Skye Camanachd 4 Aberdeen University 3 | |
01 August 2012 The Skye Camanachd second team came from 3-2 down to beat Aberdeen University 4-3 in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 28 July 2012. Skye manager Murdo Morrison was working so Donnie Martin looked after the side. Skye made four changes from the side which beat Glenurquhart the previous week. Jamie Gannon replaced Ian Munro in goal. This was Gannon’s first appearance for the Islanders for almost 18 months as he battled against a knee injury. Munro was off to work at the Olympics. Chris Rose and Ally MacDonald returned to first team duty. As well as Gannon, Iain MacLeod, John Angus MacInnes and David MacInnes came into the squad. Aberdeen University included three familiar faces in their ranks as former Skye Camanachd players Kieron Roberts, Kenny MacLeod and Jamie Beaton featured in their starting line-up. The Students started brightly and Callum Edmunds shot just wide from the edge of the D in the opening moments of the game. Indeed Aberdeen took the lead after just two minutes when a great Kenny Oxton shy from the right fell at the edge of the D to Callum Edmunds and he swept the ball into the net to give his side an early lead. Skye suffered a setback a couple of minutes later when defender Jack Latton received a blow to the hand and he had to leave the pitch to be replaced by David Grant. It was later confirmed that Latton had suffered a broken hand. Andrew Banks moved to replace Latton at wing back whilst Grant came on at full back. Jamie Beaton flashed a shot across the face of goal on 8 minutes as the visitors threatened to increase their lead. Jamie Gannon made a great save with his hand following a superb turn and shot from Jamie Beaton on 14 minutes. The visitors continued to have most of the early pressure but it was Skye who got an unlikely equaliser equalised on 19 minutes when Aberdeen keeper Terry Stebbings saved an Alan Palmer shot but Jordan Murchison reacted first to force the rebound into the net to make it 1-1. Skye were awarded a penalty by referee Billy Wotherspoon on the half hour mark when Alan Palmer was hauled down in the D. Palmer picked himself up to take the spot-hit but Terry Stebbings stopped the ball with his feet and cleared the danger. Skye went in front on 38 minutes when Alan Palmer released Will Cowie. His cross found Jordan Murchison who calmly slotted the ball into the net for his second goal of the game. The first half ended with the Islanders 2-1 in front. Kenny MacLeod threatened a couple of times for the Students and the start of the second half and he made it 2-2 after 51 minutes. MacLeod collected a pass from Jamie Beaton. His first attempt was blocked by Allan MacLeod but then he fired a 25 yard effort into the roof of the net at the second attempt. Aberdeen University took the lead on 59 minutes when Kenny MacLeod collected a Willie Hunter corner on the left and he blasted the ball past Jamie Gannon to put his side 3-2 in front. Both teams had chances before Skye made it 3-3 on 73 minutes. Palmer fed Will Cowie. His shot took a deflection into the patch of Jordan Murchison and he made space for himself before firing the ball, on his back-hand, across the keeper into the net to complete his hat-trick. The winning goal came on 79 minutes and it came for the home side. Stewart Grant found Jordan Murchison who shot at goal. Stebbings palmed away his effort but Will Cowie pushed the rebound goalwards and Alan Palmer forced the ball over the line to make it 4-3. This was far from Skye’s best performance of the season but they deserve credit for sticking with the task in hand and taking the points whilst the Granite City side will feel hard done by to return home empty-handed.
