-0 winners and they are now four points better off than their rivals but they have played two games more. Ally Mirlees, Rhys Campbell and a Brian Dickie brace counted for Strachur.
