16 April 2023 The cottages.com MacTavish Cup and Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup semi-finalists are known following the shinty action on Saturday 15 April 2023.
cottages.com MacTavish Cup – Quarter-Finals Lovat 0 Kingussie 3 Holders Kingussie are through to the cottages.com MacTavish Cup semi-finals after beating Lovat 3-0 at Balgate. Sam Stubbs has rejoined Lovat after a brief spell with Skye however he was ineligible for this tie as he played for Skye against Fort William in the previous round, scoring the winner in the process. Callum Cruden was at full centre for Lovat, flanked by Graeme MacMillan and Lewis Tawse and they lined up against a Kingussie midfield trio of centre Alexander Michie with Liam Borthwick and Fraser Munro on the wings. Ruaridh Anderson recovered from a knee problem to play and Calum Grant and Alexander Michie both came into the starting line-up but Lee Bain was ruled out with a hamstring injury. Kingussie got off to a flier when Ruaridh Anderson put them ahead with just over a minute played. Anderson, with his back to goal, allowed Fraser Munro’s long hit-in from the left to run across his body before striking the ball on the turn and beating Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald from 20 yards out. Roddy Young then made a great run down the left, evading a couple of challenges, but as he cut into the D, Stuart MacDonald came off his line to block the effort. Lovat attacks were rare although Kingussie keeper Rory McGregor smartly swept away Greg Matheson’s backhand effort following Callum Cruden’s free-hit from inside his own half. Kingussie went close again early in the second half. Ruaridh Anderson started the move as he found Liam Borthwick who played the ball forward to James Falconer. When Falconer’s strike was deflected to Ruaridh Anderson, he fired a net-bound shot on his backhand. Stuart MacDonald stretched his left foot to save and although Anderson took the rebound in the air, he sent it wide. However, the second goal did arrive a couple of minutes after the hour. Kieran Macpherson played a high ball down the left and when substitute James Hutchison played the ball into the front of the D, James Falconer deflected it over Danny Kelly and Roddy Young was first to it, finishing well, low across the keeper, from the right of the D. There was only going to be one winner and, with a couple of minutes remaining, Ruaridh Anderson iced the cake with the goal of the game. Substitute Iain Fraser played on Robert Mabon’s clearance out of defence to James Hutchison who found Roddy Young in a central position. Young’s clever reverse pass played in Ruaridh Anderson on the left and he showed great stick-work to bamboozle Danny Kelly before producing a brilliant finish as he crashed the ball high into the net on his backhand.
Lochaber 1 Newtonmore 4 Newtonmore came from a goal down to beat Lochaber 4-1 at Spean Bridge. Lochaber’s Danny Delaney completed his two-match suspension whilst Fraser MacKintosh returned to the Newtonmore squad to take a place on the bench. Declan Brannan was still missing and with skipper Conor Jones unavailable and Craig Ritchie suffering a calf injury, Ritchie Irvine started in defence. Lochaber stunned their opponents when Duncan MacKinnon punished a defensive lapse to score on 10 minutes. Struan Ross pulled ‘More level on 24 minutes with a wonderful strike from more than 25 yards out which gave the keeper no chance. Newtonmore created many chances in the game but Calum MacDonald in the home goal made some good saves and Jack Dignan was very effective at full back. It wasn’t until 74 minutes when the visitors took the lead. Michael Russell got the goal, pushing the ball past the keeper from inside the D. Fraser MacKintosh went close on a couple of occasions before he made it 3-1 on 82 minutes with a 15 yard drive into the corner of the goal. Struan Ross got his second with a couple of minutes remaining, scoring from inside the D.
Beauly 1 Skye Camanachd 5 A powerful second half performance saw Skye Camanachd beat Beauly 5-1 in their 3pm throw up at Braeview Park. These sides were promoted from the Mowi National Division at the end of last season and Beauly’s Ryan MacKay was restricted to a place on the bench through injury. Skye were still without Neil MacVicar so Ross MacKinnon continued at full centre but Martin Pringle returned. Skye started really well and they took the lead after just 4 minutes with a well worked goal. Kenny Cushnie found Ruaraidh MacLeod on the left and he sent a clever ball across the box. Jordan Murchison just failed to get his stick to it and whilst a home defender made a half-clearance, the ball fell to Ross Gordon around 18 yards out and he slammed a shot inside keeper Lee Dunbar’s right post. Skye pushed for a second and they went close on two occasions with Ross Gordon turning his marker and shooting past the post each time. Jordan Murchison tried his luck with a nice back-hand strike from 15 yards, but goalie Dunbar saved before clearing the ball to safety. Beauly began to push for a goal and they were rewarded on 18 minutes when the Skye defence failed to clear their lines and when the ball was deflected to Robbie Brindle, he fired a shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards out. The goal lifted Beauly and they went on the enjoy a period of pressure but the Skye defence stayed strong, closing down any attempts on goal. Beauly began to get frustrated and Euan McCormick was shown a yellow card by referee Iain Kennedy for a late challenge on John Gillies. Both teams would have been content to go into the break on level terms, and Skye made changes with James Pringle replacing Jamie Gillies and Ross Gordon dropping back to take over from Ross MacKinnon at full centre where he settled in well, spreading the ball to all the forwards. Jordan Murchison and Ruaraidh MacLeod combined to great effect on 53 minutes as a lovely back-hand flick from Murchison found MacLeod outside the D and he slammed the ball home to put Skye back in front. No sooner had play restarted than Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod floated a great ball to Ruaraidh MacLeod on the right and he went past a defender before drilling a shot inside the keeper’s right hand post to make it 3-1 with 55 minutes gone. Jordan Murchison was unlucky not to add his name to the scoresheet, thwarted by a couple of sublime Lee Dunbar saves. The Skye defence soaked up everything that came their way with full back John Gillies keeping a steady ship, supported well by James Morrison, Sam Macphee and William MacKinnon. Ruaraidh MacLeod completed his hat-trick on 65 minutes; his third hat-trick of the season following a couple of trebles for the second team. James Pringle and Jordan Murchison exchanged passes and Murchison picked out Ruaraidh MacLeod outside the D and he tucked the ball home to make it 4-1. Jordan Murchison got the goal he deserved on 78 minutes. Ross Gordon found James Pringle on the left and he squared the ball to Jordan Murchison who took it first time, beating the keeper at his right post to make it 5-1. James Pringle was caught by a late challenge as he crossed the ball for the goal and despite wearing a helmet, he suffered a nasty gash to his head. Beauly almost scored at the death when Robbie Brindle turned James Morrison before firing a low shot to the keeper’s right, but Murphy Henderson pulled off an amazing save with his right foot. This was a very good Skye performance and Ruaraidh MacLeod’s hat-trick earned him the man of the match accolade. Colin MacDonald was best for Beauly. The sides meet again this coming Saturday, this time in Portree in the Mowi Premiership.

Fort William were using the combination of full forward Graham Campbell with Victor Smith playing just off him to good effect and it was Victor Smith again with a good finish on 11 minutes. Kilmallie came back into it though and Calum MacDougall halved the deficit on 33 minutes, finishing well from a tight angle following a goalmouth scramble. Kilmallie went on to have the better of the remainder of the first half but they couldn’t find an equaliser before half-time. The second half was just a couple of minutes old when Calum Shepherd made a long run from wing centre to the back post and he trundled the ball over the line to restore the Fort’s two-goal cushion. Victor Smith sealed victory on 78 minutes, completing his hat-trick in style to make it 4-1.
