27 May 2012 The three remaining Balliemore Cup quarter final ties and shinty’s first Orion Group Premiership Derby Day took place on Saturday 26 May 2012.
Balliemore Cup – Quarter Finals Oban Camanachd 2 Lochaber 3 The tie of the round was the meeting between Oban Camanachd and Lochaber at Mossfield and it took two hours to separate the sides. Stuart Callison put Lochaber ahead but an Iain MacMillan double saw the advantage swing Oban Camanachd’s way. Shaun Nicolson scored to take the tie into extra-time where Stuart Callison, just as he did against Kingussie the previous week, got the crucial goal when he made it 3-2. Oban Camanachd’s cause wasn’t helped when they had Matt Rippon red carded for the second time this season. Skye Camanachd 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Second half strikes from Euan Forsyth and Craig Anderson overturned Neil MacVicar’s first half opener as Glasgow Mid Argyll reached the semi-finals with a 2-1 win over Skye Camanachd at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Beauly 6 Inverness 1 A Marc MacLauchlin hat-trick and a Jack MacDonald brace helped Beauly to a 6-1 win over Inverness at Braeview Park.
Orion Group Premiership – Derby Day Kingussie 2 Newtonmore 2 The first Badenoch derby of the season took place at the Dell as Kingussie hosted near-neighbours Newtonmore in front of a live TV audience. Kingussie drew first blood through Ronald Ross after 16 minutes. John MacKenzie, who had replaced the injured Fraser MacKintosh, equalised for ‘More on 34 minutes but Ronald Ross got his second a couple of minutes later to put the Kings back in front after Michael Ritchie had left his goal to try and foil a Kings attack. Kingussie suffered a blow when Lee Bain was red carded by referee Deek Cameron following a clash with Ackie MacRae. Calum Stewart, who scored twice for the ‘Newtonmore reserves in their derby win the previous night, earned Newtonmore the point with a goal 11 minutes from time which keeps them at the top of the table on goal difference. Lovat 5 Glenurquhart 1 Local rivalries were renewed at Balgate where Lovat played Glenurquhart and the home side took the bragging rights with a 5-1 win. Greg Matheson grabbed a hat-trick including a second half penalty. Kilmallie 1 Fort William 3 A first half Daniel Stewart goal and a second half brace from Ryan Campbell gave Fort William a 3-1 win over Kilmallie at the Canal Parks. Martin Stewart replied for Kilmallie 4 minutes from time. Bute 0 Kyles Athletic 1 Roddy MacDonald’s goal on the stroke of half time was all that separated Bute and Kyles Athletic at the Meadows but it was enough to take the points back to Tighnabruaich. Kyles go level on points with Newtonmore at the top of the table. Inveraray 7 Kinlochshiel 1 The one exception to the top division derby programme was the meeting between Inveraray and Kinlochshiel at the Winterton. Finlay MacRae put ‘Shiel ahead after 8 minutes but they had no answer for rampant Inveraray who went on to net seven times with Russell MacKinlay and Euan MacMurdo getting doubles and Garry MacPherson Ruairidh Graham and Andrew MacMurdo getting the others.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Lochcarron 1 Caberfeidh 5 Kevin Bartlett continued his good scoring run with a hat-trick as Caberfeidh beat Lochcarron 5-1 at Battery Park.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Glenorchy 3 Oban Celtic 0 Glenorchy beat Oban Celtic 3-0 at Dalmally. Duncan Smith got the opener in the opening minute and Lorne Brown made it 2-0 just before the half time whistle. Kieran MacKay added a third 15 minutes from time and the win takes Glenorchy level on points at the top of the table with Oban Camanachd and Glasgow Mid Argyll. Strachur 2 Taynuilt 2 Strachur and Taynuilt shared the points following a 2-2 draw on the banks of Loch Fyne. Angus Campbell and Alistair Mirlees counted for the home side whilst Michael MacQueen and Stuart Scott were on target for Taynuilt. Kilmory 4 Aberdour 1 Alex Cunningham scored twice as Kilmory had a 4-1 win over Aberdour.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Newtonmore 7 Kingussie 2 Newtonmore beat Kingussie 7-2 in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 derby clash at the Eilan on Friday 25 May 2012. Evan Menzies, Calum Stewart and Ross Aitken each scored doubles for the home side whilst Owen Fraser got the other. Michael Clark scored twice for Kingussie with the first and last goals of the match. Fort William 2 Skye Camanachd 1 Fort William beat Skye Camanachd 2-1 at the Black Parks. Scott Knox put the Fort ahead but Will Cowie levelled before he had to go off to have stitches inserted to a shin gash. Alan Knox scored what proved to be the winner for Fort William who also hit the frame of the Skye goal four times. Kinlochshiel 1 Glengarry 0 A Scott MacLean goal 9 minutes from time lifted Kinlochshiel from fourth to second place as they beat Glengarry 1-0 at Kirkton. Glenurquhart 4 Lovat 1 The Glenurquhart reserve side came out on top against Lovat in their derby meeting at Blairbeg. Ben Hosie helped himself to a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Kyles Athletic 9 Lochside Rovers 4 League Leaders Lochside Rovers went down to their first defeat of the season at Tighnabruaich against Kyles Athletic. Roddy MacColl scored four times for fourth place Kyles. Aberdour 1 Tayforth 3 Tayforth stay second in the table as they beat Aberdour 3-1 in Fife. Tayforth were 2-0 home winners when the sides met at the beginning of March and goals from Jamie MacDonald, Magnus Bjorland and Stuart Ferrier gave them a second victory over Aberdour. Cameron MacCue got Aberdour’s strike. Ballachulish 2 Ardnamurchan 1 Ardnamurchan went down 2-1 to Ballachulish at Taynuilt. Stuart Robertson and Allan Clark scored for Ballachulish whilst John Nudds replied for Ardnamurchan. Inveraray 15 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Inveraray ran riot against a depleted Glasgow Mid Argyll side, winning 15-0 at the Winterton. Neil Campbell was the day’s top scorer with five goals. Bute 3 Col Glen 3 Bute and Col Glen shared the points in a 3-3 draw at the Meadows. Roddy Middleton, Tom MacMillan and Rhuaridh Sloane were on target for Bute and a Cairn Limbert double and Norman MacDonald earned the visitors a point.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Lewis Camanachd 2 Beauly 6 Lewis Camanachd put up a good fight before going down 6-2 to league leaders Beauly in Shawbost. Scott MacLean contributed with a hat-trick for the visitors. Lochbroom 5 Boleskine 1 Lochbroom go second with a 5-1 win over Boleskine in Ullapool. Dickie MacKenzie bagged a hat-trick and Lorne Hughes scored twice. Lewis Smith got Boleskine’s solitary strike. Kilmallie 10 Inverness 0 Kilmallie hit double figures against Inverness in their noon clash at the Canal Parks. Grant MacKenzie scored three and Seb MacMillan and Brain MacKay each scored twice. Caberfeidh 2 Strathspey Camanachd 3 Strathspey Camanachd made it two wins in a row when they beat Caberfeidh 3-2 at Castle Leod. Peter Tinney and an Andy Hay double put Strathspey 3-0 ahead at the break. Scott MacLean and Colin MacLennan pulled back second half goals for the home side but shinty’s newest team held on to take the points. The win lifts Strathspey off the foot of the table at the expense of Lewis Camanachd and second bottom Inverness. Strathglass 4 Lochcarron 0 Ciaran Melons scored twice as Strathglass beat Lochcarron 4-0 at Cannich. Josh Fraser and Sal Redpath got the others. |
