Skye Camanachd U17 3 Glenurquhart U17 2 | |
25 May 2012 Skye Camanachd U17 beat Glenurquhart U17 3-2 in their London Shield meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Tuesday 22 May 2012. Skye took the lead on 4 minutes with a fantastic strike from Will Cowie. The Skye captain received a pass and made space for himself before crashing a marvellous 25 yard drive across Glen keeper Calum MacPhail into the top corner of the net. Skye keeper Raymond Gillies was called into action on 6 minutes when he saved a 20 yard Ewan Brady effort. The home side went 2-0 up on 16 minutes. Will Cowie collected a clearance from the Glen defence and beat Calum MacPhail at his right post to make it 2-0. Skye full forward Calum MacInnes fired over the bar after 23 minutes. The final chance of the half fell to Skye's Andrew Grant on 32 minutes but his shot was deflected wide for a corner by Glen full back Euan Lloyd. Skye went 3-0 in front 4 minutes into the second half. Andrew Grant collected the ball wide on the right. He dribbled towards the D before firing in off the inside of the post. Skye looked in control but Glenurquhart got back in the match 3 minutes later. Jack Hosie collected the ball and turned his marker before closing in on the Skye goal and thumping the ball into the net. Skye full back Iain MacLeod picked up a head injury trying to prevent the goal and he had to leave the field for treatment. A combination of the goal and the loss of MacLeod seemed to unsettle Skye and Glenurquhart pulled another goal back 14 minutes into the second half. Again it was Jack Hosie who did the damage as the Skye defence left him unmarked and he needed no invitation to shoot home to make it 3-2. Skye responded 22 minutes into the second half. Andrew Grant saw his shot saved by Calum MacPhail and Angie Grant was just unable to get on the rebound. Iain MacLeod was able to return to the field for the closing stages of the game and this steadied the Skye defence. They young Islanders had three chances to extend their lead as the clock ticked down. Just 3 minutes from time, a low shot from Angie MacPherson was saved by keeper MacPhail. A minute later Angie MacPherson dispossessed Euan Lloyd before shooting wide of target. Angie MacPherson then set up Ally MacCrimmon a minute from time but he shot past the post. There were some good performances on both sides. Skye were best served by Iain MacLeod, who was excellent at full back. Stephen Murchison was also impressive, especially as he was playing with an injury, and Will Cowie scored two great goals and although he wasn't on the ball as much as usual in the second half, he did a tremendous amount of running to close down the Glen midfield. Full back Euan Lloyd, Ewan Brady, who gives great delivery with shys from both sides of the park and the ever-quick Jack Hosie up front all impressed for the Glen.
