08 September 2014 Newtonmore won the Orion Group Premiership and the Beauly reserves lifted the inaugural Strathdearn Plate following the shinty action on Saturday 6 September 2014.
Strathdearn Plate Final Lovat 0 Beauly 3 Beauly lifted the Strathdearn Plate following a 3-0 win over neighbours Lovat at Castle Leod. Lovat manager Graeme MacMillan was without Martin Bell who started a two match ban for his red card in his substitute appearance against Newtonmore a fortnight earlier. Sandy Tulloch missed out on a final appearance against his old club through work commitments. Beauly boss Stephen MacLean was minus Dougie Blaine and Ryan Tillman bust first team manager Roger Cormack started at full back. There were early chances at both ends before Beauly started to press the Lovat defence and they took the lead on 23 minutes thanks to a Ross Forbes strike which flew high into the net. Robbie Brindle almost made it 2-0 but saw his shot come back off the post. Beauly pressed hard from the start of the second half and they doubled their lead on 53 minutes. Stephen MacLean sent a dipping shot goalwards and although Lovat keeper Chris MacCallum saved his effort, Sandy Elrick reacted first to thump the rebound into the net to make it 2-0. Lovat tried to get back in the game but Beauly wrapped up the 3-0 victory just 3 minutes from time when Stephen MacLean netted following a goalmouth scramble. David MacMaster presented the inaugural Strathdearn Plate to Beauly captain Neil Brindle. Calum Girvan was the match referee, assisted by goal judges Archie Ritchie and Robert Morrison.
Orion Group Premiership Inveraray 0 Newtonmore 3 Newtonmore lifted the Orion Group Premiership title for the fifth successive season following their 3-0 win over Inveraray at the Winterton. Inveraray were without Douglas Dando, David Robertson – who broke his toe playing football during the week - and Grant Griffin. David MacPherson started at centre and Gary MacPherson returned to the attack after playing in defence against Kyles in the team’s last outing. The match marked a final appearance for now in Inveraray shirt Peter McIntyre. The former Kilmallie player heads for Australia in November and he has been an ever-present for Inveraray during his two seasons with the club. Newtonmore’s Norman Campbell travelled with the squad but injury meant he was unable to play. Steven MacDonald started in his place at full back. Inveraray had only played two matches since 5 July 2014 – indeed there have only been a total of five Orion Group Premiership matches during the month of August - and they lacked match sharpness but competed well. The game was very tight and there were chances at both ends before a superb Paul MacArthur shot gave ‘More the lead on the stroke of half-time. When Nick Crawford turned a Glen MacKintosh effort into his own net on 55 minutes, the visitors looked set to win the title. Glen MacKintosh rounded off the 3-0 win with a strike 15 minutes from time. Peter McIntyre was best for Inveraray with Ackie Macrae catching the eye for Newtonmore. Newtonmore have once again proved to be top of the pile despite suffering a horrendous run of injuries throughout the season and they are deserved champions. ‘More captain Scott Chisholm was presented with the Orion Group Premiership trophy by Camanachd Association Director Charles Young.
