The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 9 May 2015 | |
10 May 2015 The SSE Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup first round took shinty’s centre stage on Saturday 9 May 2015.
SSE Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – First Round Oban Celtic 0 Skye Camanachd 4 Skye Camanachd are through to the SSE Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup last sixteen after they beat Oban Celtic 4-0 in their 3pm throw up at Mossfield. Skye travelled South without the injured Shockie MacLennan, Iain Murray and Iain Nicolson whilst Ally “Spod” MacLeod and Kenny MacLeod were unavailable. Stewart Grant and David MacInnes were added to the squad. There was a minute’s silence ahead of throw up following the sad passing of Lochside Rovers player Jamie Kerr. After a goalless first half, Jordan Murchison put Skye ahead on 56 minutes. The Islanders benefited from a John Hill own goal just 6 minutes later. Jordan Murchison added two more goals on 80 and 82 minutes to complete his hat-trick and give Skye a 4-0 win. Skye now go into Monday morning’s SSE Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup second round draw.
Beauly 7 Strathglass 1 Like Skye, Beauly have safely negotiated both preliminary and first round ties as they defeated Strathglass 7-1 at Braeview Park. Beauly’s Ross Forbes served the second game of a two-match suspension. Jamie MacLennan was still side-lined through injury so former Uist Camanachd player Ewen Campbell continued at full back. Barrie MacDonald and Calum Morrison were also missing. Conor Ross and Ryan MacKay were free to play but they will miss next weekend’s Marine Harvest National Division match with Kilmallie as they both serve a one match ban for a bookings points accumulation. Beauly starlet Sandy Elrick justified his place in the starting line-up by twice testing visiting keeper Stevie MacLachlan in the early stages but the Strathglass custodian was up to the challenge. Indeed MacLachlan proved to be a real barrier to the Beauly attack with some fine stops, including from his son Marc MacLachlan who led the Beauly attack. The home side were hit with a classic sicker-punch as Ally Rothe netted from inside the D to put Strathglass ahead with just 60 first half seconds remaining. Beauly started the second half well and a fine Marc MacLachlan run on 48 minutes ended as he slotted the ball home to level the tie. Marc MacLachlan was proving to be a handful for the visiting defence and he got his and Beauly’s second when he thumped the ball home on his back-hand just a couple of minutes later. Sandy Elrick had a goal ruled out for offside before Marc MacLachlan completed a 10 minute hat-trick with a sweetly-struck shot on 58 minutes. Beauly continued to press and when Sean Stewart was brought down inside the D on the hour mark, referee Evan MacRae pointed to the penalty spot. David MacLean converted the penalty to make it 4-1 despite the best efforts of keeper MacLachlan. Although it was mainly one-way traffic, home goalie Josh Grant had to be at his best to keep out a Michael Stokes effort. Sean Stewart added his name to the scoresheet on 75 minutes when he collected possession from David MacLean before running forward to make it 5-1. Sandy Elrick rounded off a good performance when he scored just a couple of minutes later after a Marc MacLachlan effort was saved. And it was Marc MacLachlan who would have the final say when he scored his fourth goal of the afternoon to make it 7-1 just 4 minutes from time. MacLachlan stroked the ball home from inside the D and this time Elrick was the provider.
Ballachulish 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Glasgow Mid Argyll twice came from behind to overcome Ballachulish 3-2 in their 3pm throw up at Jubilee Park. Ballachulish had John MacDonald and Stuart Robertson on the suspension list but David Grant had served his one game ban. Lorne Brown put Balla’ ahead after 9 minutes but they only held the lead for 4 minutes when Mark Bain levelled. David MacPhee restored Balla’s lead on 52 minutes but again GMA’s response was swift as youngster Calum McLay, who had dashed up the road to play after scoring four times for the GMA seconds earlier in the day, made it 2-2 just 5 minutes later. GMA introduced Craig Anderson, back from injury, for the last half hour and he had a penalty saved by home keeper Cameron Sutherland on 78 minutes. The winning goal came just 9 minutes from time as Mark Bain grabbed his second of the afternoon to make it 3-2 and put the Glasgow side ahead for the first time in the match. And they held on to their lead during the final minutes and referee John MacGregor’s final whistle signalled GMA’s progression in shinty’s premier competition.
Aberdour 0 Caberfeidh 4 Caberfeidh successfully negotiated a trip to the Silver Sands in Fife as they beat Aberdour 4-0. Former Cabers player Same Evans was in the Aberdour side. Top team absentees meant Caberfeidh player / manager Lee Nicol listed himself in the starting line-up for the first time this season. There were also places for Scott MacLachlan and John Ritchie. David Mellis put Cabers ahead on 8 minutes whilst Lee Nicol proved his worth when he made it 2-0 on 19 minutes. However Aberdour held firm until a late double from Blair Morrison, playing up front rather than in defence, on 71 and 86 minutes, rounded off the 4-0 win. Had it not been for some good saves from home goalie Tom Bowerman, the winning margin could have been greater.
Inverness 2 Kilmory 0 Inverness beat Kilmory 2-0 in their tie at the Bught Park outside pitch. Peter Grace was suspended for Inverness after his red card against Beauly last Saturday. After a scoreless first half, Inverness went ahead on 59 minutes when Donnie Forbes played excellent long cross-field ball from the left wing which split the Kilmory defence. Davie Duncan ran on to it and finished first time to make it 1-0. Inverness doubled their advantage on 79 minutes. The Kilmory keeper took a wild swing at Somhairle MacDonald and referee Duncan Kelly awarded a penalty. The keeper redeemed himself by saving James Cameron’s spot-hit with his feet but Somhairle MacDonald put the rebound in from a tight angle on the Inverness left to clinch the 2-0 victory.
Strachur 1 Bute 4 Bute are also through to the next round as they beat Strachur 4-1 at Strachurmore. Steven Bulloch was on target for the home team but goals from Stewart Stirling, Chris Lawrence, Gordon MacMillan and Ryan Craig gave the Islanders a deserved place in the next round.
Artemis Macaulay Cup – First Round Newtonmore 5 Glenurquhart 1 Newtonmore are through to the Artemis Macaulay Cup second round after they beat Glenurquhart 5-1 at the Eilan. With Newtonmore manager Paul John MacKintosh unavailable, Iain MacKintosh looked after the side. Evan Menzies returned from injury for ‘More but Cameron Binnie was still out. Ally MacKintosh remained sidelined for the Glen who were also without Ewan Brady. The first half ended goalless and that was mainly because of some terrific saves from Glenurquhart keeper Stuart MacKintosh who continuously thwarted the ‘More forward line of Rory Kennedy, Fraser MacKintosh, Evan Menzies and Glen MacKintosh. Whenever Glen played the ball forward they found Steven MacDonald to be commanding at buckshee back and his distribution was excellent throughout the game. Glenurquhart’s Euan Lloyd sustained a head cut on 38 minutes so Connor Golabek was given a first team debut after his early season switch from Inverness. Golabek showed enough to suggest he’ll have something to offer to the Blairbeg side, especially in the second half. Lloyd reappeared for the last half-hour of the match, after receiving treatment. Newtonmore made the breakthrough on 53 minutes with Glen MacKintosh finally beating his name-sake in the Glen goal to make it 1-0. Fraser MacKintosh had the ball in the net on 62 minutes but his effort was ruled out as referee Deek Cameron had already blown his whistle as MacKintosh was impeded before scoring. Referee Cameron pointed to the penalty spot on 65 minutes when Glenurquhart’s Andrew Corrigan was felled inside the D and Neale Reid stepped up to make it 1-1. Newtonmore’s response was immediate and they went back in front a minute later with Fraser MacKintosh on target to make it 2-1. The visiting defence were under pressure and Fraser Heath was excellent for them at the back. Glenurquhart took Billy Urquhart on in place of Andrew Corrigan in an attempt to get back on level terms. Fraser MacKintosh got his second and ‘More’s third with a spectacular lob on 75 minutes and he completed his hat-trick to make it 4-1 with just 10 minutes remaining. Glenurquhart threw on James MacPherson but it was Newtonmore who would round off the 5-1 win with Glen MacKintosh’s second goal of the game a couple of minutes from time. Newtonmore will travel to play the winners of the tie between Kilmallie and Kinlochshiel in the second round.
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup – Second Round Kingussie 2 Lochside Rovers 3 Gareth Evan’s Lochside Rovers edged out an under-strength Kingussie second team by the odd goal in five in their noon throw up at the Dell. This match was carried forward from last weekend following the sad passing of Lochside Rovers player Jamie Kerr. There was a minute’s silence ahead of throw up and both teams wore black arm-bands in what was an emotional afternoon; especially for the Oban side. Kevin Thain scored the only goal of the first half after 9 minutes. However Lochside were the better side after half time and Brian MacCallum equalised a minute after the restart. Daniel MacVicar put Lochside in front for the first time on 52 minutes and Daniel MacMillan made it 3-1 on 65 minutes. Kingussie took on Ronald Ross and Kevin Thain got his and Kingussie’s second goal a couple of minutes from time but Lochside Rovers saw out to secure a home quarter-final tie with Lochaber.
Marine Harvest Premiership Kyles Athletic 4 Lovat 1 Kyles Athletic return to the top of the Marine Harvest Premiership after they beat title-contenders Lovat 4-1 at Tighnabruaich. Kyles’ defender Zac Coley played his last match for the club as he moves to work overseas and he proved to be one of the home side’s best players. Lovat were without Martin Mainland following his red card against Fort William last weekend. Defender Drew Howie was also missing. Greg Matheson put Lovat ahead after 22 minutes but a Gordon Whyte goal on 33 minutes ensured the sides went into the break all-square. Kyles number 10 Roddy MacDonald put the Tighnabruaich side ahead on 57 minutes and Grant Irvine made it 3-1 on 67 minutes. Lovat, who had a goal ruled out for offside, gave a debut to youngster Bailey MacKay in attack but the pattern remained the same and Dunkie Kerr rounded off a good day for his side when he beat Stuart MacDonald just 4 minutes later to make it 4-1. Kyles are now a point ahead of Newtonmore and Lovat at the summit although the third placed Balgate side has played two games more.
Kingussie 2 Kinlochshiel 2 Kingussie and Kinlochshiel shared the points in a 2-2 draw in their 3pm throw up at the Dell. Kingussie had to do without the suspended John Gibson. Barrie Dallas failed to recover from injury whilst Louis Munro and James MacLean were also missing. Kingussie fielded a teenage forward line with Savio Genini, 18, Rory MacGregor 18, Robert Mabon 17 and James Falconer 16. Kingussie’s James Hutchison was free to but he will miss the team’s next outing for a bookings points accumulation. ‘Shiel’s Paul MacRae was free of suspension after his red card against Kingussie a fortnight earlier. However the west coast side travelled without Oliver MacRae and David Falconer. Rory MacGregor put the Kings ahead after just 2 minutes but ‘Shiel’s John MacRae levelled just 5 minutes later. Kinlochshiel suffered a blow after 10 minutes when forward Keith MacRae was forced off through injury. When referee Ron Kennedy pointed to the penalty spot on 27 minutes, ‘Shiel’s spot-hit expert Jordan Fraser stepped up to convert to make 2-1. However with just 5 first half minutes remaining, Rory MacGregor got his and Shiel’s second goal to make it 2-2. One significant moment in the second half was the introduction of Fraser Munro who made his first appearance of the season. With no scoring in the second half, Kingussie move up to fifth place on goal difference whilst with just under half the season played, fourth place Kinlochshiel have now matched their overall points total for the whole of last season.
Inveraray 0 Lochaber 2 Lochaber collected another two welcome points, beating Inveraray 2-0 at the Winterton. Inveraray’s Chris Crawford remained out with a hand injury and the home side were also missing keeper Graham MacPherson, John Kennedy, Euan McMurdo and Lewis MacNicol. Scott MacLachlan took over from MacPherson between the sticks. Zandz Ferguson remained on the Lochaber sidelines with a foot injury whilst Kevin Ferguson was banned. However captain Martin Johnstone returned from injury. Lochaber started well and tested home keeper MacLachlan and they came within a whisker of taking the lead when Ben Delaney hit the post. Inveraray had a chance of their own when referee Billy Wotherspoon awarded them a penalty but Garry MacPherson, who was playing up front, failed to convert. Lochaber then went up to the other end of the park and took the lead. Shaun Nicolson broke forward from midfield, taking on a couple of players before firing home a 25 yard daisy-cutter to make it 1-0 with 30 minutes played. It was a very even first half but Lochaber were on top after the break. The visitors had to wait until 10 minutes from time to secure the points. Pat Toal won possession in midfield and linked up with wing forward Stuart Matheson who passed a through-ball to Martin Johnstone and he slotted the ball home from 20 yards to make it 2-0. Inveraray didn’t really look like scoring and Lochaber gave a gritty performance in which their defence was solid throughout. Lochaber’s Shaun Nicolson at full centre was the man of the match and he was powerful, skilful and direct throughout the game. The only down-side for the Spean Bridge side was two late bookings for defender Lachlan Campbell so his red card will mean a suspension. Lochaber jump to sixth in the table but Inveraray fall to second-bottom spot.
Oban Camanachd 2 Fort William 3 Fort William won the battle of the Marine Harvest National Division’s newest clubs when they beat Oban Camanachd 3-2 in their noon throw up at Mossfield. Fort William’s Ryan Campbell served a one game ban for a bookings points accumulation. There was a minute’s silence ahead of throw up to mark the sad passing of Lochside Rovers player Jamie Kerr. The visitors got off to the best possible start when Bryan Simpson grabbed the opening goal in the first minute. A 35 yard drive from Daniel Stewart made it 2-0 on 26 minutes. However Aiden MacIntyre got the home side back into the match with a goal a couple of minutes later. Ewen Campbell turned the ball into the net to put the Fort back in front on 42 minutes but there was still time for Oban’s Andrew MacCuish to score to make it 3-2 with seconds of the first half remaining. Fort William had lost Arran MacPhee early in the first half with a hamstring problem and they were put under a fair amount of pressure by the home side in the second half. However the Fort defended well and the two points, their first league win of the season, lifts them to eighth place whilst Oban Camanachd drop to the bottom of the league.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Fort William 4 Lochcarron 0 Two goals in each half meant league leaders Fort William reserves beat Lochcarron 4-0 at An Aird. Cal Brown was free of suspension for the Fort and he fired the home side into a 41 minute lead. Peter Wood made it 2-0 a minute later. Fort William top scorer Duncan Rodger grabbed another double with goals on 67 and 83 minutes to complete the 4-0 win. The Fort are now five points clear of second place Newtonmore although they have played a game more.

Allan MacDiarmid drew ‘Shiel level on 20 minutes whilst Aedan MacRae put the home side ahead just 3 minutes later. Rory Campbell got his and Lovat’s second goal on 35 minutes and it remained 2-2 at half time. And that’s the way it stayed until 10 minutes from time when Ally MacRae put Kinlochshiel ahead and the same player made it 4-2 just 4 minutes from time. Kinlochshiel climb to third place in the table whilst Lovat drop to bottom of the table.

Daniel MacLennan has boosted Glengarry’s fortune’s since his return from playing Highland league football and he put the ‘Garry ahead on 5 minutes. Stuart MacRae drew the visitors level on 16 minutes but it was all Glengarry after that. Daniel MacLennan completed his hat-trick with goals on 24 and 30 minutes to make it 3-1. John MacKinnon added a fourth on 32 minutes and Andrew Gilchrist on 35 minutes and Ruari MacDonald just 3 minutes later made it 6-1.
