Co-operative MacTavish Cup – Quarter Finals Fort William 1 Newtonmore 2 A Paul MacArthur goal 3 minutes from the end of extra time gave Newtonmore a 2-1 win in an incident-packed clash with Fort William at Craigard, Invergarry. This was the most intriguing of the last eight ties and the venue was switched from Fort William’s Black Parks pitch. Stevie Stewart and Daniel Stewart returned to add to Fort William manager Peter McIntyre’s options. Newtonmore’s Jamie Robinson made his first appearance of the season last week when he came on as a substitute in the win over Inveraray to further boost Norman MacArthur’s squad. After a scoreless first half, Newtonmore forward Glen MacKintosh was red-carded by referee Billy Wotherspoon. It is alleged that MacKintosh trod on the referee’s foot with the forward claiming that it was accidental. Despite being a man down, ‘More had a chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty but Paul MacKay saved Danny MacRae’s effort. However the big forward atoned soon after as he fired home just 15 minutes from time. The Fort played their one man advantage in defence until 10 minutes from time when manager McIntyre pushed Duncan Rodger into attack. Just when MacRae’s goal looked to have secured ‘More a semi-final spot, the tactical switch paid off as Fort’s Duncan Rodger struck with only 3 minutes remaining to take the tie to an extra half hour. There were chances for both sides in extra time and penalties just 3 minutes away, Paul MacArthur scored what proved to be the winning goal to seal a last four spot against Beauly or Glenurquhart. The tie was recorded for the Camanachd Association’s video gallery. Iain Borthwick and Paul Gow were also back but they started on the bench. Martin Dallas put the Kings ahead on 20 minutes but Kilmallie had their fair share of play during that period and they levelled through Ryan Stewart on 31 minutes to leave the sides level at the break. Kingussie missed some opportunities to extend their lead until Ronald Ross made it 3-1 just 12 minutes from time to put the holders through to the last four where they will face Lochaber. AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup - Quarter Finals Inveraray 1 Kyles Athletic 0 The match of the day in the AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup quarter finals was the clash between Inveraray and holders Kyles Athletic at the Winterton. Russell MacKinlay was back for the home side but Kyles were without defender Andrew King who started a two match ban. Kyles sit third top in the league compared to Inveraray who are third bottom so they were favourites. However a Euan MacMurdo goal on the hour mark was all that separated the sides as Inveraray continue to be a bogey team for the Tighnabruaich men. Bute 3 Oban Camanachd 1 A good tie was anticipated on Rothesay where Bute met Oban Camanachd. Bute were without the suspended pair; keeper Kevin Queen and James Craig who were sent off in the defeat to Kingussie last week. Oban Camanachd welcome Matt Rippon back from a one match ban for this 3pm throw up. A first half Malcolm Clark goal gave Oban Camanachd the advantage. However Bute talisman Hector Whitelaw was on target 11 minutes from time to take the tie into extra-time. Whitelaw struck twice more on 94 and 100 minutes to complete his hat-trick to take Bute through to a semi-final meeting with Inveraray. Kilmory 1 Aberdour 1 Kilmory have home advantage against Aberdour. Kilmory remained without Alex Cunningham and Ally Cunningham who were still banned. The visitors three match unbeaten run came to an end last weekend and both sides sit mid-table on four points which suggested this would always be a close one. A late Cameron MacCue goal took the tie between Kilmory and Aberdour into extra time. Hal Jones had put Kilmory ahead on 25 minutes but MacCue’s crucial strike took the game into an extra half hour period where there was no further scoring. Aberdour eventually ran out 2-1 winners on penalties. Taynuilt 3 Oban Celtic 2 Both Taynuilt and Oban Celtic are languishing at the wrong end of Marine Harvest South Division but they served up an exciting cup tie with the home side eventually running out 3-2 winners. However an Alan MacInnes strike 10 minutes before the break squared the tie. Stuart Scott scored a crucial double for Taynuilt on 51 and 69 minutes and although Gary McKerracher pulled a goal back a couple of minutes later, Taynuilt held on and they will meet Aberdour in the semi-finals. Orion Group Premiership Kinlochshiel 3 Lovat 4 Kinlochshiel and Lovat met for the second consecutive Saturday and it was Lovat who returned from Kirkton with both points following a 3-2 win. ’Shiel were without forward Fraser MacVicar because of work commitments and fellow attacker and club captain Gordie MacDonald remains on the injury list. Defender John Don MacKenzie was suspended following his red card in the side’s 3-3 draw at Balgate last week so Johnston Gill’s squad was stretched. To add to their woes, the influential Finlay MacRae started on the bench because of a hamstring problem picked up in training. There was a starting place in attack for youngster Jordan Fraser. Lovat’s Greg Matheson needed stitches in his head after the game last week but boss Allan MacRae was delighted that he was fit to play. Ryan Ferguson on 6 minutes and Greg Matheson just 60 seconds later gave Lovat and early lead and although Duncan “Ach” MacRae pulled a goal back on 39 minutes, Matheson got his second four minutes from the break. Greg Matheson went on to complete his hat-trick on 69 minutes to make it 4-1. ‘Shiel gambled on introducing Finlay MacRae but he was later withdrawn and the Kirkton men will hope that his hamstring problems were not aggravated further. Home keeper Graham Kennedy made some great saves during the second period to keep his side from going further behind. Late goals from Keith MacRae on 75 minutes and another from Duncan “Ach” MacRae a couple of minutes from time reduced the deficit to a single goal and made for an edgy finish for Lovat but they saw out the rest of the game to take both points and go second equal in the table.
