The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 9 July 2022 | |
10 July 2022 Kingussie, Lovat, Oban Camanachd and either Kyles Athletic or Glasgow Mid Argyll reached the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup semi-finals following the shinty action on Saturday 9 July 2022.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup – Quarter-Finals Kinlochshiel 0 Oban Camanachd 1 David Cameron was the Oban Camanachd hero as boss Gareth Evans saw his side turn in one of their best performances of the season to beat holders Kinlochshiel 1-0 in their Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup quarter-final tie at Rèaraig. Kinlochshiel manager Johnston Gill fielded the same starting line-up that beat Caberfeidh 4-0 in the previous week’s league encounter whilst Archie MacRae recovered from a back injury to take a place on the bench alongside David Falconer. Oban Camanachd were already without Daniel MacVicar, Daniel Madej and Ross Campbell so it was a further blow when Scott McKillop was ruled out with a virus. Blair MacFarlane dropped back into defence in McKillop’s absence and David Lafferty took a place on the bench. The games started at a frantic pace and, even early on, it was clear that Scott MacMillan’s big hitting from full centre would be important to Oban Camanachd’s chances. The Oban side forced a series of early corners and Finlay MacRae had to clear the ball off the line after Evan MacLellan put a good challenge in on ‘Shiel keeper Josh Grant. ‘Shiel went on the attack and Cammy Sutherland saved with his feet from Jordan Fraser’s backhand strike and John MacRae’s later effort. Evan MacLellan shot over when the home defence didn’t deal with another weighted ball from Scott MacMillan and the sides turned around on level terms at the break. John MacRae saw sight of goal soon after the restart but Sutherland saved again with his legs whilst at the other end, Innes Jackson’s clever reverse pass sent David Cameron through on goal, However he was hauled back by Finlay MacRae just outside the D in what looked like a good free-hit to concede as the set-piece came to nothing. Cammy Sutherland showed his athleticism as he stretched his left leg towards his left post to turn John MacRae’s low shot away for a corner. The more the game went on, the more obvious it became that one goal could win the tie and that goal came for Oban Camanachd with just 7 minutes remaining. Scott MacMillan played the ball forward towards the penalty spot where it was gathered by David Cameron, who was a handful all afternoon. With his back to goal, Cameron moved the ball to his left before turning and firing a great shot across the keeper to break the deadlock. Kinlochshiel now knew they were in trouble and they went in search of a leveller but this left space for Oban Camanachd to exploit and Josh Grant raced from his line to dive and block David Cameron’s shot from just outside the D on the right with Louie MacFarlane shooting by the keeper’s right post just seconds later. ‘Shiel had a chance from a hotly disputed late corner, when the ball seemed to go out of Keith MacRae’s club but the ball was cleared up-field by, who else, Scott MacMillan.
Skye Camanachd 0 Kingussie 7 Kingussie were too strong for Skye Camanachd, winning 7-0 in perfect conditions for a game of shinty at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Skye boss Kenny Macleod had a number of issues to deal with. Somhairle MacDonald and Taylor Matheson missed out as both are on family holidays in Canada. Neil MacVicar’s second broken jaw could well mean the end of his shinty playing career on medical advice. Ross MacKinnon was out with tonsillitis whilst Martin Pringle was still feeling the effects of his hamstring injury. Fraser Munro and Lee Bain both returned for the Kings with the latter starting on the bench. Calum Grant (finger) and Rory MacKeachan (hamstring) didn’t travel and neither did Iain Fraser nor Dylan Borthwick. Skye made a bright start but Kingussie took a 6 minute lead after forcing a series of early corners. Fraser Munro’s free-hit from the left was directed goalwards by James Falconer and Roddy Young continued his super scoring sequence with a firm shot from the right. Skye launched an immediate response and Kingussie keeper Rory MacGregor stretched to make a great save under his crossbar to deny Jordan Murchison an equaliser. Kingussie went back on the attack and their forwards were rotating positions to good effect and when James Falconer ran in to take Savio Genini’s ball from the left on 20 minutes, his deft touch created a scoring chance and he made no mistake. From the restart, Savio Genini challenged Skye defender James Morrison on the Kingussie left and with the hosts claiming for a free-hit. Genini steadied himself before firing the ball over keeper Murphy Henderson to make it 3-0. Kingussie’s high tempo start was very similar to the previous week when they overcame Lovat and James Falconer sent the ball into the danger-area when Skye didn’t deal with Cameron Bremner’s hit-in from the right on 24 minutes and Roddy Young finished well to get his second goal of the game. Skye lost Jordan Murchison to a hamstring injury and under-17 player Archie Millar came on in his place. The one-way traffic continued towards the Skye goal and on 33 minutes, a quick passing move involving Liam Borthwick, Savio Genini and Roddy Young culminated with James Falconer running in to send the ball high into the goal to make it 5-0. Lee Riddoch was replaced by Lee Bain any the interval and the second half was just 6 minutes old when Roddy Young notched a remarkable fourth hat-trick in successive matches. James Falconer played a low ball from the left and Young powered a shot across the keeper from wide on the right. Rory MacGregor made a smart save with his hand from James Pringle’s strike following a rare Skye attack and he did well to get the ball away ahead on the onrushing Jamie Gillies. When Roddy Young saw two attempts blocked on the hour, Fraser Munro surged forward to crash the rebound into the roof of the net but the wing centre’s delight was short-lived as referee Deek Cameron ruled the effort out for offside. Ruaridh Anderson became the fourth Kingussie forward to add his name to the score-sheet when he made it 7-0 on 67 minutes. Roddy Young ran at the Skye defence and James Falconer’s ball deflected to Anderson who confidently flicked it home. Kingussie had a second effort ruled out for offside with James Falconer denied a hat-trick. Skye had keeper Murphy Henderson to thank for several good saves throughout the 90 minutes in what was a comfortable afternoon for the Kings.
Lovat 3 Inveraray 0 Lovat reached the Scottish semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Inveraray at Balgate. Inveraray travelled light with veteran David Robertson and boss Ruaraidh Graham included in their pool. Lewis Tawse put Lovat in front on 37 minutes with his effort taking a deflection but they didn’t secure victory until late in the tie with Graeme MacMillan finishing well on 77 minutes and Marc MacLachlan adding a third on 80 minutes. Lovat would have won by a bigger margin had it not been for Scott MacLachlan in the Inveraray goal.
