Lovat’s Martin Mainland was out with a hand injury suffered during the previous week’s win against Beauly. Lovat took a grip of the match when Fraser Heath scored twice in 3 minutes. On 34 minutes, Lovat defender Scott MacKenzie drove the ball down the left to Marc MacLachlan. He played the ball inside to Greg Matheson who quickly switched possession to Fraser Heath on the right. Heath controlled the ball before firing low across keeper Iain McCall, beating him on his right side. Just a couple of minutes later, another long Scott MacKenzie ball set Fraser Heath racing down the inside left channel. Heath cleverly cut the ball back to make just enough space to shoot over the keeper and into the net to make it 2-0. Greg Matheson made it 3-0 on 58 minutes following a great passing move. Again the move started with a Scott MacKenzie ball forward, this time down the right. Greg Matheson won a challenge before spreading the ball to Fraser Heath wide on the right. His touch released Lorne MacKay who ran towards the D before cutting the ball back to Greg Matheson around the penalty spot and he hammered the ball home to the keeper’s left. It was a tidy finish under pressure and one which won his side a trip to play Kyles Athletic in the next round.

Mowi Senior League C Inveraray 2 Oban Celtic 1 Inveraray came from behind to beat Oban Celtic 2-1 in their rescheduled league match at the Winterton on Tuesday 15 June 2021. A mixture of drizzle and midges greeted the teams for this 7pm throw up. Oban Celtic travelled without keeper Allan Duncan who was working so Jack Hill played in goal where he made some good saves. Ross MacMillan made his first appearance of the season but Craig MacMillan looks like he will be out for around 4 weeks. David Hill lined up at full forward as he was carrying a knock with Lennon Campbell going to half forward. Oban Celtic’s John Douglas was another who started the match with an injury and he went over his problem ankle after just 7 minutes and had to be replaced. A reshuffle followed which included Keegan McPhee coming on at full back and George MacMillan once more switching from the wing to half back where he had another good game, giving the management team some food for thought. Lennon Campbell gave Oban Celtic the lead on 15 minutes when he gathered Andy MacDonald’s cross before turning his man and rifling the ball home. Celtic suffered a blow soon after when scorer Lennon Campbell pulled up with a calf injury. Another reshuffle ensued with 16 year old William MacEwan, who usually plays wing forward, going onto the wing where he had an excellent game. Coll MacKay drew Inveraray level on the half-hour with a 30 yard shot on the angle which took a bobble before beating the keeper just inside the post. There were chances at both ends, including opportunities for Celtic forwards Ross MacMillan and David Hill, before referee Lachie Wood brought the first half to a close with the teams on level terms. Inveraray took the lead on 65 minutes when Fraser Watt darted in to beat the offside trap as he ran onto a long ball from the left before slipping the ball past the keeper. David Hill had a chance to level but was foiled. Inveraray manager Ruairidh Graham will be delighted to take both points but concerned about a hand injury suffered by Lewis Montgomery, leading to his substitution late in the game. There were several pluses for Oban Celtic, especially the performances of William MacEwan and Keegan McPhee, both playing in unfamiliar positions.

Mowi South League B Kyles Athletic 5 Aberdour 1 The match between the Aberdour second team and the Kyles Athletic second team was reversed from Silversands to the Playing Field. On a very hot day at picturesque Tighnabruaich, the home side took an early lead when Cairn Limbert’s low shot deceived Sean Burns, who returned to the Aberdour squad and stepped in as keeper. However Burns went on to have a fine game in his new position. Luke Thornton made it 2-0 on 19 minutes but the visiting defence worked tirelessly to prevent Kyles increasing their lead before the break. Aberdour’s Tom Aitchison and Kyles Athletic’s Innes MacDonald were having a great tussle in the full centre positions and whilst Kyles had most of the possession, Aberdour also created opportunities. The heat was taking its toll and Kyles had the advantage of having more substitutes available as Aberdour had suffered a couple of late call-offs. Luke Thornton got his second on the hour whilst Stewart Taylor on 75 minutes and Innes MacDonald on 85 minutes made it 5-0. Aberdour had the final say though as a determined Tom Aitchison run forward from midfield saw an exchange of passes before the ball was returned to Aitchison outside the D at a wide angle and he hammered the ball home, giving the keeper no chance, to make it 5-1.
