Artemis Macaulay Cup – Quarter Finals Oban Camanachd 2 Bute 0 The final Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter final tie took place at Mossfield where Oban Camanachd ran out 2-0 winners against Bute in their 3pm clash. The sides’ swapped divisions at the end of last season and Bute currently sit bottom of the Orion Group Premiership whilst Oban Camanachd top Marine Harvest South Division 1. Matt Rippon again missed out for Oban whilst Bute boss Barry Martin tried to lift his depleted squad who had suffered a heavy defeat to Kilmallie the previous weekend. Andrew MacCuish got a goal in each half as he struck on 17 minutes and 82 minutes. Oban Camanachd now face Inveraray in the semi-finals.
Sutherland Cup – Second Round Kilmallie 4 Ballachulish 2 The controversial Sutherland Cup tie between Kilmallie and Ballachulish was replayed at the Canal Parks where Kilmallie ran out 4-2 winners. The original tie was abandoned when supporters entered the field with the sides’ level at four goals each. Both teams were each given a reduced fine of £100 by the Camanachd Association following an appeal and they were also warned about their future conduct. Darren Sutherland put the visitors ahead after 18 minutes in this 1pm meeting but a Brian MacKay goal on 35 minutes levelled matters at the break. David MacPhee restored Ballachulish’s advantage on 56 minutes but Brian MacKay got his second 20 minutes from time. Late goals from Ross Manson on 85 minutes and Seb MacMillan just 3 minutes from time put Kilmallie though to next weekend’s quarter-finals where they face Kingussie at the Dell.
Bullough Cup – Quarter Finals Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Bute 2 The Glasgow Mid Argyll second team went down 2-1 to the Bute reserves at Yoker. Bute were 10-0 winners when the sides met at the Meadows in March but this was a much closer affair. All the goals came in the first half and Bute's Roddy Middleton got the opener when he fired home from a rebound after an Ally Carmichael shot had been saved. However this goal was cancelled out when Andy McGhee’s effort for the home side made it 1-1. Ally Carmichael scored what proved to be the winner just before half time with a good individual goal. Tayforth 1 Inveraray 3 Derek Robertson scored twice as Inveraray were 3-1 winners in their 2pm throw up at Tayforth. Ruairidh Finlayson got Inveraray’s other goal whilst Steven Wands got Tayforth’s solitary strike. Lochside Rovers W/O v Taynuilt Taynuilt were unable to raise a team for their trip to play Lochside Rovers so the Oban side goes through to the last four of the competition.
Orion Group Premiership Lovat 0 Kilmallie 1 Lovat missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table when they lost 1-0 to Kilmallie in their 1pm throw up at Balgate. These sides last met towards the end of last season when Lovat had to win to escape relegation. They did just that and how their fortunes have changed. Lovat’s Lorne MacKay missed out with a hernia problem. The Kilmallie attack were confident after their four forwards – John Stewart, Liam MacDonald, Grant MacKenzie and Michael Rodger – shared ten goals in the win over Bute in their previous outing. Greg Matheson returned for Lovat after missing the win over Newtonmore but both he, after 10 minutes, and Kilmallie’s Grant MacKenzie 5 minutes later, both missed first half penalties. Michael Rodger got the only goal of the game when his 64 minute strike deceived home keeper Stuart MacDonald and spun into the net. The win lifts Kilmallie out of the relegation zone at Glenurquhart’s expense. Kyles Athletic 4 Inveraray 1 Kyles Athletic capitalised on Lovat’s defeat to go top of the table following a 4-1 derby win over Inveraray at Tighnabruaich. The win was due in no small way to the Whyte clan as Gordon Whyte opened the scoring on 2 minutes and Thomas Whyte made it 2-0 on 28 minutes to give the home side a 2-0 lead at the break. Inveraray’s Euan McMurdo pulled a goal back 5 minutes into the second half but John Whyte restored Kyles’ two goal advantage when he struck on 58 minutes to make it 3-1. Referee David Mitchell awarded Kyles a penalty on 72 minutes and Robbie MacLeod duly obliged to make it 4-1. Glenurquhart 1 Fort William 3 Glenurquhart and Fort William won through to the North semi-final of the Artemis Macaulay Cup the previous weekend but first there were league points up for grabs as the sides met at Blairbeg on league duty. The Glen suffered a blow ahead of the 1pm throw up when Lewis MacLennan picked up an injury in the warm-up. Fort William’s Liam MacIntyre was free from suspension but Arran MacPhee was still injured with a broken wrist. However Neil Robertson was available before serving a one match ban this coming weekend for a points accumulation. Glenurquhart enjoyed all the early pressure but were unable to find a way past Fort keeper Paul MacKay. A rare Fort attack saw Ryan Campbell open the on 19 minutes and when the same player added a second on the half hour mark, Glenurquhart may well have felt that it just wasn’t going to be their day. Fort William defender Mark Grant was sent off by referee Colin MacDonald following a second yellow card early in the second half. However Glenurquhart were unable to make their one man advantage count and Gary Innes made it 3-0 just 10 minutes from time. James MacPherson scored for the third time in three games with a great strike on 88 minutes to make it 3-1 but the visitors took the points.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Caberfeidh 1 Lochcarron 2 The meeting between Caberfeidh and Lochcarron at Castle Leod was brought forward to Wednesday 13 June 2012. Caberfeidh missed out on the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table when they went down 2-1. The visitors went ahead on 19 minutes when Gregor Cushnie collected a cross from the right and shot into the corner of the net. Cabers had the chance to level on 28 minutes when Martin MacDonald was tripped inside the D and referee Innes Wood pointed to the penalty spot. However Kevin Bartlett blazed his spot hit past Kenny Ross’ left post. Caberfeidh continued to press for the remainder of the half but they were hit with a sucker-punch 4 minutes from the interval when a Lochcarron break-away ended when Iain MacKenzie slotted the ball past Donald Mellis to make it 2-0. The pattern of play remained the same in the second half with Caberfeidh enjoying the bulk of the pressure but Kenny Ross in the visiting goal was up to the task as he made a great stop from a Martin MacDonald pile-driver and further saves from Bartlett and MacDonald with his feet. However the home side finally hit the target on 69 minutes when Stuart Kryzanowski collected the ball at the back post and went round the Lochcarron defence before firing low into the net to make it 2-1. Caberfeidh’s Aaron Ross had the home crowd gasping when he shot inches wide on 90 minutes. Liam Mutch and Aaron Matheson were correctly booked by referee Wood for a flare-up at the start of stoppage time. Caberfeidh continued to press and there was a massive scramble in the Lochcarron goal-mouth after 95 minutes when a Kevin Bartlett ball into the D saw Kenny Ross save the resultant shot before he cleared the ball for a corner. The corner from the right saw Martin MacDonald fire goalwards but Kenny Ross made a brilliant save with his right hand. The win means Lochcarron leap-frog Beauly ahead of their home meeting with Strathglass. Beauly 2 Strathglass 1 Beauly ended a run of four straight league defeats, stretching back to the end of March, when they beat Strathglass 2-1 in their 1pm throw up at Braeview Park. Beauly announced this week that defender Innes Simpson would be leaving the club and there is already interest from elsewhere in obtaining his signature. Fulton Ross put the home side ahead on 10 minutes only for Stuart Scott to make it 1-1 just 7 minutes later. However Fulton Ross added his second on 28 minutes to give GMA the advantage at the break. Mid Argyll stamped their authority on the game in the second half. Fulton Ross completed his hat-trick on 55 minutes to make it 3-1. Andy Mathie grabbed a brace on 66 and 78 minutes to make it 5-1 and Fulton Ross’ fourth goal of the afternoon 10 minutes from time rounded off a 6-1 victory. Katy Smith was also on target for Aberdour on 85 minutes. This 6-1 victory was Aberdour’s second league win of the season but they remain bottom of the table.
