26 August 2012 Kingussie won the 2012 Newtonmore Veterans Sixes at the Eilan on Sunday 26 August 2012. A total of eight teams and a large crowd gathered for the competition which was aimed at over 45 year-olds. Newtonmore and Lovat qualified for the semi-finals from one group at the expense of Kilmallie and Kingussie B. Kingussie A and Fort William made it through from the other group which also included Lochaber and Beauly. Kingussie beat Lovat 2-1 in their semi-final. Newtonmore beat Fort William 1-0 in the second semi-final in a tie which saw referee John Henderson red card Newtonmore’s David Balharry and Iain “Smaxi” Smith from Fort William This set up an all-Badenoch final which was refereed by John Sloggie. Sandy Sellar put ‘More ahead but Davie Anderson made it 1-1. Kingussie first team manager Russell Jones put his side ahead and Davie Anderson went on to score two more to compete his hat-trick and seal a 4-1 victory. Davie Anderson was also named Player of the Tournament. There were a few amusing incidents throughout the day including John Sloggie picking up fellow referee Deek Cameron (Fort William) for a foul shy. Also, Newtonmore first team manager Norman MacArthur played a game in goals wearing a Kingussie strip after coming second in a weight loss bet with Kingussie’s Dallas Young.
