Malcolm MacLean, Glen Bernisdale & Glasgow | |
29 August 2012 Everyone at Skye Camanachd was saddened to hear of the passing of Malcolm MacLean. Malcolm MacLean, or "Cally Laban" as he was known, came from Glen Bernisdale before moving to Glasgow. He was a member of the famous Skye Camanachd team which won the 1950 Sutherland Cup when they beat Newtonmore 5-4 in Beauly on 1 April 1950 to lift the junior trophy for the first time. He played in the team along-side his brother Alasdair and current Skye Camanachd President Billy MacKinnon. Like many Skye men of his age, Malcolm moved to Glasgow a year later to pursue his career but shinty continued to be an important part of his life and he went on to play for both Glasgow Skye and Glasgow Inverness. He was present at An Aird, Fort William on 2 June 1990 to watch his son Andy MacLean play wing centre as Skye Camanachd beat Newtonmore 4-1 to win the Camanachd Cup. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Andy and the rest of the family. Malcolm MacLean's funeral service will be in the Beauly Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, Balblair on Thursday 30 August 2012 at 12 noon and thereafter to Wardlaw Cemetery, Kirkhill. |
