Skye Camanachd and Michael Breathnach reached the final of Iomain Cholmcille a Coig following the shinty and hurling semi-finals at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 7 April 2012.
Skye Camanachd beat Alba 5-1 in the shinty semi-final. Two fantastic strikes in a couple of minutes from Skye captain Iain Nicolson put Skye 2-0 ahead. The goals came on 16 and 17 minutes and Skye carried this lead into the break. Alba came more into the game in the second half and Aonghas MacDonald made a good save with his hand from Ardnamurchan’s David Wright. However it was Skye who increased their lead when Conor MacDonald saved an Ian MacPherson shot with his feet and David Grant rammed the rebound into the net. Alba pulled a goal back when Lochbroom’s Seumas Nairn stretched to take down a high ball and he turned and sent a 20 yard shot goalwards. Skye keeper Aonghas MacDonald got to the ball but he couldn’t stop it crossing the line. Skye lost wing centre Stewart Grant with what was later confirmed as a broken finger. Skye restored their three goal advantage when an Ian MacPherson effort was cleared but John MacKenzie collected the ball and lofted a 25 yard shot high into the net. John MacKenzie got his second with another shot from distance to round off a fine 5-1 win.
Michael Breathnach edged out Fir Ulah in the in the hurling semi-final with a (1-7) 10-4 (0-4) victory in fron of an enthusiastic crowd. This was believed to be the first full hurling match to be played in the Highlands and it certainly captured the imagination.
Alba and Fir Ulah contested third place and the Scots came out on top after an entertaining clash. Alba were the better side in the first half although Fir Ulah came back strongly in the second period.
