The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 9 October 2021 | |
10 October 2021 Kyles Athletic lifted the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup, Kingussie reached the cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final and the Lovat second team claimed the Strathdearn Cup following the shinty action on Saturday 9 October 2021.
Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Celtic Cup Final Kyles Athletic 1 Oban Camanachd 1 (Kyles Athletic won 4-3 on penalties) Kyles Athletic lifted the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup for the first time since 2017 when they beat Oban Camanachd 4-3 on penalties following their 1-1 draw at the Taynuilt Sports Field. Kyles Athletic manager Robert Baxter didn’t have his problems to seek ahead of this 2pm throw up. Injury had already ruled out Thomas Whyte, Scott MacDonald and George Thomson whilst Andrew King also failed to make it after picking up a shoulder injury against Glasgow Mid Argyll. Sandy MacKenzie hadn’t properly recovered from an achilles problem suffered against Beauly earlier in the season so was also out. Donald Irvine started in defence. Oban Camanachd boss Stephen Sloss was missing Craig Easton and Chrissie MacMillan. Daniel Cameron handed the captaincy for the final to Keith MacMillan who is retiring at the end of the season. The heavy rain in the lead up to the final led to an 8am Saturday morning pitch inspection. Whilst the field was ruled playable, it was heavy and both clubs agreed that should the final be level at the end of 90 minutes, it would go straight to penalties rather than put the pitch through an extra-time period. Roddy MacDonald gave Kyles the lead on 35 minutes. Robbie Macleod’s hit in from the right was swept low across the goal by Conor Kennedy and MacDonald hit the ball first time on his left side and it went low across keeper Cammy Sutherland and into the net. However Malcolm Clark ensured the sides would go into the break on level terms when he equalised on 42 minutes. Garry Lord won possession in midfield and he spread play wide on the Oban Camanachd right. Andrew MacCuish ran out to the wing to gather the ball before cutting in towards goal, first beating Callum Millar and then evading Neil MacVicar’s challenge inside the D. MacCuish picked out an unmarked Malcolm Clark at the back post and Clark gleefully swept the ball past keeper John Whyte on the goalie’s right side to make it 1-1. The closest to a second half goal was an Andrew MacCuish shot through a ruck of players which was superbly saved and cleared in the same movement by John Whyte. Whyte also saved well to deny Connor Howe a late winner. Howe ran into the D and tried to flick the ball home but the keeper saved. With no further scoring, and the pitch cutting up as the final went on, match referee Iain Kennedy took the contest to a penalty shoot-out. Oban Camanachd went first with Scott MacMillan scoring low into the net but Robbie Macleod did like-wise to make it 1-1. Oban Camanachd’s Daniel Cameron sent his penalty over John Whyte’s left shoulder but Kyles Athletic’s Callum Millar drove his spot-hit past Cammy Sutherland’s out-stretched left foot to make it 2-2. The tension heightened as Daniel MacVicar and Luke Thornton both failed to convert. MacVicar’s strike was saved with his feet by John Whyte whilst the unfortunate Thornton ‘topped’ his penalty with the ball barely moving from the spot. Garry Lord and Ross MacRae both scored to make it 3-3 and the shoot-out was effectively now at sudden death. Oban Camanachd’s Andrew MacCuish, who has such a good scoring record against Kyles, smashed his penalty wide of John Whyte’s left post giving Roddy MacDonald the chance to win it for Kyles. The Kyles Athletic captain held his nerve to thump his penalty to the keeper’s left before stepping forward to be presented with the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup by the sponsors. Callum Millar, Neil MacVicar and Ross MacRae all stood out for Kyles.
cottages.com MacTavish Cup - Semi Final Fort William 1 Kingussie 7 Kingussie will play Kinlochshiel in this year’s cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final following the Kings 7-1 victory over Fort William at An Aird. With all the recent rain, there was relief as the Fort William pitch passed an 11am Saturday morning inspection. Ally MacRae was missing for the Fort whilst keeper Rory MacGregor, Calum Grant and Lee Bain all returned for Kingussie who were still without the injured Ryan Borthwick and the unavailable Fraser Munro. Fort William opened with a wind advantage and they shocked their more fancied opponents by taking an 8 minute lead. In a move started by Alexander Cameron, a long ball to the back post was taken down by Calum Shepherd whose shot was saved with his chest by Kingussie keeper Rory MacGregor. However the ball fell inside the D where Lachie Shaw was quickly onto it and he flicked it past the keeper to make it 1-0. Rory MacGregor made a great save with his feet to prevent Fort William from extending their lead and that proved crucial as Dylan Borthwick’s three-quarter swing drew the Kings level on 28 minutes. Borthwick’s snap-shot from near the penalty spot flew past Paul MacKay in the home goal. James Falconer put the Kings in front on 32 minutes, striking Dylan Borthwick’s low ball from the wing first-time across the keeper and into the net from around the penalty spot. Ruaridh Anderson scored a crucial third goal on 52 minutes. The goal came from a corner with Roddy Young running towards the front post to get onto James Falconer’s low ball. Young’s skewed shot came to Ruaridh Anderson and his first-time shot across the keeper bulleted into the corner of the net. James Falconer got his second on 67 minutes, running onto Roddy Young ball from the centre forward position which went straight down the middle and by past Falconer’s marker. Falconer ran onto the ball before going round the keeper to score his 20th goal of the season. Roddy Young was involved in most things for Kingussie and got the goal his play deserved on 68 minutes. Young played a clever one-two with substitute Savio Genini before playing the ball into an empty net. A second from Ruaridh Anderson made it 6-1 on 72 minutes. Roddy Young sent the ball wide to Savio Genini whose cut-back across goal found Ruaridh Anderson and he edged ahead of his marker and touched the ball by the keeper MacKay, who was racing off his line, before knocking it home. It was Roddy Young’s turn to get his second goal on 77 minutes
to make the final score 7-1. Savio Genini was again the provider as he drew a defender before slipping the ball to Young and his first-time shot beat keeper MacKay. Martin MacLean was the match referee. The cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final between Kingussie and Kinlochshiel takes place at the Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 23 October 2021.

If Lovat edged the first half, Newtonmore, with Duncan Macpherson impressing, created the better chances in the second half. At the end of the entertaining but scoreless 90 minutes, referee Willie MacDonald took the final into what would prove to be memorable extra-time period. Newtonmore’s Tristan Ross broke the deadlock just 4 minutes into extra-time and Sorley Thomson added a second on 97 minutes. Tristan Ross got his second a minute later and when Brodie MacBean made it 4-0 on 101 minutes, it seemed certain the trophy would head for the Eilan. Lovat had other ideas though and Cammy MacMillan on 110 minutes and Jamie Matheson a minute later halved the deficit. Cammy MacMillan got his second on 114 minutes and referee Willie MacDonald, positioned around the penalty spot, awarded Lovat a 119 minute penalty when Raymond Rennie was upended in the D whilst attempting to push the ball home. Jamie Matheson kept his nerve to score from the spot to make it 4-4. It was now going to take penalties to decide the outcome. Cameron McNiven put ‘More ahead with Lovat Fraser Gallacher seeing his effort saved by Jason MacDonald. Glen MacKintosh got a second for ‘More before Jamie Matheson opened Lovat’s account. Craig Macleod and Cammy MacMillan both saw their efforts saved and when Martin Bell saved from Fraser MacKintosh, Ryan Ferguson took the chance to level the shoot-out at 2-2. Sorley Thomson became the third Newtonmore player to see his spot-hit saved before Raymond Rennie made no mistake to give Lovat victory.
