The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 11 May 2019 | |
12 May 2019 Kingussie take pole position in the Mowi Premiership whilst Beauly, Fort William, Oban Celtic and Skye Camanachd made progress and Glasgow Mid Argyll and Bute will replay in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup on Saturday 11 May 2019.
Mowi Premiership Oban Camanachd 4 Caberfeidh 3 Oban Camanachd notched their second league win of the season, eventually seeing off Caberfeidh 4-3 at Mossfield. Oban Camanachd had Gary McKerracher free of suspension and Aidan MacIntyre was back in the squad. There was also a place for youngster Blair MacFarlane who has joined the club from Taynuilt. However Garry Lord was missing. This was a game of two halves with the hosts dominating the first 45 minutes. Daniel Cameron broke the deadlock on 26 minutes. Keith MacMillan launched a hit-in from the hill-side and Daniel Cameron faked to shoot with his right side before turning to his left to score at the Golf course end. Oban Camanachd added a second on 37 minutes. Andrew MacCuish played the ball from wide to Daniel MacCuish who ran on before whipping the ball home. Daniel MacCuish got his second and Oban Camanachd’s third with a fine individual effort a couple of minutes before the break. MacCuish went on a mazy run from midfield before slotting the ball past the advancing keeper and the hosts looked good for both points. However Caberfeidh brought Kevin Bartlett back to full centre from the start of the second half which gave them more impetuous and they scored two quick goals to get right back into the contest as Robbie Brindle on 48 minutes and Craig Morrison on 51 minutes made it 3-2. Oban Camanachd needed a response and Andrew MacCuish scored what was to prove to be the game’s decisive goal on 53 minutes. MacCuish’s knee-high shot from the right beat the keeper on his left side. However Cabers were not for conceding the match and, on 63 minutes, Kenneth MacKenzie rocketed a powerful shot through an attempted blocking challenge to make it 4-3. Oban Camanachd gave a debut to Blair MacFarlane with around 15 minutes remaining. He came on in place of Scott MacMillan, taking up the half forward position with Daniel MacCuish going onto the wing. A tense closing period followed but Oban Camanachd went on to claim the win. Oban Camanachd remain in sixth place in the league whilst Cabers remain in the relegation zone although they do have games in hand on the teams above them.
Lovat 2 Kyles Athletic 3 Kyles Athletic maintained their unbeaten run in shinty’s top flight by twice coming from behind to beat previous league leaders Lovat 3-2 at Balgate. Lovat were missing Lorne MacKay, Calum MacAulay and Graeme MacMillan. Fraser Heath went to full centre and there was a start for Thomas Fraser in attack. Kyles were without full back Callum Miller whilst Paul MacArthur served a one-match suspension. George Thomson came in at wing centre with Scott MacDonald playing in defence whilst there was also a surprise start for Grant Irvine. There was an intense opening to the match and although you could sense Kyles were very much up for the game, it was first blood to Lovat. Thomas Fraser’s sweet strike on 10 minutes cracked back off the crossbar and Greg Matheson was quickly in to turn home the rebound. The game then flowed from end-to-end with both defences on top. Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald had to act quickly on 32 minutes as he threw himself towards a Thomas Whyte shot which he must have seen late. Kyles drew level just 4 minutes before the break. A high ball from Robbie MacLeod went over the Lovat defence and Grant Irvine ran forward and stretched high to take the ball down with his club before scoring. Lovat’s Greg Matheson had a half-chance late in the half but the sides went into the break on level terms. Kyles Athletic keeper John Whyte had to come quickly off his line on 55 minutes to foil Marc MacLachlan who was through one-on-one. Lovat regained the lead on 66 minutes. Duncan Davidson’s hit-in from the right dropped into the danger-area. John Whyte came off his line but missed the ball leaving Lewis Tawse to tap home on the angle from just a yard out. The Tighnabruaich men levelled for a second time on 69 minutes. Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald came off his line to meet a Thomas Whyte shot but the ball deflected off a caman and into the net to make it 2-2. Lovat pushed Fraser Heath up front whilst Kyles replaced Innes Macdonald with Rupert Williamson, who had been limited to a place on the bench because of a niggling injury. Kyles’ Conor Kennedy saw a strike well saved by Stuart MacDonald as the Tighnabruaich men began to dominate the closing stages. At the other end, Callum Cruden’s long-range effort was slapped away by John Whyte. The winning goal came with 8 minutes remaining and, when a ball from the corner wasn’t cleared by the Lovat defence, Robbie MacLeod was on hand to score. Kyles were worthy winners and they are in third place, three points off the top of the table, with three games in hand on league leaders Kingussie. Martin Mainland was Lovat’s top performer whilst full centres Fraser Heath and Thomas Whyte had a great battle. Roddy Macdonald in the full back position was best for Kyles with Andrew King also catching the eye. Grant Irvine collected the man of the match accolade.
Kingussie 4 Kilmallie 1 Kingussie took advantage of Lovat’s defeat as they beat Kilmallie 4-1 at the Dell to return to the top of the table. Kingussie took the lead when Savio Genini played in a ball from out wide and James Falconer ran to the front post where he stopped the ball with his feet and turned onto his back-hand before lashing the ball into the top corner of the net. Kilmallie came back into it though and Innes Blackhall scored to make it 1-1 at half-time. However Kingussie’s forward play really clicked in the second half and Roddy Young put them back in front. Savio Genini’s effort was going wide before Young prevented the ball going out and he turned his man before driving the ball into the into the bottom corner of the goal. Ruaridh Anderson then made it 3-1. The ball was taken down the right side by Ryan MacWilliam who dribbled before squaring to James Falconer who got in front of his marker. Falconer took a heavy touch and Ruaridh Anderson’s marker ran towards the ball and collided with Falconer. The ball broke to Anderson near the penalty spot where he hit it on his back-hand into the roof of the net, above the keeper. Savio Genini put the result beyond doubt when the ball dropped to him on the edge of the box and his fore-hand on the turn went into the top left corner of the net to make it 4-1. The Kings are now two points ahead of second placed Lovat at the top of the table.
Kinlochshiel 8 Lochaber 2 Kinlochshiel turned in a devastating first half performance to beat Lochaber 8-2 at Kirkton. Kinlochshiel were missing Jordan Fraser but Duncan Matheson and keeper Stuart MacRae both returned to the starting line-up. Finlay MacRae was still out but is nearing a return from injury. Lochaber’s Barry MacDonald was still sidelined with a broken finger whilst Martin Johnstone was a late call-off. However Shaun Nicolson returned to the starting line-up following his ankle injury. ‘Shiel started the match playing up the slope and they went in front within 30 seconds of the throw up. Donald Nixon won the centre and John MacRae found Duncan Matheson on the right and his lofted pass picked out Ali Nixon at the back post. Nixon first chested the ball down and then slipped it past keeper Callum MacDonald from close range. ‘Shiel’s John MacRae looks to have put his hamstring problems behind him and he made it 2-0 on 15 minutes. Iain Fyfe was penalised for heading the ball on the right outside the D. Duncan Matheson played the free-hit inside and John MacRae ran after it, tucking a shot inside the post, low past the keeper out-stretched right foot. Stuart Callison gave Lochaber hope when he pulled a goal back on 19 minutes. Ben Delaney picked out Callison in space on the Lochaber right and he drove the ball high over the keeper to make it 2-1. The hosts went back on the attack though and Conor Cormack’s long ball into the heart of the Lochaber defence on 21 minutes was knocked down by John MacRae to Duncan Matheson who was 22 yards out, left of centre, and Matheson shot through a cluster of players, beating the keeper on his right side. Seconds later, Duncan Matheson forced a Callum MacDonald save with his legs after breaking down the right and Keith MacRae sent the rebound just wide. Lochaber made a change as Chris MacRae took over from Alistair MacDonald in defence, picking up Duncan Matheson. The flow of play continued towards the Lochaber goal and Keith MacRae added a fourth on 24 minutes. Duncan “DA” MacRae’s lofted ball forward from a central position spun to the right and Keith MacRae produced a spectacular finish as he took the ball on the volley, hammering a shot across the keeper with the ball going in off both the far post and then the near post. Lochaber keeper Callum MacDonald needed treatment after halting ‘Shiel’s Duncan Matheson at the edge of the D with the players colliding but he was able to continue. John MacRae got his second with a shot out of nothing on 35 minutes with his strike from the right going across the keeper and in off the post. John MacRae completed his hat-trick after some great one-touch shinty just a minute later. This time John MacRae took Ali Nixon’s pass and exchanged passes with Keith MacRae, cutting open the visiting defence, and MacRae controlled the ball on the forehand before flicking home with his back-hand to make it 6-1. Lochaber swapped full forward Shaun Nicolson and full centre Ben Delaney. There was still no respite for Lochaber though as John MacRae got his fourth with the last hit of the first half. Donald Nixon’s ball forward deflected to Keith MacRae and he found John MacRae in space with a reverse pass and, from the edge of the D, he blasted an unsaveable shot over the keeper’s left shoulder to make it 7-1 at half-time. ‘Shiel brought Colin MacDiarmid on for Duncan “DA” MacRae in midfield from the restart. Lochaber rallied in the second half and Findlay MacDonald shot into the side-netting with the first attempt of the second half. Lochaber introduced Danny Delaney for Max Campbell soon after with Scott MacLean on for the hosts instead of John MacRae. Lochaber pulled a goal back on 57 minutes. Colin MacDiarmid was penalised for a challenge on Ben Delaney. Delaney’s free-hit was knocked down but not cleared by the home defence and Findlay MacDonald scored to make it 7-2. The referee awarded the goal after consulting the goal judge with claims for offside. Veteran Lachlan Campbell came off the Lochaber bench for Ryan Johnstone and John MacRae was reintroduced in favour of Scott MacLean. With the excellent Donald Nixon controlling the match from the middle of the park, Kinlochshiel had the final say as Keith MacRae thumped a 79 minutes shot from the right high into the net. Donald Nixon collected a clearance out of the Lochaber defence and he surged forward, beating two players before finding John MacRae who pushed the ball on to Keith MacRae and he finished well. Callum MacDonald did well to race from his line to thwart John MacRae who cut in from the left and the ‘Shiel had to settle for a corner. There were a couple of second half flashpoints which were well dealt with by referee Andy MacLean and he awarded the visitors a late penalty, penalising Paul MacRae for a challenge inside the D. However Stuart Callison didn’t strike the spot-hit as cleanly as he’d have liked and keeper Stuart MacRae moved to his left to get his body behind the ball, turning it away for a corner. Donald Nixon and four-goal John MacRae were best for ‘Shiel which Iain Fyfe stood out in an over-worked Lochaber defence.
Inveraray 1 Newtonmore 2 Newtonmore extended their winning run to six matches but they had to work hard to beat bottom side Inveraray 2-1 at the Winterton. Michael Russell gave ‘More a 6 minute lead with a well-hit shot on the run and the ball flew straight into the top corner of the net from around 25 yards range. Garry MacPherson equalised just 4 minutes before the break as he finished off a well-worked move, sending the ball into the bottom corner of the goal. The goal jarred ‘More and, with just a minute of the first half remaining, skipper Evan Menzies put them back in front. Menzies was facing away from Lewis Montgomery and he turned and hit the ball on the back-hand into the roof of the net. Newtonmore dominated the game and the winning margin would have been greater had it not been from a number of outstanding saves from Inveraray keeper Scott MacLachlan, especially in the first half. Inveraray battled well throughout and will take heart from restricting the champions to a single goal victory, showing that none of the sides in the top flight should be under-estimated.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup – First Round Strathglass 3 Oban Celtic 6 Oban Celtic take their place in the Tulloch Homes second round draw after beating Strathglass 6-3 in their 3pm throw up at Cannich. The Strath were missing Penri Jones, Seth Jones, Jono Price, Michael Stokes and Hamish Myers. Oban Celtic’s Ross MacMillan was free of his three match ban whilst Ally McKerracher also returned but Rory Bruce was still out. The Oban side made a good start to the game, putting the hosts on the back-foot from the throw up and they took the lead on 10 minutes. Craig MacMillan played a corner to Ross MacMillan who juggled the ball by his marker before squaring to Ally McKerracher and he slammed the ball home. Referee Deek Cameron awarded Strathglass a disputed penalty on 18 minutes as Scott Douglas and Peter Currie tangled and Douglas converted to level the match. It took Oban Celtic time to settle from the loss of that goal but they went back in front on 35 minutes. A long ball forward was taken by Ally McKerracher who found Ross MacMillan and he darted between a couple of players before playing a return pass to McKerracher who slotted the ball home for the second time. Oban Celtic went for a third goal and it came on 45 minutes. Ross MacMillan beat his man and pushed forward before playing a great, square pass to Andy MacDonald who had darted forward to the back post and MacDonald finished to make it 3-1 at half-time. Strathglass showed they weren’t out of it as they pulled a goal back just 4 minutes into the second half. Scott Douglas gathered a ball forward and he got a yard on his marker before sending a shot high into the net to make it 3-2. Oban Celtic’s response was instant though as Ally McKerracher completed his hat-trick just a minute later. George MacMillan played a great ball up the line to Andy MacDonald who knocked the ball across first time to McKerracher who took the chance to make it 4-2. With Michael MacKinnon looking back to his old self in defence, Ross MacMillan went on to score twice to seal Oban Celtic’s place in the next round. First, on 53 minutes, Craig MacMillan won the ball on the wing and he went on a 20 yard run before picking out Ally McKerracher who turned his man before spotting Ross MacMillan who beat the keeper. Then, on 62 minutes, Andy MacDonald won the ball in midfield and he found Ally McKerracher who again beat his marker and as Ross MacMillan’s marker came forward to try and clear the danger, McKerracher found an unmarked MacMillan who turned the ball home. Oban Celtic took the chance to withdraw Neil Carmichael, who had been nursing a groin injury, for Scott Turnbull. 14 year olds John Douglas and Innes MacDonald also came on and young MacDonald went close to a scoring. Andy MacDonald was another of the players withdrawn after suffering a cut eye. Steven Hyslop pulled a goal back to make it 6-3 on 82 minutes but Oban Celtic progress and they will look to use the win as a springboard ahead of Beauly’s league visit to Oban this coming Saturday.
Ballachulish 1 Fort William 5 Fort William scored three times in the last 15 minutes to beat Ballachulish 5-1 at the Jubilee Park. Arran MacPhee got the Fort off to a great start with his goal coming following a couple of nice pass from Jack Fraser before MacPhee ran onto the ball, hitting it low into the corner of the net. Lorne Brown drew Balla’ level on 33 minutes but Fort William regained the lead a couple of minutes before the break following a mazy dribble and fine finish from Calum Shepherd. The visitors added a third 15 minutes from time. A powerful shot from Lachie Shaw was going wide before Arran MacPhee stopped the ball and fired it home from the edge of the box. There was still time for the An Aird side to score twice more. On 85 minutes, Victor Smith played a quick, clever free-hit which put Calum Shepherd one-on-one with the keeper and he finished well with the ball going in off the inside of the post. Fort William’s fifth goal came a minute from time with a brilliant bit of individual skill from Lachie Shaw which saw him round the last defender before slotting the ball past the keeper from inside the box.
Bute 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Craig Anderson’s last minute penalty earned Glasgow Mid Argyll a replay against Bute as the sides drew 2-2 in their 3pm throw up at the Meadows. GMA took a 20 minute lead when Oliver MacRae collected the ball around the penalty spot, with his back to goal, and he turned before firing a shoulder-high shot into the net. That was the only goal of the first have but the tie swung the Islanders way after the restart. First, Craig Fisher ended broke free at the back post following a corner and he drove a waist-high shot past Robert Dunnings in the GMA goal. Better was to come for the home side when Iain McDonald took a shot from distance and the ball took a deflection before creeping into the net at the bottom left corner. The real drama came in the final minute. There was a melee in the Bute goal area after Kevin Queen had saved from Oliver MacRae and referee David Mitchell ruled that a home defender had fallen on the ball inside the D. Bute protested furiously and there was a long wait before Craig Anderson was able to take the spot-hit but he kept his nerve to score and earn his side a replay at Yoker on Saturday 25 May 2019.
Beauly 3 Inverness 1 Beauly reached the second round with a 3-1 win over Inverness 3-1 at Braeview Park. Jack MacDonald on the angle14 minutes and Colin MacDonald’s shot from distance just 4 minutes later gave Beauly an early cushion. A Thomas Lewis goal from close range on 67 minutes gave Inverness hope but Calum Morrison struck on 79 minutes to give Beauly their 3-1 victory.

Strathspey weren’t to be denied though and former Newtonmore man John MacKenzie completed his hat-trick just 3 minutes later with what proved to be the winner. MacFarlane pulled down a pass from midfield before turning Andrew McMurdo and smashing the ball into the net from 25 yards out. The ground was fiery and both teams struggled to cope with the bounce of the ball. Niall MacFarlane was again involved on 27 minutes when he was fouled inside the box and referee Ewan MacDonald pointed to the spot. The penalty was struck well by Michael MacQueen, leaving the keeper with no chance, and the Oban side led 2-0 at the break.
