The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 6 May 2023 | |
07 May 2023 There were a mixture of league and cup fixtures on Saturday 6 May 2023.
Mowi Premiership Newtonmore 1 Skye Camanachd 2 Few would have fancied Skye Camanachd to take anything from their match against league leaders Newtonmore at the Eilan but the Islanders upset the odds to claim a 2-1 win. Newtonmore’s Arron MacBean, who picked up an injury after scoring in the previous week’s 4-0 win over Fort William, started on the bench as did Craig Ritchie, Fraser MacKintosh and Martin Hall. Skye travelled without Jordan Murchison, Ross Gordon and Kenny Cushnie whilst John Gillies, who has a hamstring problem, was rested ahead of this Saturday’s cottages.com MacTavish Cup semi-final against Glenurquhart in Portree. The first half was a story of missed opportunities, particularly by Newtonmore until the home side broke the deadlock on 40 minutes. Iain Robinson’s shot deflected by Skye goalie Murphy Henderson off defender James Morrison’s caman, wrong footing the keeper. Newtonmore laid siege on the Skye goal in the second half as they looked for the second goal that would surely put Skye to the sword but the visiting rear-guard, with stand-in full back James Morrison and buckshee back William MacKinnon both outstanding, defended for their lives. The goal never came though and, just a minute short of the hour, William MacKinnon galloped out of the Skye defence. His run wasn’t tracked, and MacKinnon ended up hammering Ruaraidh MacLeod’s pass high into the net to make it 1-1. ‘More went back on the attack but they couldn’t break Skye down and they were made to pay in the most dramatic fashion. There were just 4 minutes remaining when Neil MacVicar’s hit-in got by Rory Kennedy and came to Ruaraidh MacLeod at the back post. MacLeod’s first time shot flew past a helpless Kenny Ross in the home goal to give Skye an unlikely 2-1 lead. It was now practically ten versus ten in the Skye half for the remainder of the contest as Newtonmore threw everything at their opponents. Throughout the game, the blue and whites had one-on-ones with the keeper, an Iain Robinson effort off the post, strikes wide of target and a penalty claim when Skye keeper Murphy Henderson kicked the ball, but referee Martin MacLean waved away the claims and it did seem to have taken place with the ball just out of play. Newtonmore threw everything at the Skye for the remainder of the contest but it was the Islanders who left with both points as ‘More suffered their first defeat of the season.
Kinlochshiel 7 Caberfeidh 2 Kinlochshiel beat Caberfeidh for the second successive Saturday, this time 7-2 in their 3pm throw up at Rèaraig. ‘Shiel’s Keith MacRae recovered from a knock to take a place on the bench alongside Oliver MacRae, Jonnie MacAskill, Arran Jack and Paul MacRae. Caberfeidh travelled without Kevin Bartlett, Connor Golabek and Ben MacDonald, There were early chances at both ends with Archie MacRae twice forcing Caberfeidh keeper Iain McCall to save with his feet. At the other end, a swerving Craig Morrison shot from left of centre went over the bar. A long ball over the top then sent Craig Morrison through on goal but a combination of full back Mark MacDonald and keeper Josh Grant kept him out. ‘Shiel took the lead on 17 minutes. Iain McCall did well to get Ali Nixon’s effort away for a corner. Finlay MacRae then showed determination to get onto David Falconer’s corner from the right and the ball spun over the goal line. When Conor Cormack launched a hit-in from the right, Ali Nixon’s rasping shot from the right of the penalty spot took a slight deflection on its was inside the keeper’s right post on 25 minutes and it looked all over when Finlay MacRae finished off a good passing move to get his second goal of the game on 42 minutes. Caberfeidh boss Garry Reid rallied his troops at the break and they made an impressive start to the second half. There were only a couple of second half minutes played when Craig Morrison gathered a low ball to the left of the D with his back to goal. Morrison turned and, on his left side, he fired low by the keeper’s feet to pull a goal back. Then, after good play from Kyle Grant on 52 minutes, there seemed little danger when Craig Morrison was sandwiched between two ‘Shiel defenders but he turned and wriggled free before shooting low into the goal and there was now only one goal in it. Josh Grant then did well to get Craig Morrison’s turn and shot away for a corner before saving well again for Morrison shortly after as Caberfeidh went for a leveller. However, at the other end, good battling from Finlay MacRae won possession and he played in Archie MacRae who scored from a tight angle on the left to make it 4-2 on 61 minutes. The same two players combined straight from the restart as Finlay MacRae exchanged passes with Archie MacRae before completing his hat-trick. A low strike from skipper Jordan Fraser, after a neat passing move cut through the visiting defence, made it 6-2 on 71 minutes and a second from Archie MacRae 78, an acrobatic effort at the back post, completed the scoring. Referee Graham Cameron was in control throughout, and he awarded Caberfeidh a penalty when Josh Grant kicked the ball after coming off his line to clear. Craig Morrison stepped up with the chance of a hat-trick but keeper Grant redeemed himself as he saved with his legs.
Oban Camanachd 2 Lovat 2 Lovat scored twice in the final 5 minutes to draw 2-2 with Oban Camanachd before a large crowd at Mossfield. Oban Camanachd trio Daniel Cameron, Daniel MacCuish and Jamie Forgrieve all shook off knocks from the previous week with Cameron and MacCuish starting and Forgrieve starting on the bench. Lovat were without Lewis Tawse, Graham MacMillan and Scotland attacker Greg Matheson so fielded a forward line of Craig Mainland, Sam Stubbs, Marc MacLachlan and James MacPherson. Oban Camanachd started well enough and they took the lead with a goal straight from the training ground. Daniel MacCuish played a quick free-hit to Malcolm Clark and he slipped the ball by Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald, who was racing off his line, to make it 1-0 with 10 minutes played. The home side were unable to add to their tally and neither keeper had much to with the game mainly played between the two half back lines. Oban Camanachd had introduced Daniel Madej and all four forwards – Daniel Cameron, Daniel Madej, Malcolm Clark and Daniel MacCuish - combined on 82 minutes and MacCuish rounded the keeper at the back post to score a well worked goal. Then, with just 5 minutes remaining, referee Deek Cameron judged that Louie McFarlane had fallen on the ball and he awarded Lovat a penalty. James MacPherson took it and thumped the ball between the keeper’s legs to set up a grandstand finish. With just a minute remaining, Lovat found a leveller. A corner came into the Oban goal area, low and hard. Blair McFarlane couldn’t stop the ball at the front post and it came through to Marc MacLachlan at the back post and he lifted the ball high into the net to make it 2-2. Oban Camanachd defender Scott Mckillop suffered an accidental blow to the face during the game but was able to continue.
Kingussie 4 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Kingussie go second in the league after beating Glasgow Mid Argyll 4-0 in their 3pm throw up at the Dell. Roddy Young returned for Kingussie and he started on a strong bench which included James Falconer and Savio Genini. It has been a difficult start to the season for Alan MacRae’s GMA side as despite playing well for periods in games, they have yet to collect a league point and are rooted to the bottom of the table. That of course wasn’t Kingussie’s concern and Ruaridh Anderson’s early double on 3 and 15 minutes eased them into the game. His opener came from a Lee Bain ball on the right and Anderson gathered possession in the full forward position with his back to goal. He took one touch before turning and hitting ball low into the goal. His second started when full centre Liam Borthwick spread play out to the right where Alexander Michie ran across and he played a low switch to the back post where Ruaridh Anderson smacked the ball high above the keeper’s head. Kingussie lost Lee Bain to a tight hamstring early in the first half and he came off as a precaution. Roddy Young took over, but he was later withdrawn after jarring his knee. Alexander Michie added a third on 29 minutes, winning a tackle around 25 yards from goal and flicking the ball over his opponent’s stick before striking a shot on the turn which flew into the side netting to the keeper’s left. Substitute Savio Genini again proved his worth as an impact player when he sealed victory on 76 minutes. Ruaridh Anderson played the ball in from the right wing to just outside the penalty spot where Genini took it in to his feet before turning on his backhand and shooting into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal to make it 4-0.
Beauly 1 Kyles Athletic 2 Kyles Athletic edged out Beauly, gaining two valuable points by winning 2-1 at Braeview Park. Kyles started well before Beauly came more into the game, but the first half ended goalless. The excellent Conor Kennedy gave Kyles the lead, just 4 minutes after the restart, with a great back-hand strike. David MacLean drew Beauly level on 65 minutes, getting away from Callum Millar to score following a corner. Ross MacRae got the winner on 78 minutes, striking the ball by the keeper although Kyles had their keeper John Whyte to thank for a great late save to help earn two valuable points. Kyles Athletic’s Innes MacDonald, just back after injury, had to come off after falling awkwardly just before the break and he was replaced by Finan Kennedy.
Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup – First Round Northern Section Fort William 1 Kilmallie 3 Just three weeks after losing 4-1 to Fort William at An Aird in the league, Kilmallie turned the tables on their neighbours with a 3-1 victory in their Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup first round tie at the same venue. The Fort had the best of the first half but Kilmallie took the lead on 28 minutes when Michael Rodger gathered a huge hit-in from the left and, at the second attempt, he beat the keeper from a tight angle on the left. However, straight from the restart, Fort William surged up the middle of the pitch and Victor Smith played in Cam Stephen to score. Michael Rodger put Kilmallie back in front just 7 minutes into the second half. A quick Kilmallie break forward saw Calum MacDougall slip the ball across to Rodger on the right and he fired home on his left side. Kilmallie controlled the second half and Lewis Birrell made it 3-1 with just 15 minutes remaining, sending the ball over the keeper when the Fort defence failed to clear Innes Blackhall’s free-hit from the right.
Glenurquhart 1 Glengarry 0 Mowi National Division side Glenurquhart beat Glengarry from Mowi North Division 1 1-0 at Blairbeg. Southern Section Bute 4 Aberdour 0 Bute turned in a good performance to beat Aberdour 4-0 at the Meadows. Bute took the lead through Iain McDonald on 25 minutes and Ryan Craig scored a deserved second on the stroke of half-time. Col Glen led through Dan MacDonald’s goal on 13 minutes and Sandy Paterson added a second on 19 minutes although he seemed to pick up an injury in the process. When referee Graham Fisher awarded Strathglass a penalty on 61 minutes, Penri Jones scored from the spot to make it 2-1 and although a second from Dan MacDonald restored Col Glen’s two-goal cushion on 65 minutes, Ruaraidh Strachan reduced the deficit to one goal with just 6 minutes to go. Col Glen will be pleased to see Dan MacDonald playing his first full 90 minutes for 6 weeks after pulling his hamstring.

Highland Industrial Supplies Sutherland Cup – Second Round Section 1 Kingussie 2 Newtonmore 5 Newtonmore’s midweek bye against Strathspey set up a second team derby against the Kingussie at the Dell. Newtonmore had Rasmus Cheyne back, but James Ross was missing for this noon throw up. Robert Shiells returned to the Kingussie line up and he put his side ahead on 9 minutes, taking the ball in a central position before turning and striking a low shot which deceived keeper Jason Macdonald. However, Euan Dingwall levelled on 35 minutes. Glen MacKintosh found Charlie Ferguson with a reverse pass, and he touched the ball to Dingwall who slammed it into the net from around the penalty spot. ‘More took the lead for the first time in the tie on 56 minutes through Brodie MacBean who took a short ball from Glen MacKintosh on the run with his back-hand strike going in off the keeper’s feet. The large crowd were getting plenty to cheer about as Russell Menzies got his second on 64 minutes, with a turn and low strike from a central position to make it 2-2. The tie remained level for less than a minute as Euan Dingwall got his second straight from the restart. Glen MacKintosh helped make space for Dingwall to net from a tight angle on the left. Holders Newtonmore went on to pull away with substitute Jamie Robinson adding a brace on 70 and 73 minutes. His first was a turn and shot from Glen MacKintosh’s knock down following a hit-in on the right with the ball creeping over the line off the keeper’s foot. Rory Barclay hammered home from Rhuairaidh MacDonald’s corner on the left on 29 minutes whilst Duncan “Ach” MacRae’s drive from distance on the right made it 4-0 a couple of minutes later. Duncan MacMillan took his haul to four goals with two more efforts late in the half. First, on 43 minutes, he sent the ball high into the goal from 25 yards out and then, on the stroke of half time, Duncan MacMillan struck another effort from range to make it 6-0 at half-time. Lochcarron made changes at the break and ‘Shiel would only score twice more. Seumas Martin drifted the ball high over the keeper from the left on 56 minutes and Seumas Martin scored again on 77 minutes, this time running quickly in to get to a rebound after Lochcarron goalie Daniel MacKay had saved from Duncan MacMillan. Daniel Pearson made a welcome return after an injury lay-off and he did very well when he came on in the second half. Lochside went ahead on 7 minutes thanks to an opportunist Jordan Kerr strike. Scott MacMillan’s big hitting was had a significant influence on the game and, on 21 minutes, he unleashed an effort from inside his own half.
