The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 21 February 2015 -UPDATED! | |
22 February 2015 With the new shinty season just a couple of weeks away, preparations continued and a number of matches beat the wintery weather on Saturday 21 February 2015.
Ballachulish 0 Lochside Rovers 8 Lochside Rovers recorded an impressive 8-0 win over Ballachulish in their 2pm throw up at Jubilee Park. With several Balla’ players at team-mate David Campbell’s stag party, the home side fielded a mixture of first and second team players. Lochside led 4-0 at the interval thanks to doubles from Liam Higgins and Brian MacCallum. Willie Lafferty came on at half time for the visitors and he took the chance to impress by grabbing a hat-trick. Youngster Daniel MacVicar got the other to give new manager Gareth Evans an 8-0 win.
Beauly 0 Lochaber 3 Lochaber’s good start to the season continued as they followed up last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Fort William with a 3-0 win over Beauly in their 1pm throw up at Braeview Park. Beauly started with Jamie MacLennan at full back and Lochaber played with the wind at their backs in the first half. The visitors went ahead midway through the half thanks to a Kevin Ferguson strike and they took that lead into the break. MacKay Murray replaced Jamie MacLennan at the interval and Beauly, who now had the elements in their favour, came right back into the game. However Calum MacDonald was alert in the Lochaber goal and he made a couple of good saves to keep his side ahead. Lochaber doubled their advantage with just 10 minutes remaining and it was Shaun Nicholson who followed up last week’s hat-trick against Fort William with the vital strike. A first senior goal from Findlay MacDonald in injury time put gloss on the win for Ally Ferguson’s side in a match refereed by Evan MacRae.
Boleskine P Kingussie P The match between Boleskine and the Kingussie second team was postponed because of snow on the Smith Park pitch.
Caberfeidh 1 Kingussie 2 The Caberfeidh and Kingussie senior sides served up an entertaining match in their 2pm throw up at Castle Leod. New boss Lee Nicol took charge of Cabers whilst Davie Anderson was on the touchline for the Kings whilst Innes Wood was the man in the middle. Ally MacLennan netted for the home side but goals from Savio Genini and James Falconer gave Kingussie the 2-1 win.
Fort William 2 Lovat 2 It was honours even as Fort William and Lovat drew 2-2 in their 1pm throw up at An Aird. Both sides played open shinty from the throw up with the ball going from end-to-end. There was very little goalmouth action until Ryan Campbell forced a save from Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald on 8 minutes whilst just a minute later, home goalie Paul MacKay saved well from a Kevin Bartlett shot from the right. Fort William co-manager Adam Robertson was forced to make a change at the back on 10 minutes as Alexander Cameron replaced Stevie Stewart who seemed to be suffering from a hamstring problem. Fort William went in front on 19 minutes when Lovat failed to clear their lines following a corner on the right and Ewan Campbell drilled the ball into the net from 15 yards out on the right of the D. However the sides went into the break all-square when a long ball forward from Lorne MacKay on 37 minutes ended up in the Fort net off defender Sean Cameron with Greg Matheson close in attendance. Ryan Campbell put Fort William back in front within a minute of the restart. Fort fed the ball down the right wing and from near the side-line, Arran MacPhee spotted Ryan Campbell completely unmarked. A great cross from MacPhee left Campbell plenty time to advance with the ball and he scored from the edge of the D to make it 2-1. Lovat boss John MacRitchie made some positional changes and his side began to take the game to Fort William. Paul MacKay produced a great double save on 55 minutes; first from Jamie Matheson and with the ball falling to Lorne MacKay, his name-sake between the sticks saved again. Lovat levelled on the hour mark. Jamie Matheson collected the ball around 20 yards out from a Kevin Bartlett shy. Matheson had his back to goal but he showed good control before turning and his shot gave Paul MacKay no chance. Lorne MacKay had two attempts to score on 68 minutes. His first effort was saved by Paul MacKay and from the rebound; Lorne MacKay hit the post from wide on the right. Gordie MacKinnon must have thought he was going to get the winner 6 minutes from time. The ball fell to MacKinnon on the edge of the D and he tried to place it in the corner of the net. However Stuart MacDonald threw himself across goal to make an impressive save. It was Lovat’s turn to think they had a winner with just a minute remaining. Jamie Matheson and Greg Matheson combined to force the ball into the Fort net but the goal was chalked off by referee David Stafford for an infringement on the goal line.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 9 Glasgow University 0 The Glasgow Mid Argyll second team were 9-0 winners in their 11.45pm throw up against Glasgow University. Calum McLay was top scorer with four goals. Jack Berg and Lewis Miller each scored twice with Neil Beaton getting the other.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Kyles Athletic 4 Glasgow Mid Argyll have been one of the busiest sides this pre-season; and after matches against Aberdour, Kinlochshiel and Newtonmore, this was their fourth friendly match of the pre-season. Their latest opponents were Kyles Athletic as the sides met in a 1.30pm throw up at Peterson Park, Yoker. GMA took a first half lead when Scotland U21 cap Craig Anderson scored following a free-hit. However goals from Gordon Whyte and Matthew MacColl had Kyles 2-1 ahead at the break. Strikes from Dunkie Kerr and Roddy MacDonald sealed the 4-1 win.
Glenorchy P Bute P The noon throw up between the Glenorchy and Bute reserve sides was postponed as the Mart Park, Dalmally was water-logged.
Glenorchy P Bute P The senior 2pm meeting between Glenorchy and Bute also fell foul of an unplayable Mart Park.
Glenurquhart 5 Kilmallie 1 Glenurquhart were 5-1 winners over Kilmallie at Blairbeg. Goals from Neale Reid, Lewis MacLennan and Billy Urquhart saw the Glen lead 3-0 at the break. Arran MacDonald added a fourth in the second half and although Kilmallie captain Liam MacDonald pilled a goal back, James MacPherson rounded off the 5-1 win.
Inverness 7 Caithness 0 The Inverness second team beat Caithness 7-0 in their 1.30pm throw up at the Bught Park. Stuart MacRae scored four times for the home side with Scott Watson, Craig Girvan and Clive Girvan getting the others. Caithness have entered this year’s Strathdearn Cup competition and after getting a first round bye, they will host Beauly in the second. Inverness presented Caithness with an “In Friendship” plaque to mark the occasion.
Kilmallie P Lochaber P The reserve meeting between Kilmallie and Beauly at the Canal Parks was postponed.
Lochcarron P Lewis Camanachd P The Roddy Blind Cup clash between Lochcarron and Lewis Camanachd was postponed. This 12.30pm throw up was called off when Battery Park was deemed unplayable and the teams failed in their attempts to find an available pitch to host the match in the Inverness-shire area.
Oban Celtic 0 Inveraray 4 Inveraray beat Oban Celtic 4-0 in wintery conditions at Mossfield. The Inveraray scorers in this 1pm throw up were Euan McMurdo, Lewis MacNicol and a brace from Garry MacPherson.
Oban Lorn 5 Aberdour 1 The 2pm throw up between Oban Lorne and an Aberdour was switched from Mossfield to Ganavan. David Martin showed that he will be a key player for Oban Lorn this season by scoring all five of his team’s goals. The only down-side for Oban Lorne was an eye injury sustained by young defender Callum MacLeod.
North Skye P South Skye P The Annual Ewen Morrison Memorial Cup meeting between North Skye and South Skye was postponed because the Pairc nan Laoch pitch was ruled unplayable on Friday afternoon.
Strathspey Camanachd 0 Newtonmore 5 The Newtonmore second team beat Strathspey Camanachd 5-0 in their 1.30pm throw up at Grantown Grammar School. Iain Robinson helped himself to four of the Newtonmore goals with Neil Stewart getting the other. Strathspey battled well throughout the game with Mark MacDonald doing well against his former club. |
