Willie MacDonald Appointed Camanachd Association Youth Director | |
18 March 2016 Former Ballachulish and Fort William player Willie MacDonald has been co-opted onto the Camanachd Association Board of Directors where he will fill the vacant Youth Direction position. Willie has worked with Rio Tinto for 30 years and is currently employed as a Hydro Scheme Coordinator. He has been involved with shinty since handed his first caman as a three year old! Willie was brought up in Ballachulish and he played for his local team from the age of 13. He moved on to play for Fort William 11 years later and his finest moment came when Fort William won the 1992 Camanachd Cup Final and he was awarded the Albert Smith medal for man of the match. He went on to win all senior competitions and also represented Scotland on 11 occasions, once as captain. After finishing his playing career, he took up the position of assistant coach with Fort William, helping the club win the Camanachd Cup. He now referees on a Saturday afternoon and has coached at Inverlochy Primary School (P1-P7) for five years. Willie’s late father, also William MacDonald, was a well-known and respected figure in the shinty community. He was a Ballachulish committee member for over 50 years and he worked on various committees for the Camanachd Association over many years. Willie now aspires to follow on in his father’s footsteps and pass on his vast knowledge of the game to future generations. Willie MacDonald’s period of co-option runs until the 2016 Camanachd Association Annual General Meeting when he can formally stand to be elected as a Director. |
