Double South Success in 2012 University Clashes | |
11 November 2012 The South came out on top in both the men’s’ and women’s’ university shinty clashes at St Andrews on Saturday 10 November 2012. The ladies were first up and the South team, co-captained by Glasgow Mid Argyll’s Alana Harrison and Kirsty Deans from Badenoch Strathspey, ran out convincing 4-0 winners in their 11am throw up. Elaine Tully scored twice and Lochaber’s Missy Cameron and Aberdour’s Niamh Donnelly got the others. The North captains were Alannah Savage and Natasha Andean. Next up was the men’s clash at 1.30pm. Again the South triumphed although their 1-0 victory doesn’t tell the whole story as they dominated the game but found it hard to break down a dogged North defence. In the end, a combination of poor South finishing and last-ditch North defending meant that a goal from Lochaber and Heriot Watt University player Conor Sweeney just 8 minutes from time was all that separated the sides. The victorious South team was captained by Skye Camanachd’s Kerr Gibb and Garry Luke from Glasgow Mid Argyll whilst the North co-captains were Joe Folan and John Sweeney. Skye Camanachd’s Andrew Banks, Kinlochshiel’s Duncan MacRae and Lochcarron’s Finlay Stark also featured for the winning South side. The game acts as the main trial for inclusion in the Scotland University side that will play a British Universities hurling select in Liverpool on 26 January 2012. Scots’ manager George Hay and his assistant Kenny Ross were present to see the action. (More to follow) |
