The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 9 April 2022 | |
10 April 2022 There were some great matches on Saturday 9 April 2022.
cottages.com MacTavish Cup – First Round Caberfeidh 7 Glenurquhart 4 Caberfeidh secured the final cottages.com MacTavish Cup quarter-final spot with a 7-4 victory over Glenurquhart in an enthralling tie at Castle Leod. The Glen got off to a great start with Dave MacLennan scoring in the opening minute. However Caberfeidh’s Craig Morrison celebrated his return from a three-match suspension with goals on 14 and 19 minutes to put the hosts in front. Glenurquhart regained the lead through Angus MacCallum on 44 minutes and Josh MacDonald-Haig on 48 minutes only for Taylor Condon to make it 3-3 on 54 minutes. Blair Morrison put Cabers back ahead once more on 57 minutes but a second from Dave MacLennan 10 minutes later left this breathless tie level at 4-4. Caberfeidh turned the screw late in the tie though as Craig Morrison completed his hat-trick with strikes on 73 and 80 minutes, the first time either team had led by more than one goal, before Kevin Bartlett sealed the 7-4 win just 3 minutes from time. Caberfeidh’s reward is a quarter-final tie against Fort William at An Aird on Saturday.
Mowi Premiership Newtonmore 0 Kingussie 1 Kingussie extended their lead at the top of the Mowi Premiership, beating neighbours and nearest challengers Newtonmore 1-0 in a close encounter at the Eilan. Newtonmore co-managers Norman MacArthur, Evan Cheyne and David Cheyne remained without Darrin Fowler and Drew MacDonald but Iain Robinson returned following his dislocated shoulder to take a place on the bench where he was joined by Iain Richardson and Kenny Ross. With Kingussie manager John Gibson still unavailable, Ali MacLeod continued to take charge of the side. MacLeod was once more without his entire midfield of James Hutchison, Fraser Munro and Liam Borthwick so Cameron Bremner, James Falconer and Lee Riddoch continued to deputise. Dylan Borthwick returned to the attack but Ryan Borthwick and Lee Bain were ruled out. Newtonmore started with a breeze across the Eilan in their favour and they made a bright opening without really testing Rory MacGregor in the Kingussie goal. The Kings were forced into an early change when an accidental blow to the knee forced Cameron Bremner off so Louis Munro, who travelled from Stranraer to help out with the injury crisis, made a much earlier appearance than anyone expected. However Munro helped change the dynamic of the game and he played a key role in the afternoon’s only goal on 33 minutes. James Falconer won possession in midfield following a Newtonmore hit-in. Falconer found Louis Munro whose weighted ball down the right was taken out of the air by Dylan Borthwick as he got by Declan Brannan and Roddy Young ran onto Borthwick’s ball across goal. With Craig Ritchie challenging, Young turned at the front of the D and, with keeper Owen Fraser coming off his line, he tucked the ball low into the corner of the net, by Rory Kennedy who was on the line. Just prior to the goal, ‘More’s Arron MacBain surged forward and found Duncan MacPherson who ran at the Kingussie defence before slipping the ball to Struan Ross but his shot went wide. At the other end, Roddy Young played in Savio Genini on the left and he passed the ball to Ruaridh Anderson whose low spinning shot was saved and cleared by Owen Fraser. After falling behind, ‘More went back on the attack but they had keeper Fraser to thank for a good save with his club to parry Ruaridh Anderson’s effort following a Louis Munro free-hit. Seconds before half-time, Owen Fraser saved from Roddy Young and although Savio Genini flicked the rebound into the net from close in on the left, he was correctly ruled offside. Struan Ross fizzed a shot wide soon after the restart whilst Owen Fraser made a smart save with his feet to keep out Savio Genini’s shot from left of the penalty spot. Ruaridh Anderson’s runs deep into midfield, particularly in the second half, made him difficult to mark whilst Conor Jones and Arron MacBain were putting in a power of work in ‘More midfield. Both keepers were seeing more action and Rory MacGregor saved with his feet from Duncan MacPherson following a set-piece. A Ruaridh Anderson free-hit then sent Roddy Young running across goal but his strike flew wide with Owen Fraser carefully guarding his left post. Rory MacGregor then had to look lively to turn a great Conor Jones strike from distance away for a corner. Newtonmore pushed Steven Macdonald up front and Iain Robinson made a late appearance from the bench as they went in search of a leveller. The temperature began to rise late on and referee Graham Cameron used his experience to keep control. The final chance in the game was a Savio Genini shot which was deflected off a defender for a corner. There were bookings for Newtonmore pair Steven Macdonald, for bringing down Ruaridh Anderson as he ran in towards goal, and for Declan Brannan for bundling over Dylan Borthwick when wide on the right after dropping his club. Macdonald’s booking is more problematic as it could trigger a suspension which would see him missing the Mowi Premiership match against Caberfeidh and the Artemis Macaulay Cup first round tie against Kinlochshiel; both at the Eilan.
Oban Camanachd 2 Kyles Athletic 6 Kyles Athletic beat Oban Camanachd 6-2 at Mossfield. Daniel Cameron and Daniel Sloss both returned to the Oban Camanachd defence after missing the Lovat defeat but Garry Lord looks set to be sidelined for a period with a knee injury. Scott MacMillan was unavailable. Kyles Athletic were still minus Colin MacDonald whilst a bizarre leg injury whilst playing shinty with his young daughter ruled out Kyles Athletic defender Andrew King. Roddy MacDonald got in front of his marker at the back post to slam home the opener on 11 minutes and then his looping 35 yard effort from wide on the left deceived Oban keeper Cameron Sutherland on 19 minutes. Connor Howe pulled a goal back on 27 minutes, striking the ball well from a tight angle on the right, but Kyles continued to be the more efficient in front of goal. Somhairle Thomson is settling in nicely at the higher level after joining from the Newtonmore second team during the close season and he restored the visitors’ two-goal cushion on 32 minutes. Roddy MacDonald completed his hat-trick on 36 minutes with Scott MacDonald’s 39 minute goal making it a 5-1 Kyles lead at half-time. Oban Camanachd defender Daniel Sloss had been unwell during the week and he had to succumb soon after the restart with Connor Howe also withdrawn. Ross Campbell and David Cameron came on in their place. Somhairle Thomson got his second on 67 minutes to make it 6-1. Oban Camanachd did play better in the second half but only had Daniel Cameron’s 77 minute goal to show for their efforts. Kyles have been threatening to win well against someone this season and talisman Roddy MacDonald looked back to his best whilst Ross MacRae continues to earn rave reviews at full centre. Only brothers Blair MacFarlane and Louie MacFarlane as well as Daniel Cameron got pass marks for Oban Camanachd.
Kilmallie 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Innes Blackhall marked his return from suspension with an equaliser 5 minutes from time as Kilmallie drew 1-1 with Glasgow Mid Argyll at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie manager Martin Stewart had Innes Blackhall and Michael Rodger free of their suspensions but injury ruled out Ben MacDonald GMA’s Ally McKerracher served the second game of his two-match suspension but Ewen Fraser was free of injury and he opened the scoring on 35 minutes. However Innes Blackhall earned Kilmallie a point with his 85 minute goal. Kilmallie now look forward to a cottages.com MacTavish Cup quarter-final against Lovat at Balgate.
Lovat had their designated “Free Saturday” so Kinlochshiel were without a fixture.
Mowi National Div Aberdour 1 Oban Celtic 1 Aberdour and Oban Celtic drew 1-1 in their 1pm throw up at Silversands. Aodan Burns started at wing centre for Aberdour with 14 year old Tom Shenfield and newcomer Jack Campbell both debuting from the bench. Oban Celtic boss Dougie MacIntyre missed the game as he was stateside to support son Bob MacIntyre at the US Masters. Oban Celtic played down the slope with the wind advantage in the first half but it was Aberdour who took a 12 minute lead when a great ball from Aodan Burns found full forward Tom Bowerman. He showed great composure as he drew the keeper before slotting the ball home. Both teams created chances but there was no further scoring by half-time. Oban Celtic restored parity on 58 minutes when Andy MacDonald punished a defensive lapse to score. The draw meant both teams picked up their first points of the season. Oban Celtic now travel to face Glasgow Mid Argyll in the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Celtic Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.
Beauly 6 Lochaber 0 Beauly go four points clear at the top of the Mowi National Division with a 6-0 victory over Lochaber in their 3pm throw up at Braeview Park During the week, Lochaber announced their continued first team sponsorship from Caley Timber, a loyal sponsor of the club for a number of years. Finlay MacLennan and Sean Stewart were given starting roles for Beauly after being substitutes against Skye the previous week and they justified the selection with MacLennan netting on 7 minutes and Stewart doing like-wise on 13 minutes. Finlay MacLennan got his second to make it 3-0 on 19 minutes whilst a Ross Forbes effort on 26 minutes made it 4-0 at the break. Conor Ross on 49 minutes and a second from Ross Forbes on 80 minutes completed the scoring.
Strathglass 1 Inveraray 2 Inveraray beat Strathglass 2-1 at Cannich. These were great conditions for a game of shinty despite being a few hailstone showers and it was the home side who almost took a 5 minute lead when Seth Jones found young Rhu Strachan on the left and he turned before firing a rocket-shot goalwards which Inveraray keeper Scott MacLachlan appeared to know little about until it crashed back off his faceguard, highlighting the benefits of wearing a helmet whilst playing shinty. Inveraray took the lead on 37 minutes and the move started from the right where Lewis Montgomery’s ball to the left came to Fraser Watt who shot goalwards. Home keeper Adam Todd saved but the onrushing Campbell Watt poked the ball into the net from close range. There was a great battle in the middle of the park for the remainder of the first half but very few scoring chances were created. Inveraray began to press the Strathglass defence after the restart and they got their reward on 51 minutes when a looping ball from Ruaraidh Graham landed in the D where keeper Adam Todd tried to clear. However with John Kennedy challenging, Todd was penalised for a double swing and referee John Angus Gillies had no hesitation as he pointed to the spot. Fraser Watt did his usual efficient job, drilling the penalty to the keeper’s left side. Strathglass responded and they enjoyed a period of pressure of their own, twice going close within minutes as Michael Stokes found space but he fired over the bar on both occasions. Strathglass did get a goal back on 71 minutes when a clearance came to Penri Jones on the right and his shot went through a ruck of players and into the net. Both teams continued to play some good shinty but Inveraray stayed in front to take the points. Seth Jones stood out for a youthful Strathglass side whilst Inveraray buckshee back Ross MacMillan turned in a man-of-the-match performance on his debut.
Highland Industrial Supplies Sutherland Cup - First Round Section 1 Aberdeen University W/O v Strathspey Camanachd Aberdeen University were given a walk-over when Strathspey Camanachd were unable to raise a team for their match at Balgownie.
Section 2 Lochside Rovers 1 Newtonmore 4 The Newtonmore second team came from a goal down to beat Lochside Rovers 4-1 in their 3pm throw up at Ganavan. The sides met at the second time of asking, a week after their covid postponement, in a HIS Sutherland Cup first round clash at Ganavan. The regionalised draw brought together holders Newtonmore and 2019 winners Lochside Rovers in what was the tie of the round. Lochside were able to call on Scott Robertson in defence following his outings with Oban Camanachd whilst former keeper Gavin Stobbart started at full centre. Newtonmore manager Peter Ross and his assistant Mark Taylor were without talisman Glen MacKintosh but former captain Cameron McNiven returned from injury and he started at full forward. Lochside scored first through Innes Jackson on 15 minutes but Cameron McNiven showed his worth with goals on 39 and 45 minutes to give ‘More a 2-1 interval lead. Xander Ross made it 3-1 on 50 minutes and Craig Macleod added a fourth on 58 minutes to secure a very good win. The Newtonmore colts now welcome the Kilmallie second team to the Elian in the second round with the tie currently scheduled to take place on Saturday 7 May 2022. The Newtonmore colts are off to An Aird to play their Fort William counterparts this coming Saturday.
Section 3 Skye Camanachd 3 Kinlochshiel 1 (After extra-time) Skye Camanachd were 3-1 winners against Kinlochshiel in their second team derby, a 3pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Neither Skye nor ‘Shiel had a first team fixture and a good-sized crowd gathered on a bright but cold afternoon. Skye were along usual lines with the exception of defender Allan MacLeod who was unavailable whilst Ruaraidh MacLeod returned after a period away playing football whilst Jamie Gillies played for the first time this season. ‘Shiel had a strong core to their side with Duncan Matheson at buckshee back, Rowen Myers at centre and Archie MacRae at buckshee forward. The closest we came to a first half goal was a swerving Archie MacRae shot which was brilliantly saved with his club by Skye goalie Calum Nicolson. ‘Shiel took the lead from the penalty spot on 56 minutes. Referee John Matheson penalised a kick after consulting his goal judge. Skye levelled on 63 minutes through Archie Millar. Again the offence was a kick and again the goal judge was consulted. Skye got stronger as the tie went on but it remained 1-1 until the end of the 90 minutes so extra-time ensued. A good strike into the corner of the net through a ruck of players from substitute game Angus Gilpin gave Skye a 101 minute lead. Skye sealed their place in the next round on 108 minutes. Angus Gilpin flashed a shot goalwards from the edge of the D following a ball from the left. ‘Shiel keeper Calum MacMillan made an outstanding reflex save above his head with his club but when the ball dropped, Gilpin made sure it went over the line for his second goal of the game.
Mowi North Division 1 Lochcarron 2 Glengarry 4 Glengarry bounced back from the previous week’s defeat to Inverness as they beat Lochcarron 4-2 at Battery Park. Lochcarron led through Sean McCuish’s 9 minute opener but Raymond Robertson levelled on 14 minutes. Gregor Cushnie put Lochcarron back in front just 3 minutes later only for Raymond Robertson to equalise for a second time a couple of minutes before half-time. David Rodgers hit a second half double on 68 and 80 minutes to give Glengarry both points.
Inverness 1 Kingussie 0 The Kingussie second team stay top of Mowi North Division 1 despite going down 1-0 to the Inverness first team at the Bught Park. Kingussie’s first team absences inevitably restricted second team manager Iain Borthwick’s selection options with Cameron Bremner, Lee Riddoch, Iain Fraser and George Taylor-Ramsay all with the senior side. Inverness were a more experience and physically bigger side and the goal that separated the sides came from Finlay Calder on 34 minutes. Next up for the Kingussie second team is a league meeting with the Glenurquhart seconds at Blairbeg on Saturday.
Glenurquhart 1 Lovat 4 The Lovat seconds enjoyed a 4-1 triumph over the Glenurquhart seconds at Blairbeg. Lovat, who were able to include Duncan Davidson for the first time this season, got off to a flying start with Lewis Bryson netting in the opening minute and Jack Rennie making it 2-0 a minute later. Glen’s James MacPherson halved the deficit 10 minutes into the second half but goals from Mitchell Leslie on 75 minutes and Raymond Rennie on 80 minutes made the final score 4-1. Glenurquhart’s James MacPherson was sent off by referee Caitlin Mutch on 81 minutes.
Fort William P v Caberfeidh P The match between the Fort William colts and the Caberfeidh colts at An Aird will be rescheduled as Cabers were unable to raise a team. Caberfeidh will also be deducted two points.
Mowi South Division 1 Kyles Athletic 0 Col Glen 3 Col Glen made the short distance to Tighnabruaich to play the Kyles Athletic juniors and returned with both points following a 3-0 win. Andrew MacVicar scored the only goal of the first half on the half-hour with Jamie MacVicar adding a brace on 51 and 70 minutes so Col Glen stay top of the league.
Ballachulish 3 Tayforth 2 Ballachulish go second in Mowi South 1 after beating bottom side Tayforth 3-2 at the Jubilee Park. David Grant put Balla’ ahead on 15 minutes but Brendan Duggan equalised a minute later. Jack MacLean put Ballachulish back in front on 20 minutes but Michael MacLeod drew Tayforth level for a second time, making it 2-2 on the hour. And it began to look as if it just might just end that way until David Grant got his second goal of the game a minute from time to give Balla’ victory.
Bute 8 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Bute were too strong for the Glasgow Mid Argyll colts, winning 8-1 at the Meadows. Both clubs fielded two teams on the Saturday, with both GMA fixtures away from home, so resources were stretched and the visitors travelled with just twelve players whilst the Islanders were only able to name one substitute. Bute created a couple of opportunities but there was a touch of fortune about Robin MacAlister’s opener on 5 minutes. GMA struck back albeit Neil Robertson’s effort on 20 minutes came against the run of play to make it 1-1. The Glasgow side suffered the inevitable injury that seems to curse teams with no substitutes and they had to play over half the match with eleven players. Bute continued to press and Leon MacMillan put them back in front a minute before half time. Scott Harvey made it 3-1 on 50 minutes with Ryan Craig adding a brace on 55 and 60 minutes as the pressure began to tell on GMA. Three goals in the final third put gloss on the win. Josh Cowan added a sixth on 65 minutes and Scott Harvey completing his hat-trick with efforts on 77 and 87 minutes. Bute go third in the division despite having played the fewest matches.
Mowi North Div 2 Boleskine 1 Kilmallie 2 Martyn Cameron scored twice as the Kilmallie second team defeated Boleskine 2-1 at Smith Park. All the goals came in the first half. Martyn Cameron gave Kilmallie a 7 minute lead and although Liam Girvan levelled on 35 minutes, Martyn Cameron’s second just 5 minutes later was enough to win both points.
Beauly 5 Lewis Camanachd 1 A delayed ferry meant the meeting between the Beauly colts and Lewis Camanachd was switched from Braeview Park to Balgate with throw up delayed until 1.45pm. Beauly, with Callum MacVicar catching the eye, ran up a 3-0 interval lead through Lee Dunbar on 19 minutes, Gary Marshall on 23 minutes and Lee Dunbar again on 39 minutes. Kyle MacDonald added a fourth on 55 minutes and although Ally Lamont pulled a goal back a minute short of the hour, Lee Dunbar went on to complete his hat-trick on 73 minutes.
Inverness 1 Strathglass 0 The Inverness reserves edged out the Strathglass reserves 1-0 in their 3pm throw up at the Bught Park. Finlay Calder scored the only goal of the game on 34 minutes.

Duncan MacEwan, who showed up well in a substitute appearance for the seniors the previous week, opened the scoring on 22 minutes with Scott Burnett adding a second on the half hour. Alan Mackie rounded off the win on 63 minutes.
Kilmory 2 Ardnamurchan 2 Kilmory hauled back a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Ardnamurchan at MacRae Park. Stuart MacLachlan on just 2 minutes and Steven Gilmour’s own goal on 53 minutes gave Ard’ a deserved advantage. However Alec Cunningham on 78 minutes and Jamie Baxter a couple of minutes from time ensured Kilmory got a share of the points.
Strachur-Dunoon 2 Bute 3 The Bute second team came from two goals down to beat Strachur-Dunoon 3-2 at Strachurmore. Andrew Wilson got the hosts off to a great start with goals on 6 and 7 minutes although Bute’s Ian McDonald pulled a goal back a couple of minutes later. Bute turned the match on its head when William Boag equalised on 61 minute and Ian McDonald got his second just 60 seconds later with what proved to be the winner.
Inveraray P Aberdour P The Aberdour seconds were unable to raise a team for their game against the Inveraray seconds at the Winterton so the hosts have been awarded the points.
