Strathglass 3 Skye Camanachd 5 | |
01 July 2012 The Skye Camanachd first team went top of Marine Harvest North Division 1 with a 5-3 win over Strathglass at Cannich on Saturday 30 June 2012. Skye manager Willie MacRae named a 16 man squad for the game and he made three changes from the squad which beat Lochcarron last weekend. Brothers Steven Morrison and Danny Morrison were unavailable but David Grant, Stewart Grant and Will Cowie were all added to the squad and they made a late dash to Cannich after playing for the second team at Balgate in the early throw up. Keeper Iain Munro also made the same journey as keepers John MacLeod and Aonghas MacDonald were unavailable. Skye made a bright start and Iain Nicolson held the ball up from a free-hit before setting up Jordan Murchison but his volley struck the side-netting. Strathglass took the lead with their first attack of the game. A long ball forward went over Skye full back Neil MacVicar and found home player / manager Robert Geddes lurking behind and he smashed an unstoppable half-volley into the roof of the net to put the home side 1-0 in front. Skye levelled when Ally MacDonald ran inside to meet a ball across the D and he cracked a terrific first time shot past Stevie MacLauchlan to make it 1-1. Skye took the lead just 6 minutes later when a neat finish from Iain Nicolson beat MacLauchlan to make it 2-1. Skye extended their advantage on the stroke of half time when Ally MacDonald fired home for his second goal of the game. Iain Nicolson also got his second strike of the afternoon when he blasted the ball high into the net to make it 4-1. Skye lost full back Neil MacVicar with a foot injury. Iain Morrison came on at wing centre with Shaun Hedley dropping into defence and Shockie MacLennan going to full back. Strathglass reduced the deficit when substitute Les Fraser, who had come on for Ally Rothe, hit a low shot from around the penalty spot which bounced up, high into the net to make it 4-2. Skye restored their three goal advantage when Jordan Murchison made space for himself and shot home to make it 5-2. Skye introduced Will Cowie in place of Iain Murray which gave the 15 year his first competitive appearance for the Islanders. The youngster almost marked his competitive debut with a goal when he played a one-two with Ally MacDonald before sending drive which was heading for the top right corner of Stevie MacLauchlan’s net before the keeper made a fantastic save to turn the ball away. Skye’s Iain Morrison was hit in the face with the ball and he was replaced by Stewart Grant. Morrison later required a stay in Raigmore Hospital and an operation to insert plates for what was later diagnosed as a fractured jaw. With a couple of minutes remaining, Strathglass reduced the deficit when the unmarked Robbie Stokes collected a short pass from Robert Geddes and tucked the ball into the back of the net. Skye’s Allan MacKinnon was yellow carded for a hand ball and Darren Reid from Strathglass was booked for having too much to say to referee John Matheson. Best for Skye were two goal Ally MacDonald and Chris Rose whose distribution from midfield was very good.
