Skye Camanachd 5 Caberfeidh 2 | |
07 May 2012 Skye Camanachd beat Caberfeidh 5-2 in their Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup first round tie at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 5 May 2012. Skye Camanachd manager Willie MacRae was forced to make two changes to the squad which beat Lochcarron last weekend as Iain Nicolson was unavailable and Shaun Hedley was unwell. Chris Rose and Iain MacLellan were promoted from the second team. The game has come too early for Gilleasbuig MacDonald who remained on the sideline with a hand injury. MacRae also made some positional changes with Jamie MacDonald only fit enough to take a place on the bench. Allan MacKinnon started at buckshee back and there was a first start in the senior team for Chris Rose at full centre. Regular buckshee back Neil MacVicar was suffering from a bruised foot so he started at full forward. Caberfeidh manager Stewart MacLennan was also without several regulars as keeper Donald Mellis, Brian MacDonald, Graham MacGregor, Paul Ross and Gavin MacDonald all failed to travel. Veteran Archie Ritchie started in goal. A great run down the Skye right on 8 minutes took Kevin Bartlett inside the Skye D but Aonghas MacDonald came off his line to block the ball with his feet before Steven Morrison cleared the danger. Skye took the lead on 10 minutes. Allan MacLeod won the ball in defence and played it forward to Danny Morrison who had drifted into midfield. Morrison flicked the ball into the air before hitting it first time to Neil MacVicar on the Skye right. MacVicar beat Lee Nicol before firing low from the edge of the D across keeper Archie Ritchie into the bottom corner of the net to put Skye 1-0 in front. Kevin Bartlett tried to break up the Skye right again on 10 minutes but Steven Morrison came out to halt his run before clearing the ball. Ally MacDonald played a wicked ball across goal from the Skye left on 12 minutes but there were no takers in front of goal. Danny Morrison received a head knock on 15 minutes after going for an aerial ball with Liam Mutch and he had to leave the field to be bandaged up by Skye medic Dr Wilson Banks. Iain Murray came on his place until Morrison was able to return. Skye enjoyed a lot of pressure without extending their lead and they were made to pay on 24 minutes when Ally MacLennan won the ball in the middle of the park and lofted a huge clearance forward. Skye keeper Aonghas MacDonald looked to be ushering the ball past his right post but it took a horrible bounce before creeping into the corner of the net. The goal seemed to deflate Skye and Steven Morrison had to make a goal-saving challenge on Stuart Kryzanowski on 33 minutes. Archie Ritchie did well to deny Jordan Murchison a couple of minutes later and he cleared the ball before Neil MacVicar could reach the rebound. Visiting goalie Archie Ritchie made another great save from a Jordan Murchison shot on 44 minutes and Danny Morrison couldn’t get on the rebound. Seconds later a Neil MacVicar pile-driver hit keeper Ritchie on the face and the keeper was alert enough to clear his lines. Cabers boss Stewart MacLennan reshuffled his pack at the start of the second half. Craig Morrison came on in place of Aaron Ross and Ally MacLennan went to buck-shee forward with Kevin Bartlett taking up the full centre role. Cabers attacked from the throw up and Martin MacDonald broke free and was about to shoot from the edge of the D when he was challenged by Shockie MacLennan and Allan MacLeod. MacDonald tumbled to the ground and with Cabers claiming a penalty, the ball broke to Craig Morrison but Aonghas MacDonald saved well with his chest and deflected the ball for a corner. The corner broke to Iain MacColl but MacDonald in the Skye goal made another good stop to deny the visitors. Caberfeidh continued to press and they took the lead after 47 minutes. Substitute Craig Morrison won the ball on the left and released Stewart Kryzanowski and with the Skye defence holding a high line, he turned his marker which left him a clean run in on goal. Kryzanowski took a couple of touches as he dribbled forward and he kept his cool before lofting the ball over Aonghas MacDonald’s shoulder to put his side 2-1 ahead. Danny Morrison got on the end of a Steven Morrison free-hit on 52 minutes and he cut the ball inside to Neil MacVicar. The Skye full forward fired low on goal and keeper Ritchie stopped his effort with his feet and as the ball spun up in the air, he palmed it away for a corner. Skye pressured the Cabers goal from the corner and a Jordan Murchison shot was deflected for another corner by Liam Mutch. This time Darryl Macintosh’s corner caused panic in the visiting defence and as keeper Ritchie tried to clear, Jordan Murchison got the crucial touch on the ball to put it low into the net and square the game at two each with 53 minutes played. A Steven Morrison goal-hit found Neil MacVicar but the Cabers defence won possession as MacVicar tried to find Jordan Murchison. However Lee Nicol’s clearance was brought down by Neil MacVicar and he crashed a great 30 yard shot, low into the Cabers net to put Skye 3-2 in front with 57 minutes played. Skye extended their lead just 60 seconds later when a Darryl Macintosh pass found the unmarked Danny Morrison. Jordan Murchison made a run to the left which allowed Morrison the space to crash a great shot into the roof to the net to put Skye 4-2 in front. A combination of Steven Morrison and Aonghas MacDonald denied Cabers on 65 minutes and the same players combined to clear the resultant corner at the expense of another corner. Kevin Bartlett shot wide from the second corner. Archie Ritchie ran from his line to try and halt a Skye attack but he lost possession and Cabers defender Ruairidh MacLennan had to stop a goal-bound Jordan Murchison effort on the goal-line on 73 minutes. A Neil MacVicar shot flashed across goal on 75 minutes as the Skye forward went on the hunt for his hat-trick. Archie Ritchie did well to deal with a Darryl Macintosh effort from distance a minute later. Skye secured their place in the next round on 79 minutes when Neil MacVicar raced out to the right wing to gain possession. He set the ball across goal to Danny Morrison on the left and although his shot was chested away by Archie Ritchie but Jordan Murchison thumped the rebound into the net to make it 5-2. With 10 minutes remaining, Skye manager Willie MacRae introduced Iain Murray and Iain MacLellan in place of Danny Morrison and Ally MacDonald. Neil MacVicar shot over the bar a minute later. Iain Murray collected an Iain Morrison pass on 86 minutes and he flicked the ball up before sending a terrific looping shot just over the bar for the final attempt of the game. Ally MacLennan and Kevin Bartlett were always a threat for Caberfeidh whilst Archie Ritchie made several good saves in goal. Best for Skye were the goal scorers whilst the centre line of Darryl Macintosh, Chris Rose and Iain Morrison ensured the Islanders forwards had plenty possession.
