Newtonmore 4 Skye Camanachd 1 - UPDATED! | |
09 June 2012 League leaders Newtonmore beat Skye Camanachd 4-1 in their Marine Harvest North Division 2 meeting at the Eilan on Saturday 2 June 2012. Neil Stewart is a long term absentee for Newtonmore co-managers Cammy MacDonald and Glen Tonkin with a knee injury. 2011 senior Newtonmore Campbell Scott Campbell started on the bench. Skye manager Murdo Morrison named a 15 man squad for the game and he made five changes to the 16 man squad which beat Glengarry the previous weekend. Assistant managers John MacLeod and David Grant were on first team duty. Jack Latton had a dislocated shoulder and U17 players Iain MacLeod, and DJ Gilpin dropped out of the squad. There were call ups for Iain Munro, who played for the first team the previous Saturday, Iain Nicolson, whose work commitments mean that he could not travel to Skye to play for the first team, John Angus MacInnes and U14 captain Stephen Murchison. Skye were not at their best in the first half and they quickly went 3-0 behind thanks to an Evan Menzies hat-trick as the league’s stop scorer netted with strikes on 11, 21 and 26 minutes. Two of Menzies’ goals were impressive volleys from an on-form striker. When Mark MacDonald made it 4-0 a couple of minutes before the break, the game looked over as a contest. Newtonmore’s Scott Chisholm was red carded before the interval for a show of dissent to referee Euan Pearson. This prompted ‘More to introduce Scott Campbell into the action. Skye pulled a goal back 5 minutes into the second half when Sean MacQuarrie saved a Will Cowie drive and Iain MacLellan tucked the rebound into the net to make it 4-1. However Skye were not able to reduce the deficit further, although Andrew Grant went close, and the home side ran out deserved winners. Skye lost Ally “Spod” MacLeod with a hand injury but there turned out to be no broken bones.
