The Shinty Round Up - Saturday 5 February 2022 | |
06 February 2022 The wet weather had an adverse effect on the first round of pre-season friendlies on Saturday 5 February 2022.
Ardnamurchan 2 Lochaber 5 The Lochaber second team were 5-2 winners against Ardnamurchan in their 1pm throw up at Strontian. David Langan put the visitors ahead before Donald MacRae made it 2-0. Another from David Langan and Ben MacDonald gave Lochaber a 4-0 cushion but Ard’ pulled a goal back before the break. The teams each scored a goal each in the second half with Lochaber running out 5-2 winners.
John MacKinnon Sixes Skye Camanachd hosted the eighth John MacKinnon Sixes at the Portree High School astro pitch. Six teams entered this popular event which, despite a couple of hail showers, was played in mostly favourable conditions. Crossals were the winners, beating Chips & Co 4-1 in the final. James “Chips” Munro gave his side a surprise lead but William MacKinnon’s leveller took the final to extra-time. Iain Nicolson, another from William MacKinnon and Ruaraidh MacLeod sealed the win. Keeper Murphy Henderson was named overall player of the tournament and Abby Maclean was the women’s player of the tournament. James Munro took the veteran’s award with Charlie Latton top of the under-17s.
Liz Young Sixes James Falconer captained Gynack to success in the six-team Liz Young Sixes which took place at the Dalfaber Sports Hall, Aviemore. Liz Young was a member of one of the great shinty families. Her father William (Bill) Dallas played for Kingussie during the 1930s whilst her Grandfather, the great John Dallas, who played in the earliest Kingussie teams during the 1890s, is modelled on top of shinty’s greatest prize; the Camanachd Cup. Liz was married to Derek Young and their son Dallas Young was a Camanachd Cup winner with the club whilst his son Roddy features prominently in the current Kingussie first team. Liz followed all the Kingussie teams and the Liz Young Rosebowl is a fitting reminder of one of the club's most loyal supporters. Kingussie first and second team managers John Gibson and Iain Borthwick allocated their Kingussie players, along players from Badenoch, into six mixed teams named Feshie, Gynack, Raitts, Ruthven, Spey and Tromie. The sides played eachother twice ahead of the semi-final stages. Following the group games, Gynack had to come from behind to edge out Ruthven in their semi-final with Tromie defeating Raitts in their last-four tie. Gynack ran out convincing 3-0 victors against Tromie in the final with James Falconer, Ryan Borthwick and Lee Bain getting the goals. They were deserved winners, only drawing one match and winning the others throughout the day’s play. With club legend Donnie Grant in attendance, the Liz Young Rosebowl was presented to Gynack captain James Falconer by Liz Young's daughter Tricia and Great Grandson Tommy. It was a family affair with Dallas Young refereeing most of the games, showing that a change of shinty career to match official is well within his capabilities.
