Camanachd Leòdhais bade farewell to a highly successful 2011 with their traditional Iomain Challainn match on Hogmanay at Bayhead Park, Stornoway.
In a nod to the old New Year tradition of the Stornoway Athletic Shinty Club, the game was held between the Captain’s and Vice-Captain’s selects, with Scott Murray and Daniel “Gaga” Gallagher doing the honours before they hand over to former Skye Camanachd player Stuart “Tyson” Campbell and Donald Lamont for the 2012 season.
It was Vice-Captain Gallagher’s side which edged a close game which had many goal mouth scrambles.
Following the 4-3 win, young Ryan McCafferty from Ness was presented with the man of the match award thanks to his brace of goals for the victorious side.
Despite inclement weather and several senior players being off the island or working, there was a great turnout of players and supporters to keep this old Gaelic tradition going strong.
Skye Camanachd will be visiting Lewis as part of their pre-season preparations at the end of January 2012.
