The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 1 July 2017 - UPDATED! | |
02 July 2017 Fort William, Lochside Rovers and the Kingussie second team will all play in cup finals this season whilst Kyles Athletic stay top of the Marine Harvest Premiership following the shinty action on Saturday 1 July 2017.
Balliemore Cup - Semi Final Inveraray 1 Fort William 3 Fort William will play Caberfeidh in the 2017 Balliemore Cup Final after they beat Inveraray 3-1 at The Taynuilt Sports Field. Inveraray were along usual lines with Garry MacPherson at full centre, flanked by Ally MacDonald and Lewis MacNicol. Player / manager Ruaraidh Graham and Lewis Montgomery were half forwards leaving Allan MacDonald and Fraser Watt up top. Fort William’s Alexander MacMillan was out with a hand injury and Lewis Clark was also missing but play-maker Bryan Simpson was available. All the goals all came in the final quarter of this tie. With the pitch n immaculate condition, Inveraray started with the wind behind them and they created a number chances but the half, which was tousy at times, eventually ended goalless after a couple of minutes stoppage time. Fort William now had the elements and although Inveraray made the better start to the second half, Fort William started to come more and more into the game. A Fort William reshuffle after Sean Cameron was injured saw Arran MacPhee drop into defence, Bryan Simpson go to full centre and Jack Fraser come on up front, helping swing the tie their way. Seamus Gall put the Fort ahead on 68 minutes. There was a scramble around the penalty spot and Gall sent the ball low past the keeper to score. Jack Fraser made it 2-0 with a well-worked goal just 3 minutes later. The move started from the wing back position to wing centre and then to wing forward before being squared to Fraser just outside the D and he sent the ball into the top corner of the net. Calum Shepherd added a third on 78 minutes. Inveraray keeper Scott MacLachlan saved a Jack Fraser shot and Shepherd was first to the rebound to score. Inveraray never let their heads drop and Allan MacDonald pulled a goal back for Inveraray 5 minutes from time but was too little too late and Fort William go forward to play Caberfeidh in the Balliemore Cup Final at Blairbeg on Saturday 15 July 2017. The defeat puts Inveraray’s five match winning run and they must pick themselves up for this Saturday’s Marine Harvest Camanachd Cup quarter-final at home to Oban Camanachd. Ross Brown was the match referee.
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup - Semi Finals Glenurquhart 0 Lochside Rovers 5 Lochside Rovers reached the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final with a 5-0 win over the Glenurquhart second team at The Jubilee Park. Lewis Buchanan continued his fine scoring streak with the opener on 4 minutes. Chrissie MacMillan played the ball long to Craig MacDougall and Buchanan slipped MacDougall’s ball forward past the advancing keeper to make it 1-0. Craig MacMillan made it 2-0 on 15 minutes with a turn and shot into the roof of the net from around 20 yards out on the wing. Lewis Buchanan got his second on 25 minutes. Craig MacDougall’s shot was saved by Glen keeper Cameron MacLennan and Buchanan netted from the rebound. Michael MacQueen added a fourth on 34 minutes when his 40 yard ball took a bounce to deceive the keeper and the ball ended up in the net. Iain MacMillan made it 5-0 with the goal of the game after 38 minutes. MacMillan went on a run from around the half-way line, turning a defender before striking home from around 30 yards out. Lochside Rovers played with a strong win in their favour in the first half but, unfortunately for the Glen, the wind died down for the second half but they stuck at it and the closest they came to pulling a goal back was a 20 yard shot which Lochside keeper Cameron Sutherland stretched high to turn away for a corner with his caman. Half back Craig Easton and Daniel Sloss – both U17 players – were best for Lochside who now have a final to look forward to. Scott McNeil was the match referee.
Kingussie 6 Newtonmore 4 The Kingussie colts came out on top, winning this semi-final 6-4, against Badenoch rivals and cup holders Newtonmore colts at The Dell. The venue was decided by the toss of a coin and ‘More gained an early advantage with Chris Sellar on 4 minutes and John MacKenzie on 12 minutes putting them two up. However the Kings stormed back and they scored the game’s next six goals. Ruaridh Anderson on 24 minutes and Dylan Borthwick on 28 minutes levelled the tied before Roddy Young fired home on the half hour point to put the hosts 3-2 up at the break. The same three Kingussie players scored again in the second half as Roddy Young on 52 minutes, Dylan Borthwick a couple of minutes later and Ruaridh Anderson on 64 minutes made it 6-2. A second from Chris Sellar on 81 minutes and an Evan Menzies goal on 84 minutes made it 6-4 but ‘More had left themselves too much to do so the Kingussie seconds, last year’s beaten finalists, will now face Lochside Rovers in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final at An Aird on Saturday 29 July 2017. Brian MacKay was the match referee.
Marine Harvest Premiership Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Kyles Athletic 2 Kyles Athletic stay out in front in the Marine Harvest Premiership but they had to work hard to beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 2-1 at Yoker. GMA’s Duncan “Ach” MacRae was still injured whilst Ryan Harrison was on holiday. Innes MacDonald remained out with an ankle injury for Kyles whilst his brother Roddy MacDonald was omitted with a shoulder injury. Sandy MacKenzie was also missing so Rupert Williamson came into the side. This was the fourth meeting between the sides over the last seven weeks and although Kyles had won all three previous encounters; they knew this would be a difficult encounter at the Glasgow side’s home turf. Gordon Whyte gave Kyles the lead after 5 minutes with what was a scrappy goal. An unmarked Whyte collected a ball from the left and his mis-hit shot trundled past GMA keeper Robert Dunnings and into the net. GMA fought back and levelled after 15 minutes when a shot from the right was saved by visiting keeper John Whyte but Finlay MacMillan was there to pounce in the rebound to make it 1-1. Kyles went back in front on 26 minutes and this time Thomas Whyte was their marksman. The goal was almost identical the Kyles opener with Whyte punishing some sloppy GMA defending and although his shot lacked power; it found the net. The game was played in good spirit and tempo during the first half. Kyles had the strong wind behind them in the second half and they passed up chances as efforts from Dunkie Kerr and Thomas Whyte went by the post. GMA also created opportunities and one strike from Finlay MacMillan went narrowly over the bar on 68 minutes. There was a moment of controversy on 72 minutes when a long looping ball dropped into the Kyles’ box and keeper John Whyte came out to chest the ball down. However he mis-judged the flight of the ball and it went a few yards under his legs. Whyte ended up on the ground and he eventually cleared the danger but both referee John Angus Gillies and his goal judged deemed that the keeper was not endangering himself as he played the ball away. Kyles brought Grant Irvine off the bench and he almost made an instant impact as he ran from around the half way line, dribbling past four GMA players, but he missed the target from inside the D. GMA played really well and gave Kyles a good match. John Don MacKenzie was solid in defence though he was booked for persistent fouling along with Finlay MacMillan. Donald Irvine was again commanding at full centre from Kyles who have reached the halfway point in their league campaign with a 1-1 draw against Oban Camanachd their only blemish.
Kinlochshiel 2 Lovat 1 Kinlochshiel safely negotiated a tricky encounter, beating Lovat 2-1 in their noon throw up at very wet Kirkton. Kinlochshiel’s Colin MacDiarmid remained suspended whilst Finlay MacRae and John MacRae were on holiday. Oliver MacRae and Gordie MacDonald remained injured with Alasdair Nixon also still out but Jordan Fraser returned and there was a starting spot at full forward for Scott MacLean. Lorne MacKay and Craig Mainland stayed sidelined for Lovat with manager Fraser Gallacher naming himself on the bench alongside Cameron MacMillan. ‘Shiel played down the slope in the first half and Fraser MacVicar followed up his winning goal against Kingussie last weekend with the opener in this one after 19 minutes. Scott MacLean held the ball up on the ‘Shiel left and Keith MacRae ran outside him towards the corner flag. MacRae hit a shot from a tight angle which was saved by Stuart MacDonald but Fraser MacVicar timed his run to perfection to score from the rebound from eight yards out. Keith MacRae made it 2-0 on 39 minutes. There was a scramble at the edge of the D and Scott MacLean was again involved, this time touching the ball to Keith MacRae who had lost his marker. MacRae hit a terrific low shot which skidded off the greasy surface just in front of keeper MacDonald on its way into the net. Scott Kennedy is having a fantastic season in the ‘Shiel goal and he made some good saves in the first half including stretching to his left to palm away a great Lewis Tawse drive. The wet surface made it difficult for both sets of players and when ‘Shiel struggled to clear their lines just 30 seconds into the second half, Ryan Ferguson lashed the ball goalwards from just further forward than the wing centre position and the strike just beat Scott Kennedy by his post, squeezing through the space with the keeper getting a toe to the ball. Fraser Gallacher came off the bench in place of Martin Bell after 55 minutes. ‘Shiel youngster Duncan Matheson replaced forward Fraser MacVicar who went off with what looked like a groin injury. The conditions were making it difficult for the players to keep their footing and MacVicar was forced back on when Scott MacLean suffered a facial injury after a tussle with Drew Howie. ‘Shiel also introduced Graham Morrison for his first appearance for a couple of years and he will likely feature for the seconds for the remainder of the season. Stuart MacDonald was by far the busier keeper in the second half with his opposite number Scott Kennedy having little to do. Kinlochshiel’s best players were at the back with Mark MacDonald outstanding. Lovat struggled to get much support to Greg Matheson and keeper Stuart MacDonald was probably their best player and his clean hitting, clearing the ball sweeper-style from around his goal area, was a feature of the game. Lovat meet Kilmallie at The Canal Parks in the Marine Harvest Camanachd Cup quarter-finals this Saturday.
Newtonmore 2 Glenurquhart 0 Newtonmore go fourth in the division after they beat Glenurquhart 2-0 in their noon throw up at The Eilan. Newtonmore’s Steven MacDonald served a one match ban for passing through the disciplinary points threshold. Michael Russell, Andy MacKintosh and Jamie Robinson were also out but Fraser MacKintosh returned after injury. Iain Richardson played at full centre where he had an excellent game whilst David Fraser came into the defence. Glenurquhart also had selection problems with Andrew Corrigan, Connor Golabek, Euan Lloyd, James Hurwood and the suspended Callum Smith amongst their absentees, The Glen were also missing Neale Reid following his decision to take a break from shinty and manger Iain Macleod named himself in the full forward position. With just a minute of the first half remaining, Fraser MacKintosh broke the deadlock as he collected a ball from Evan Menzies and made space before sending a great strike past Stuart MacKintosh to make it 1-0. Iain Robinson sealed the win on 83 minutes. Glen cleared a ball into the danger-area out onto the wing and when it was played back in, Robinson, who started on the bench, shot goalwards with the ball taking a deflection off a defender on its way into the net. With this coming Saturday’s Marine Harvest Camanachd Cup quarter-final tie against Kyles Athletic looming, Newtonmore manager Paul John MacKintosh could have done without fresh injuries to Paul MacArthur, who was carried off with an ankle problem, and Drew MacDonald.
Lochaber 0 Oban Camanachd 3 Oban Camanachd climb to sixth in the table after they beat Lochaber 3-0 in their 3pm throw up at Spean Bridge. Lochaber boss Ally Ferguson was without Martin Johnstone who served a one match suspension for passing through the disciplinary points threshold. This was Oban Camanachd’s first league match since Saturday 20 May and manager Iain Hay welcomed Gary McKerracher and Daniel MacVicar back from holiday but Aiden MacIntyre was at a wedding. It proved to be an eventful weekend for Oban Camanachd forward Malcolm Clark. He became a father for the second time just 24 hours earlier following the birth of his son Lewis. He then celebrated in style by giving Oban Camanachd a 27 minute lead. Daniel Cameron played a diagonal ball across the D where Clark ran onto it and, from the edge of the box; he crashed the ball on the bounce into the roof of the net to make it 1-0. Having set up the first goal, Daniel Cameron turned scorer for the second. Willie Neilson took the ball out the air and it broke to Cameron around 15 yards out and he struck it through a group of players, and through the keeper’s legs, into the net. Oban Camanachd sealed the win 10 minutes from time. The visitors broke up the left flank and substitute David Lafferty made a great run up the opposite side of the field. Daniel Cameron switched the ball across the penalty spot where Lafferty arrived to the right side of the goal and he took a touch before driving the ball high past keeper at his near post. This was a much better performance from an Oban Camanachd side who didn’t do themselves justice against Kyles Athletic in the Gregor Cameron Glasgow Celtic Society Cup a week earlier. Next up this coming Saturday is one of the biggest games of the season so far; a Marine Harvest Camanachd Cup quarter-final tie against Inveraray at The Winterton.
Marine Harvest National Division Caberfeidh 5 Inverness 1 Caberfeidh stay top of the Marine Harvest National Division, beating Inverness 5-1 in their noon throw up at Cannich. Ryan MacKay was banned for the home side who took the lead after 6 minutes through Kevin Bartlett. Martin MacDonald made it 2-0 on 39 minutes and when referee Martin MacLean awarded Cabers a penalty 3 minutes before the break, Kevin Bartlett took responsibility to score his second goal of the game. Kevin Bartlett completed his hat-trick on 58 minutes and Jamie MacIntosh made it 5-0 on 83 minutes. James Cameron hit a consolation goal for Inverness a minute later and the Highland Capital side can take some comfort from a much better showing than against Inveraray in their previous outing.
Skye Camanachd 6 Strathglass 0 Skye Camanachd stay second after they defeated Strathglass 6-0 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Kenny Campbell and Gibbs MacDonald returned for Skye with the latter starting on the bench. However Jordan Murchison was a late call-off through injury. Strathglass travelled with a strong squad with Ryan Balharry their only absentee. Skye’s Danny Morrison twice went close before he gave the Islanders a 13 minute lead. Iain MacLellan finished well from the edge of the D after 32 minutes to make it 2-0 at the break. Strathglass almost pulled a goal back at the start of the second half but were foiled by a combination of Skye keeper Iain MacLeod and defender Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod before the home side broke forward and Will Cowie slammed home a rebound to make it 3-0 with 47 minutes played. James Pringle added a fourth on 51 minutes following a Kenny Campbell free-hit and Iain MacLellan got his second when he crashed the ball high into the net on 55 minutes to make it 5-0. Will Cowie rounded off the scoring with great solo goal on 78 minutes. Cowie got away from marker George Phimister, who had come on at the break, and he ran into the D from the left wing before rolling the ball into the net to make it 6-0. The sides meet again this coming weekend – this time at Cannich – in the quarter-finals of the Marine Harvest Camanachd Cup.
Beauly 4 Oban Celtic 3 Beauly came from two goals down to beat Oban Celtic 4-3 in their 2pm throw up at Braeview Park. Beauly were boosted by Marc MacLachlan and Sean Stewart’s return to the side a week earlier and both were to feature strongly in this one too. Ally McKerracher was free of suspension for Oban Celtic who got off to a flier as a rocket Ross MacMillan shot on 7 minutes and a neat Daniel Madej finish past advancing keeper Josh Grant on 19 minutes gave them a 2-0 lead. Beauly pulled a goal back on 23 minutes with Marc MacLachlan slamming the ball home from around the penalty spot. The next goal was always going to be crucial and it came a minute into the second half with Sean Stewart scoring. Connor Howe, Daniel Madej and Ross MacMillan all tested Josh Grant before Marc MacLachlan struck on 67 and 74 minutes to put Beauly 4-2 ahead. Daniel Madej scored his second goal of the game a minute from time to make for a nervy finish but Beauly saw out the closing stages to win the game. Oban Celtic will curse their second half slump and they have a chance to put things right this coming Saturday when they travel to play Inverness at The Bught Park whilst Beauly visit on-form Fort William.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kinlochshiel 2 Aberdeen University 4 Aberdeen University cut the gap on league leaders Newtonmore seconds to just two points with a last-gasp 4-2 victory over the Kinlochshiel seconds at Kirkton. A Graham Morrison lob from distance put ‘Shiel ahead on 12 minutes but Alex Duncan drew The Students level on 23 minutes when he took advantage after the hosts failed to clear their lines. Graham Kennedy set up Neil Fraser to put ‘Shiel 2-1 ahead on 33 minutes and they stayed in front until half time. Aberdeen University came back strongly in the second half but they weren’t able to level until 79 minutes with Gregor Cushnie scoring. The visitors refused to settle for a point though and Ewan Fraser on 88 minutes and a second from Gregor Cushnie on the stroke of full time gave them a 4-2 win.
Fort William 3 Beauly 3 The match between the Fort William and Beauly second teams at An Aird was brought forward to Friday 30 June 2017 with a 7pm throw up. After an entertaining encounter, Beauly scored twice in the second half to come from 3-1 down and earn a valuable league point. Fort William’s Ewan Campbell was suspended. Donnie Walker put Fort William ahead on 25 minutes but Lee Dunbar levelled a couple of minutes later. A second from Donnie Walker on 31 minutes and a Connor MacRae goal on 39 minutes made it 3-1 at the break, giving the home side the ascendancy. However Beauly fought back and goals from Kieran MacTavish on 52 minutes and Rory Campbell on 58 minutes earned the Beauly colts what was just their third point of the season.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Aberdour 2 Bute 2 With Lochside Rovers in cup action, Aberdour extended their lead at the top of the table following a 2-2 draw with Bute at Silversands. The match was scheduled for a 1.30pm throw up but there was a slight delay due to problems with the Bute ferry. The game’s opening goal came on 10 minutes when David MacKenzie’s low shot deflected into the bottom right corner of the net off the keeper’s legs. Bute equalised on 17 minutes when Franco Devlin’s low shot from distance sneaked into the bottom corner of the net. Aberdour regained the lead on 23 minutes following a well-worked free-hit which saw the impressive Alec Mitchell picking out David MacKenzie in space and he scored his second goal of the game. Home defender Ruairidh Reid was doing a good marking job on Bute danger-man Ian McDonald and Aberdour took their 2-1 advantage into the break. If Aberdour edged the first half then the Islanders, now playing down the slope with wind advantage, took the second period and they searched for a second leveller. They got their reward on 63 minutes when a free-hit from just inside the Aberdour half was sent out to the wing and France Devlin shot from a wide went past an unsighted Tom Bowerman in the Aberdour goal Bute went for a winner but Aberdour, who created a couple of opportunities of their own, held out for the draw.
