09 September 2012 Newtonmore have one hand firmly gripped on the Orion Group Premiership trophy following their win over Glenurquhart on Saturday 8 September 2012.
Orion Group Premiership Newtonmore 1 Glenurquhart 0 Newtonmore played their game in hand over Kyles Athletic when they faced an on-form Glenurquhart side at the Eilan in a 12.30pm throw up. The final outcome was shaped by incidents at the start of each half. The Glen thought they had taken an early lead through Neale Reid but they suffered disappointment as the goal judge ruled that Reid’s effort had not crossed the line. The decisive goal came 5 minutes into the second half when Evan Menzies beat Glen keeper Stuart MacKintosh to score the only goal of the game. Both Newtonmore and Kyles Athletic have one match remaining and the men from the Eilan have a two point lead and a plus thirteen goal difference advantage over their rivals. It would therefore take Kyles to beat Inveraray by a number of goals and Newtonmore to suffer a total collapse against Glenurquhart at Blairbeg to prevent Norman MacArthur’s side winning their third consecutive title. Bute 2 Kinlochshiel 2 Bute came from two goals down to earn a point against Kinlochshiel at The Meadows in what was the final match of the season for both sides. A goal in each half from Keith MacRae put ‘Shiel 2-0 ahead after an hour. However Roberto Zavaroni pulled a goal back on 62 minutes and when referee Billy Wotherspoon awarded the home side a penalty 11 minutes from time for a kick in the ‘Shiel D, Hector Whitelaw stepped forward to beat Scott Kennedy from the spot to make it 2-2.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Caberfeidh 3 Lochaber 6 Lochaber go top of the table when they came from 3-0 down to beat Caberfeidh 6-3 at Castle Leod. However four goals in a 9 minute spell at the end of the half gave Lochaber a 4-3 lead at the interval. The visitors added two more goals in the second half to seal what could prove to be a crucial win. Shaun Nicolson got four of the Lochaber goals with Ben Delaney and Scott Patterson getting the others. Lochaber are now a point clear of second place Skye with two games in hand. They play one of these games in hand against Beauly at Braeview Park on Sunday 16 September 2012. This means that they could clinch the title against Skye Camanachd at Spean Bridge on Saturday 22 September 2012. Beauly 2 Skye Camanachd 1 Skye Camanachd’s title chances faltered when they lost 2-1 to Beauly at Braeview Park. Marc MacLauchlan and Jack MacDonald put Beauly 2-0 ahead after just 20 minutes. Marine Harvest North Division 3 Beauly 3 Boleskine 3 Marine Harvest North Division 3 league champions Beauly and second place Boleskine served up an entertaining 3-3 draw in their noon throw up at Braeview Park. Craig Pirrie put the visitors ahead on 14 minutes when he collected a Michael Pirrie free-hit and turned and shot low into the net. A 25 yard back-hand Sean Stewart drive levelled the game 5 minutes later. However Gavin Butterworth got on the end of a sweeping move down the Boleskine right to restore the visitors’ advantage. Beauly started the second half strongly and it took a couple of fine saves from Boleskine keeper Ewan Wotherspoon to deny Sean Stewart and Martin Davidson. Boleskine full back Graham Black was sent off by referee Robert Morrison on 72 minutes following yellow cards for challenges on Martin Davidson and Sean Stewart. Beauly went for the equaliser and Wotherspoon saved well from Conor Ross. However they were hit with a sucker-punch 5 minutes from time when Ewen Fraser wriggled through the Beauly defence to make it 3-1 following a free-hit on the left. Beauly pulled a goal back from the throw up following a turn and shot from Martin Davidson.
