The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 7 August 2021 | |
08 August 2021 Kingussie will face Kyles Athletic in this month’s Artemis Macaulay Cup Final whilst Kinlochshiel and Kyles Athletic progress in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup following the shinty action on Saturday 7 August 2021.
Artemis Macaulay Cup Quarter Final Kinlochshiel 2 Lovat 3 Lovat reached the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals with a 3-2 victory over Kinlochshiel in a thrilling 7pm throw up at Blairbeg on Wednesday 4 August 2021. ‘Shiel were missing three of their recognised back four with Mark MacDonald, Conor Cormack and David Falconer all injured. Duncan Matheson, Jonnie MacAskill and Paul MacRae joined Finlay MacRae at the back. Lovat gave Bailey MacKay a start at wing centre after his impressive appearance from the bench against Skye the previous Saturday. Lewis Tawse pushed forward into attack with Marc MacLachlan dropping to the bench. It took Lovat 110 minutes to break the deadlock against Skye the previous weekend but they took the lead in this encounter after just two minutes. Fraser Heath broke down the left before cutting the ball back for Callum Cruden. Cruden came away from goal before turning and sending a low shot goalwards. ‘Shiel keeper Josh Grant saved with his feet but Lewis Tawse was quickly in to force the rebound into the net via the post. Ali Nixon pulled ‘Shiel level on 38 minutes with a great strike. The Lovat defence didn’t deal with Keith MacRae’s free-hit from deep and Nixon’s strike from right of centre flew into the net, beating keeper Stuart MacDonald just inside his right post. The second half was only a couple of minutes old when Greg Matheson put Lovat back in front. Matheson took his time before pushing a free-hit wide to Lorne MacKay on the left. Matheson flicked MacKay’s return into the air before volleying on his backhand across the keeper from left of centre. Fraser Heath made it 3-1 on the hour with a precise finish from the tightest of angles. Greg Matheson sent the ball down the right and Heath got away from Finlay MacRae and with Josh Grant coming off his line. Heath’s delicate one-handed touch directed the ball low into the far corner of the net. Heath’s effort proved decisive as Jordan Fraser cut the deficit to a single goal when he scored on 66 minutes. Duncan “DA” MacRae won possession on the ‘Shiel right before sending the ball down the line to substitute Archie MacRae. MacRae skipped by his marker before his low ball from the right was gathered by Jordan Fraser with his back to goal. Fraser turned and struck the ball low into the corner of the net, beating the keeper on his left side. ‘Shiel pushed hard to trigger extra-time but it’s Lovat who will play Kingussie in the semi-finals.
Artemis Macaulay Cup - Semi Final Kingussie 4 Lovat 0 Kingussie will meet Kyles Athletic in this year’s the Artemis Macaulay Cup Final after the Kings scored four times in the second half to defeat Lovat in their noon throw up at Braeview Park. After a scoreless first half, Roddy Young gave Kingussie a 51 minute lead, turning to hammer home Dylan Borthwick’s ball from the right at the second attempt. Ruairidh Anderson made it 2-0 on 68 minutes with a bouncing shot that took a deflection on its way past a diving Stuart MacDonald in the Lovat goal. James Falconer added a third after a great run down the right on 79 minutes, finishing from a tight angle. James Falconer got his second and Kingussie’s fourth with just 3 minutes remaining, gathering James Hutchison’s ball forward before finishing from a central position. Kingussie’s Ruaridh Anderson was the sponsor’s choice as Artemis man of the match. The 2021 Artemis Macaulay Cup Final between Kingussie and Kyles Athletic takes place at Mossfield on Saturday 21 August 2021 with a 4pm throw up. The match will be live on BBC ALBA.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup – Quarter-Finals Beauly 2 Kyles Athletic 2 (after extra-time: Kyles won 3-2 on penalties) It took a penalty shoot-out to eventually separate Beauly and Kyles Athletic in their 3pm throw up at Braeview Park. The closest to a goal during the regulation 90 minutes came when referee Steven MacLachlan awarded Kyles a second half penalty but Robbie Macleod’s effort went wide of target. However Robbie MacLeod atoned for that miss just 4 minutes into extra-time when he turned home Innes MacDonald’s low cross from the left at the second attempt from the left of the D. Disaster struck for Beauly when Angus Renwick attempted to clear the ball for a corner on 98 minutes but ended up turning it into his own net. Beauly were given hope on 104 minutes when keeper John Whyte tried to clear Calum Morrison’s long free-hit but, under pressure from David MacLean, he ended up diverting the ball into his own net. Jack MacDonald made it 2-2 to the delight of the home support on 109 minutes. MacDonald beat keeper John Whyte just inside his left post with a good drive. With no further scoring, referee Steven MacLachlan took the tie to penalties. Kyles Athletic ran out 3-2 winners in the shoot-out. Robbie Macleod, Thomas Whyte and Callum Millar all converted for Kyles with David MacLean and keeper Duncan Anderson doing like-wise for Beauly.
Kinlochshiel 6 Oban Celtic 0 Kinlochshiel reached the Scottish semi-finals with a 6-0 victory over Oban Celtic at Rèaraig. ‘Shiel were still missing defensive trio Conor Cormack, Mark MacDonald and David Falconer. Oban Celtic were without Lennon Campbell so youngster Ewen Campbell played the 90 minutes. Ross MacMillan was one of several Celtic players playing with an injury and he only managed a 15 minute appearance and is clearly still bothered by a foot injury suffered against Bute. Keith MacRae gave ‘Shiel a 4 minute lead with a crisp shot from a tight angle and it was MacRae again on 11 minutes when he got his stick in ahead of his marker at the edge of the D, with the keeper coming off his line Celtic were creating chances and Daniel MacMillan went close after gathering Andy MacDonald’s ball forward and beating his marker. Oban Celtic lost Dylan Cooke on the half-hour with the recurrence of a foot injury. John MacRae added a third on 44 minutes when a long ball out of the home defence went over Lewis Macphee and MacRae went on to score. Ali Nixon made it 4-0 on 53 minutes and the heavens opened for a 15 minute period, making things very difficult for the players. The heavy rain meant vision was limited and Oban Celtic keeper Allan Duncan stick flew out of his hands as he tried to launch a goal-hit. The pitch held up remarkably well considering the onslaught although it was understandably slippery. Archie MacRae’s 30 yard shot on 66 minutes deceived keeper Duncan who went for the ball with his club above his head and Zander MacRae rounded off the scoring 5 minutes from time, capitalising when the ball stuck on the sticky surface as Peter Currie tried to clear. Allan Duncan in the Oban Celtic goal made several fine saves over the course of the match.
Mowi Senior League A Skye Camanachd 3 Glenurquhart 2 Skye Camanachd were 3-2 winners in their 3pm throw up against Glenurquhart at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 7 August 2021. Skye took a 9 minute lead when a wonderful Jamie Gillies reverse pass from a central position sent Jordan Murchison through and he finished well. The same two players combined once more as Murchison turned provider on 22 minutes when he played in Jamie Gillies who fired the ball high past Stuart MacKintosh from the right of the D. Just 4 minutes later, a superb long James Morrison ball from deep inside his own half found Iain MacLennan of the right of the D and he swept the ball home to make it 3-0 at the break. The Glen were never out of things though and Josh MacDonald-Haig turned home a rebound off Skye keeper Ryan Morrison on 55 minutes with Connor Golabek shooting low into the net from the left a minute later to make it 3-2. Skye saw out the remainder of the game but the win came at a cost with Jordan Murchison picking up a hamstring injury and Ross Gordon suffering a suspected broken thumb.
Lochaber 0 Fort William 4 Fort William beat Lochaber 4-0 in their 3pm derby clash at Spean Bridge. Referee Calum Girvan awarded the Fort a penalty on 16 minutes for hacking on Arran MacPhee as he was about to score. MacPhee took the penalty himself, beating Jack Dignan in the home goal. Victor Smith scored a fine goal 5 minutes before the break, losing his marker at a corner before controlling the ball into his path and calmly rolling it past the advancing keeper to make it 2-0. It got better for the visitors when Arran MacPhee got his second just a minute before the break to make it 3-0. Arran MacPhee completed his hat-trick on 74 minutes with his shot taking a deflection off Barry MacDonald’s club, wrong-footing the keeper. It was a difficult week for Lochaber as they were also forced to forfeit their Alvance British Aluminium Balliemore Cup first round tie against Inverness for fielding an ineligible player. Inverness went into the quarter-final draw where they will host Beauly. The other ties see Skye welcome Aberdour, Ballachulish at home to Inveraray and Bute having home advantage against Strathglass. The ties are scheduled for this coming Saturday.
Mowi Senior League B Caberfeidh 8 Strathglass 3 The match between Caberfeidh and Strathglass at Castle Leod was brought forward to Friday 6 August 2021 with a 7pm throw up and there were goals galore for the spectators to enjoy. Caberfeidh’s Liam Symonds served a one-match ban for a disciplinary points accumulation. Connor MacGregor was free to play but misses his side’s next outing for a disciplinary points accumulation. Keith Nicolson and Sandy Fraser join Hamish Stoddart and Neil Hope to increase the former Boleskine contingent at Strathglass. However Scott Douglas and Lewis Douglas and Neil Hope were missing for this one. Cabers took a two-goal lead through Kevin Bartlett on 10 minutes and Craig Morrison a couple of minutes later. However Strathglass struck back with Ruairidh Strachan on 17 minutes and Donald Fraser on the half-hour making it 2-2. A second from Kevin Bartlett just 3 minutes later gave the hosts a narrow 3-2 lead at the interval. Craig Morrison got his second on 54 minutes but a strike from Penri Jones a couple of minutes after meant Caberfeidh only led 4-3 as the match moved into the final half-hour. Colin MacLennan added a fifth for Cabers before Kevin Bartlett stole the show, adding a further treble within 5 minutes to make it 8-3. The Scotland international was afforded too much space and his goals on 73, 76 and 78 minutes took his tally to five strikes.

Strathglass 2 Lovat 4 The Lovat seconds beat the Strathglass seconds 4-2 in their 4pm throw up at Cannich. Gary Marshall scored on 10 and 33 minutes, either side of the impressive Cammy MacMillan’s 17 minute strike to give Lovat a 3-0 lead at the break. When Raymond Rennie made it 4-0 on 48 minutes, it looked all over for Strathglass. Sam Cummings on 68 minutes and James Ross on 72 minutes cut the deficit to 4-2 but it’s Lovat who progress.
Bullough Cup - Second Round Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Lochside Rovers 6 Lochside Rovers recovered from the loss of an early goal to beat the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team 6-3 in their noon throw up at Peterson Park. GMA first team manager Mark Bain featured for the seconds at half back whilst there was also a place for Iain Luke. With no Oban Camanachd fixture, senior manager Stephen Sloss was keen that some of the club’s fringe players were given a run out for Lochside so Gareth Evans had Ross Campbell, Blair MacFarlane, Evan MacLellan and Lewis Buchanan to call on. Lochside started with the wind in their favour but it was GMA who took the lead through Iain Luke on 7 minutes. Luke got to the ball just ahead of Scott Robertson and his 20 yard effort rose into the roof of the net. It only took Lochside 3 minutes to level with a brilliantly worked goal. Lochside played with a two-two formation in attack and their full forwards combined as Lewis Buchanan turned his man on the right and his low ball to the near post was sent high into the net by Ross Campbell with a full swing. Innes Jackson tuned home a rebound on 19 minutes to put the Oban side ahead. GMA keeper Nathan Ross saved Lewis Buchanan’s strike with his feet and as the ball spun into the air, Jackson got to it before the keeper could clear. Former Kilmallie player Nick Lavin levelled on the half-hour from close in after Lochside failed to clear their lines. The ball broke to Lavin whose half-swing sent the ball into the top corner of the net. The Oban side responded well and only took them a minute to regain their lead with Ross Campbell driving an ankle-high shot into the corner of the net and an end-to-end first half finished with Lochside 3-2 ahead. Lochside replaced Jamie Anderson with Robbie Brown with Innes Jackson going onto the wing. The match was level once more just 4 minutes into the second half when Cailean MacInnes was at the back post to turn home a cross from the right on his back-hand. The low shot gave Lochside keeper Dougie MacDonald no chance. Lochside regained the lead on 53 minutes and this time they stayed in front. Lewis Buchanan was afforded too much space around the penalty spot and he punished the hosts with a low finish. A good strike from Ross Campbell a minute later gave Lochside a cushion before David Cameron turned his marker around 15 yards out and he ran in before beating the keeper to make it 6-3 on 73 minutes. Cameron had been suffering from a back problem ahead of the game and he was withdrawn just after with Daniel Pearson taking over. Jordan Kerr and Louis MacFarlane were given a run out in attack near the end. Jordan Kerr and Ross Campbell played well for the Oban side with 14 year old Alexander MacDonald coming on for Calum MacMillan and playing really well.
