Oban Camanachd will face Newtonmore in the 2016 Camanachd Cup Final, Newtonmore stay four points clear at the top of the Marine Harvest Premiership and Oban Celtic are just a point away from clinching the Marine Harvest South Division 1 title following the shinty action on Saturday 20 August 2016.
Camanachd Cup – Semi Final
Lochaber 2 Oban Camanachd 4
Oban Camanachd are through to the 2016 Camanachd Cup Final after they defeated Lochaber 4-2 in their action-packed semi-final at the Taynuilt Sports Field.
Lochaber’s Danny Delaney was free of suspension after he missed the previous weekend’s league win over Skye Camanachd. Manager Ally Ferguson left full centre Barry MacDonald on the bench as he’d been suffering from flu. Zandz Ferguson and Jack Dignan remained longer term absentees.
Oban Camanachd had a free weekend the previous Saturday after their clash with Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruaich was postponed because of an unplayable field. Defender Garry Lord was out as he served the third match of a four game ban so Willie Neilson continued in defence. Manager Iain Hay selected David Lafferty in attack with Malcolm Clark on the bench.
This 4.05pm throw up was broadcast live by BBC Alba and the Taynuilt pitch was in excellent condition.
Lochaber attacked from the throw up. Neil MacDonald played in Shaun Nicolson who broke down the left wing before checking back and Oban Camanachd full back Gary McKerracher did well to deflect Nicolson’s shot away for a corner.
It didn’t take Oban Camanachd long to go on the offensive and an Andrew MacCuish shot from the right went high into the side-netting.
Shaun Nicolson took down a long Kevin Ferguson ball from the left and he held off a challenge from Willie Neilson before fizzing a shot just wide.
However it was Oban Camanachd who took the lead seconds later. David Lafferty forced a corner on the Oban right which was taken by Scott MacMillan. The ball fell for Andrew MacCuish and his shot took a deflection off a Lochaber defender, wrong footing keeper Callum MacDonald, to give the Oban side a 1-0 lead with 8 minutes played.
Andrew MacCuish was proving to be a handful and the Lochaber defence scrambled away a Scott MacMillan free-hit from the right under pressure from McCuish.
The Lochaber support held their breath when a Callum MacDonald goal-hit went straight to Daniel MacVicar but the goalie redeemed himself; saving with his legs.
Lochaber equalised on 18 minutes. Shaun Nicolson took a quick free-hit from wide on the right. He picked out Ben Delaney who had his back to goal. Delaney made just enough space to turn and he beat the keeper on his left side with a powerful drive to make it 1-1.
Oban Camanachd’s response was instant though and Andrew MacCuish took down a Lorne Dickie cross from the right and he squeezed the ball past the keeper from inside the D to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes on the clock.
Shaun Nicolson shot over following a free-hit midway through the first half and then, at the other end, Callum MacDonald saved with his feet from Daniel Cameron before the keeper again denied the same player from the resultant corner.
A superb turn from Andrew MacCuish created a shooting chance but Lachie Campbell just managed to deflect the ball away for a corner.
Play quickly switched to the other end and Lochaber had a chance to equalise on 29 minutes. Neil MacDonald collected an attempted clearance on the Oban right and he juggled the ball on his caman and burst into the D where he went down under a challenge from Willie Neilson. Referee Lachie Wood pointed to the spot after consulting with goal judge Graham Irving. However Gavin Stobbart reacted quickly to save Ben Delaney’s low spot-hit with his feet.
Lochaber continued to press and Shaun Nicolson came close to a leveller with a shot from the right following a Brennan MacDonald shy from the same side.
The Lochaber goal some-how survived on 37 minutes when Daniel MacVicar saw his initial shot saved by a diving Callum MacDonald and although MacVicar got onto the rebound; his effort came off the post before being eventually scrambled away.
Oban Camanachd finished the half on the attack and they took their 2-1 lead into the break.
Oban Camanachd were first to threaten in the second half and a low drive from Andrew MacCuish was saved with his feet by Callum MacDonald.
Oban Camanachd extended their lead on 48 minutes. This time Andrew MacCuish turned provider as he picked up possession on the left and played a great cross to the edge of the D where Daniel MacVicar allowed the ball to run across his body before slamming in past a helpless Callum MacDonald to make it 3-1.
Callum MacDonald did well to first palm down and then clear a long ball from Scott MacMillan with Daniel MacVicar looking to pounce on any error.
Lochaber made a double-switch on 54 minutes as they tried to win back the midfield area. Barry MacDonald and Stuart Callison came on for Brennan MacDonald and Pat Toal.
The Mossfield men had one foot in the final on 57 minutes when they made it 4-1. Andrew MacCuish found Daniel MacVicar down the Oban left. Lachie Campbell slipped and MacVicar darted away and he found Daniel Cameron. There seemed little danger as Cameron went for goal but back-hand shot sneaked past Callum MacDonald at his left post.
As the tie approached the hour mark, there was a booking for Aiden McIntyre for kicking out at Barry MacDonald.
Lochaber reintroduced Pat Toal for Kevin Ferguson on 61 minutes. Ferguson had to come off after taking a blow to the face which left him with a cut cheek.
Lochaber showed that they weren’t going down without a fight as they made it 4-2 on 66 minutes. A great Neil MacDonald run from the left saw him flick the ball past an advancing Gavin Stobbart and the ball came back off the post but Ben Delaney bundled the rebound over the line for his second goal of the afternoon.
Oban Camanachd made their first change as Malcolm Clark took over from Scott MacMillan on 68 minutes.
Lochaber went on to have a period of pressure without overly troubling Gavin Stobbart in the Oban goal and when Oban returned on the attack, they looked to feed the ball to Daniel MacVicar at every opportunity.
Iain MacMillan was introduced in place of Willie Neilson with 13 minutes remaining.
Andrew MacCuish came close to completing his hat-trick when Daniel MacVicar flicked a ball from the right into his path but his shot was deflected for a corner.
Both teams made changes as Kevin Ferguson came back on for Pat Toal and Robert Alexander took over from Aidan MacIntyre and then Danny Delaney replaced Neil MacDonald as the tie moved into the closing stages.
Oban Camanachd were seeing out the closing stages and, with 3 minutes remaining, Barry MacDonald was yellow-carded for a challenge on Andrew MacCuish.
A searing strike from substitute Robert Alexander rose over the ball following an Oban corner on the left.
Gavin Stobbart had to race from his goal in stoppage time to get to a Shaun Nicolson through ball ahead of Ben Delaney.
Scott MacMillan came on for Daniel Lafferty as Oban Camanachd defended a late free-hit which was cleared thanks to a superb Gary McKerracher tackle.
It was the final incident of a thoroughly entertaining contest and it is Oban Camanachd who are through to their first Camanachd Cup Final since 2001, a competition they last won in 1996, and they will play Newtonmore at An Aird on Saturday 17 September 2016 for shinty’s biggest prize. The sides have yet to meet this season with their league encounters likely to take place after the final.
Andrew MacCuish was named BBC Alba man of the match by shinty pundit Gary Innes.
Marine Harvest Premiership
Newtonmore 6 Fort William 0
It was top versus bottom at the Eilan as Newtonmore beat Fort William 6-0.
Conor Jones gave Newtonmore the lead on the half hour mark with the only goal of the first half.
Jamie Robinson on 53 minutes and Neil Stewart a couple of minutes later made it 3-0 whilst a Norman Campbell double on 68 and 89 minutes gave the champions their eleventh win in twelve league fixtures.
It was a result which officially relegates Fort William to the Marine Harvest National Division next season.
Kinlochshiel 3 Glenurquhart 0
Kinlochshiel warmed up nicely for their forth-coming Artemis MacAulay Cup Final appearance with a 3-0 win over Glenurquhart at Kirkton.
Kinlochshiel were without defender Conor Cormack who suffered a serious hand injury in the Camanachd Cup semi-final against Newtonmore a week earlier. John MacRae and Mark MacDonald were rested as both were just a booking away from missing the cup final showdown against Inveraray although MacRae did start on the bench. Calum MacLean and Finlay MacRae started in defence with Alasdair Nixon and Duncan “DA” MacRae starting in attack.
Glenurquhart had Fraser Heath and James Hurwood still out whilst Arran MacDonald was also missing. John Barr was a late call-off after he missed a connecting flight from Houston. David Smart was sidelined with a knee injury picked up in the team’s last outing; a 1-1 draw against Skye at Blairbeg. Lewis MacLennan has relocated to the Isle of Muck where he has taken up a job as gamekeeper. Michael Fraser returned whilst there were also starting places for Andrew Corrigan, Michael Brady, Billy Urquhart and Eddie Tembo.
‘Shiel started well and they put the Glen defence into a lot of pressure and keeper Stuart MacKintosh pulled off early saves from Keith MacRae and Oliver MacRae.
Keith MacRae put ‘Shiel ahead on 24 minutes when he finished off a well-worked move from the left. Gordie MacDonald played a quality chip over the Glen defence and MacRae was on hand to send the ball past the helpless keeper from 15 yards out.
Kinlochshiel went 2-0 ahead on 40 minutes. Duncan “DA” MacRae darted out to the left touchline where he managed to square the ball back to Keith MacRae and he smashed a shot over the keeper’s head and into the net.
‘Shiel made the stronger start to the second half and they hounded the Glen defence with wave upon wave of attacks. They extended their lead on 56 minutes when Jordan Fraser sent 20 yard piledriver past a helpless Stuart MacKintosh to make it 3-0.
Stuart Mackintosh saved a number of shots to prevent the west coast side adding to their lead.
Referee John Angus Gilles awarded Glenurquhart a penalty 10 minutes from time with Calum MacLean penalised for pushing Andrew Corrigan in the back. Andrew Corrigan looked set to take the spot-hit but Stuart MacKintosh ran from his goals to take it instead. MacKintosh struck the ball well enough but it was straight at keeper Scott Kennedy who chested the ball down before clearing it up the park. Stuart MacKintosh raced back to his goal and he was relieved to see an Alasdair Nixon shot just go by his right hand post.
Scott Kennedy saved a deflected Neale Reid effort 5 minutes from time, preserving another clean sheet for the ‘Shiel veteran.
Young WD MacRae came on for the home side during the closing stages and he proved to be a handful for the Glen defence.
‘Shiel played well in all areas of the park but Donald Nixon was commanding at full centre whilst Oliver MacRae worked tirelessly up front and he had a hard but fair tussle with Glen’s buckshee back Connor Golabek.
This was a very entertaining game with no bookings and the win lifts Kinlochshiel into second place in the league, ahead of Oban Camanachd on goal difference although the Kirkton side have played a game more.
Lovat 3 Skye Camanachd 1
Two late goals from Greg Matheson and Euan Ferguson gave Lovat a 3-1 win over Skye Camanachd at Balgate.
Lovat were without twins Craig Mainland and Martin Mainland but Ryan Ferguson returned after missing the defeat to Kyles in his team’s last outing. Drew Howie also made a welcome return after a period out through injury and he started at full back with Daniel Grieve going to buckshee back. Lorne MacKay was also back and he started on the bench.
Skye had brothers Steven Morrison and Danny Morrison back in the side after both missed the 2-1 defeat to Lochaber the previous Saturday.
Lovat started brightly on a sunny afternoon with Greg Matheson firing past the post in the opening minute.
Skye keeper Jamie Gannon made some great first half saves with one stop with his caman from an 18 minute Greg Matheson shot particularly catching the eye.
Midway through the first half, Skye forward Iain Nicolson forced a good save from Stuart MacDonald in the Lovat goal.
The first half action was mainly at the other end though with Jamie Gannon in top form.
As the first half drew to a close, a Kenny Campbell ball rolled along the face of the Lovat goal and was eventually cleared.
Skye had the ball in the net on 50 minutes when Kenny Campbell pushed forward to score only for referee Graham Cameron to rule out the effort as he had blown for an earlier infringement on a Skye player.
Skye lost Kenny Campbell with a nasty looking eye injury after he’d taken the full force of the ball from close-range. He was replaced by Iain Murray.
Lovat took the lead on 69 minutes when Graeme MacMillan was first onto a rebound after Gannon had made another save.
Skye responded well and they equalised on 77 minutes. Will Cowie's initial shot was saved by Stuart MacDonald but Cowie manage to retrieve the rebound and fire low into the bottom corner of the net to make it 1-1.
Lovat regained the lead on 81 minutes when Greg Matheson capitalised on a slip in the Skye defence and he made no mistake, scoring to make it 2-1.
Skye made positional changes in an attempt to draw level for a second time with Steven Morrison joining the attack, Will Cowie going to full centre and Neil MacVicar going to full back.
A Jordan Murchison rocket from 20 yards out went narrowly wide on 84 minutes.
With Skye pressing, Lovat broke away and, in the final minute, Euan Ferguson was afforded too much time and space at the edge of the D and he scored at the second attempt. Keeper Gannon got his foot to the ball but it spun into the net to make it 3-1.
Callum Cruden was the pick of the Lovat players, turning in a very good performance at full centre. Defender John Gillies had an excellent game for Skye against the lively Kevin Bartlett but some terrific goalkeeping from Jamie Gannon made him the obvious man of the match.
Kingussie 2 Kyles Athletic 4
Three goals in the final 15 minutes gave Kyles Athletic a 4-2 win over Kingussie at the Dell.
Callum Miller was the unlikely scorer of Kyles opening goal on 18 minutes.
However two goals from two youngsters either side of the break put the Kings in front. Roddy Young made it 1-1 on 37 minutes with James Falconer giving them the lead a couple of minutes after the restart.
Kyles’ talisman Roddy MacDonald made it 2-2 with 15 minutes remaining to set up an exciting.
Kyles won the day though as Scott MacDonald on 81 minutes and Sandy MacKenzie on 87 minutes made it 4-2 and the Tighnabruaich side stay fourth in shinty’s top division.
Marine Harvest National Division 1

David Robertson was back in the side. Douglas Dando and Nicolas Crawford also returned although they started on the bench alongside player / manager Ruaridh Graham but all were given a good run out. Inveraray U17 player Robert Wood was given a start in defence; gaining some valuable experience.
Eoin Fyfe missed out for Ballachulish as he served a one match ban for his sending off against Inverness in Balla’s last game. John MacDonald started at full centre although he did move to full forward later in the match.
Grant Griffin gave Inveraray the lead in the opening minute and they never looked back. David Robertson doubled their advantage on 12 minutes and a Lewis Montgomery goal on 20 minutes made it 3-0 at the break.
A second from Grant Griffin a couple of minutes after the restart and a Lewis MacNicol effort 10 minutes from time completed the 5-0 win.
Inveraray lost Ally MacDonald to an eye injury which later required nine stitches.
Alan Clark had a fine game at full back for Balla’ and, not for the first time, Scotland U17 keeper Cameron Sutherland made some great saves in the visiting goal.
There were no bookings in a match which was well policed by veteran referee Ronnie Campbell.
Bute 1 Beauly 1
Bute and Beauly shared the points in 1-1 draw at the Meadows.
Ryan MacKay and Jack MacDonald were free to play for Beauly but both will miss the team’s trip to Glasgow to play GMA at the start of September through suspension.
Ben Clarke gave Bute the lead after just 5 minutes. Clarke fought to win possession before hitting a quick shot into the top corner of the net, catching the keeper off-guard, for what was a superb goal.
However Beauly levelled 15 minutes from time when Conor Ross scored to ensure they returned home with a point. It was another well-taken goal, hit on the half volley through a crowded D into the corner of the net. The keeper got a hand to the ball but was beaten by the power of the shot.
Caberfeidh 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0
Glasgow Mid Argyll and Caberfeidh couldn’t be separated, drawing 0-0 at Castle Leod.
Mark Bain was banned for the visitors and Finlay MacMillan will miss their next match, against Beauly, through suspension.
There were few real chances in this game. Cabers’ full centre Craig Morrison was the pick of the players on show, controlling the match for spells.
This was GMA’s game in hand on league leaders Kilmallie who top the table by a point. Both teams have four matches remaining including a meeting at Yoker next month. Third place Inveraray are only behind GMA on goal difference although they only have two fixtures remaining. Cabers are three points off top spot with three games to go whilst Beauly are four points off the summit with four games to go.

Skye Camanachd 4 Kinlochshiel 2
The Skye Camanachd seconds beat the Kinlochshiel seconds 4-2 in their derby meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.
A James Pringle goal on the half hour mark gave Skye the lead. The goal involved the three Skye youngsters in attack as Ruaraidh MacLeod released Ross Gordon down the Skye right. James Pringle allowed Gordon’s cross to run across his body before thumping the ball into the net.

Goals from Alister Shaw on 65 minutes and Roddy MacColl on 80 minutes cut the deficit but a second strike from Iain MacKechnie just 4 minutes from time sealed the 7-2 win.
The victory means Oban Celtic have all but clinched the Marine Harvest South Division 1 title and promotion to shinty’s Marine Harvest National Division. Oban Celtic and Aberdour each have two matches remaining. Aberdour can still equal Oban Celtic’s current nineteen point tally if they win both their remaining fixtures. However Celtic have a much better goal difference and a point form their last two games – away to the Kyles Athletic second team on Saturday 10 September and at home to the same opponents a fortnight later - will guarantee the title in Kenny Wotherspoon’s first season in charge.

Strathspey had another first half effort ruled out for offside but the home side pressed hard after the break with Kenny Murray and Scott MacLeod threatening the Strathspey goal.
This was a sometimes tousy affair and although Will Church came close to giving Lewis a leveller, Strathspey took the points which lift them a place above Lewis in the league.
Inverness 1 Boleskine 2
Boleskine beat the Inverness second team 2-1 at the Bught Park.
Boleskine had the wind advantage in the first half and Jamie Matheson on 24 minutes and Jimmy MacKenzie on 36 minutes gave them a two goal lead.
Ewen MacKinnon, a Camanachd Cup winner with Skye Camanachd in 1990, pulled a goal back shortly after and although Inverness, with Ruairidh MacKay shining at buckshee back and Matthew Ross doing like-wise at full centre, tried hard for a second half leveller, Boleskine took the points.
Lochaber v Glengarry W/O
