The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 31 May 2014 | |
01 June 2014 Six of the second round ties of shinty’s premier competition, the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup, went ahead on Saturday 31 May 2014.
Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – Second Round Kyles Athletic 2 Newtonmore 1 Holders Newtonmore are out of this year’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup after an injury-time strike from Colin MacDonald gave Kyles Athletic a 2-1 win in their tie at Tighnabruaich. Kyles suffered a blow as keeper Kenny MacDonald couldn’t take his usual place between the posts as he was hit in the eye by a ball at training during the week. However John Whyte proved to be an able deputy in goal. Forward Tom Whyte was another injury absentee. Newtonmore had injury problems of their own and none more so than the absence in attack of talisman Danny MacRae. This was a repeat of last year’s final which Newtonmore won 3-0 and the sides couldn’t be separated following a hard fought first half. Kyles went in front on 65 minutes when a low shot from Roberto Zavaroni bounced on the hard surface before beating Michael Ritchie to make it 1-0. Kyles almost doubled their advantage in spectacular style when a Zac Coley shot from the half-way line came back off the crossbar and Michael Ritchie saved the follow up shot from Roddy MacDonald. And that’s the way it stayed until the dramatic closing stages of this gripping encounter. Newtonmore had pushed Steven MacDonald forward and he levelled with just 6 minutes remaining. It looked as if the sides would have to do it all over again at the Eilan this coming Saturday as referee Billy Wotherspoon took the tie into extra time. However the home support were sent into raptures when a Colin MacDonald drive hit the back of the net to make it 2-1 and clinch a place in the next round.
Bute 0 Skye Camanachd 3 Skye Camanachd are the only side outwith shinty’s national divisions to reach the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup quarter final stage after they beat Bute 3-0 in their all-Island clash at the Meadows. Bute pulled out all the stops to get this tie played and they had the local fire brigade pumping water off their pitch the day before the game after a blocked drain caused some flooding. Skye travelled south to Glasgow on the Friday evening and they went into the match without Jordan Murchison and Neil MacVicar who were both injured and Kenny MacLeod who was unavailable. However keeper Jamie Gannon returned between the sticks. Shockie MacLennan put Skye ahead after just 7 minutes and Kenny Campbell made it 2-0 with 25 minutes on the clock. Shockie MacLennan got his second and Skye’s third on 73 minutes to seal a place in the last eight. Bute’s misery was complete when they saw a late penalty saved by Jamie Gannon and they also had a player sent off by referee Davie Mitchell. Skye’s Will Cowie saw an injury time penalty saved by Kevin Queen. Skye can now look forward to Monday morning’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup quarter final draw.
Beauly 0 Kinlochshiel 1 A Jordan Fraser penalty was all that separated Beauly and Kinlochshiel in their tie at Braeview Park. The home side were along usual lines with MacKay Murray’s good performances for the Beauly second string earning him a place on the bench. Visitors Kinlochshiel gave Neil Fraser a start in attack with Keith MacRae lining up at full forward. Both sides had periods of pressure in the first half before Keith MacRae came closest to breaking the deadlock when he made space for himself on the right before crashing a shot off the crossbar. Alasdair Nixon went close for ‘Shiel just after the restart and although Beauly tested the ‘Shiel defence, they struggled to really trouble keeper Scott Kennedy. At the other end, Josh Grant made a smart stop from Neil Fraser. Jack MacDonald sent a shot just the wrong side of the post and both sets of supporters were set for a nerve-jangling final quarter of the tie. The crucial goal came on 76 minutes when referee Evan MacRae ruled that Beauly full back David Neilson had kicked the ball inside the D. The pressure fell on Jordan Fraser’s young shoulders but the ‘Shiel substitute is a clean hitter of the ball and he gave Josh Grant no chance as he fired low into the net to make it 1-0. Scott Kennedy saved with his feet from Conor Ross but there was to be no second chance for Beauly as Kinlochshiel progress to the last eight.
Lochaber 3 Glenurquhart 5 Glenurquhart saw off a late fight-back before finally beating Lochaber 5-3 in their tie at Spean Bridge. The sides had met at Blairbeg on league duty just seven days earlier with the Glen taking both points thanks to a 2-0 win. Andrew Corrigan was back in the visiting line-up and Michael Brady was free of suspension. There returns were timely as Lewis MacLennan served a one match ban for a points accumulation. Scott Patterson gave Lochaber an 8 minute lead but David Smart restored parity on 12 minutes. Glenurquhart pulled away though as Fraser Heath on 12 minutes, Neale Reid on 21 minutes and James MacPherson on the stroke of half time made it 4-1. Indeed when James MacPherson got his second and Glenurquhart’s fifth just four minutes after the restart, there only looked as if there was going to be one winner. Goals from Ryan Johnstone and Stuart Callison narrowed the gap but Glenurquhart ran out 5-3 winners.
Fort William 7 Caberfeidh 3 Fort William came out on top as there were goals aplenty in their all-Marine Harvest National Division tie against Caberfeidh at An Aird. The home side were without Gary Innes and Jack Fraser whilst Steven Stewart played with strapping on his leg. Fort William started with the breeze at their backs but it was Cabers who took a first minute lead courtesy of a Lewis Smith own goal. However Donald Stewart on 16 minutes and Bryan Simpson just 3 minutes later put the Fort in front and they stayed there for the rest of the match. Daniel Stewart got his second when he sent a great shot high into the net on 35 minutes and to make it 3-1. When Gordie MacKinnon added a fourth just 60 seconds later, after a Bryan Simpson effort was deflected into his path, things looked bleak for Cabers. Bryan Simpson cut in from the left before shooting into the side-netting as the visiting goal was put under severe pressure. Iain MacColl made it 4-2 just 10 minutes into the second half but Arran MacPhee restored Fort William’s three goal cushion when he made it 5-2 on 73 minutes and Daniel Stewart completed his hat-trick on 77 minutes. Craig Morrison netted for Cabers a minute later but Bryan Simpson got his second 5 minutes from time to round off a 7-3 victory.
Kilmallie 4 Ballachulish 0 Marine Harvest National Division side Kilmallie beat Ballachulish from Marine Harvest South Division 1 4-0 in their 1.30pm throw up at the Canal Parks. Liam MacDonald was missing for Kilmallie whilst Balla’s John MacDonald served the second game of a two match ban for a points accumulation. All the goals came in the second half. Mark Graham put Kilmallie ahead on 51 minutes and when referee David Stafford pointed to the penalty spot 5 minutes later, Michael Rodger stepped up to make it 2-0. Ryan Stewart added a third on 65 minutes and Mark Graham got his second 10 minutes from time to round off a good win.
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup - Second Round The SCOTS 1 Beauly 4 Beauly are the final team through to the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup quarter finals following their 4-1 win over Forces side The SCOTS in their 3pm throw up at Levenhall, Musselburgh. Colin Irving was on target for The SCOTS but goals from Ross Forbes, a Jamie MacLennan penalty, Sandy Elrick and Andrew Fraser gave Beauly the win. Beauly now travel to the Dell this coming weekend to play Kingussie in their last eight tie.
Strathdearn Cup - First Round Lovat 0 Fort William 1 (after extra time) The tie of the Strathdearn Cup first round was the meeting between Lovat and Fort William at Balgate. The first 90 minutes went by without a goal so referee Archie Ritchie took the tie to extra time. Fort William’s Ewan Campbell found the back of the net on 96 minutes and his goal won the Fort a quarter final slot.
Glenurquhart 6 Lochaber 4 (after extra time) It also took extra time to separate Glenurquhart and Lochaber at Blairbeg before the home side eventually ran out 6-4 victors. The Glen came from 3-1 down to lead 4-3 with Calum Smith getting their fourth. However Lochaber drew level at 4-4 so referee Innes Wood started an extra time period. Cairn Urquhart, a Calum Smith hat-trick and two from Ben Hosie all counted for Glenurquhart. Danny Delaney and Stuart Matheson scored two each for Lochaber.
Skye Camanachd 4 Inverness 0 The Skye Camanachd second team beat the Inverness reserves 4-0 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Inverness put up a great fight and with only 15 minutes remaining, the sides were only separated by a 10 minute John Gillies goal. Indeed Skye U14 player Gillies, making his first second team start, looked the most likely to add to the home side’s tally and he did just that when he latched onto an Angie MacDonald ball on 75 minutes. Angie MacDonald beat keeper Colin Fraser in a race for the ball to make it 3-0 on 79 minutes and Ally “Cleodi” Macleod made it 4-0 on 90 minutes. Skye now travel to Kilmallie or Beauly in the quarter finals.
Lewis Camanachd 0 Strathspey Camanachd 6 Lewis Camanachd played their first cup tie at Shawbost but eventually went down 6-0 to Strathspey Camanachd. The visitors scored three times in each half and two blistering drives from Andy Hay helped him along the way to a hat-trick. Matthew Davis, Edgars Peca and Mark MacDonald got the others.
Caberfeidh 1 Kinlochshiel 2 Kinlochshiel edged out Caberfeidh, winning 2-1 at Castle Leod. The goal scorers both still play U17 shinty with Callum Macculloch’s goal for Cabers being cancelled out by a Colin MacRae brace.
Lochbroom W/O v Strathglass The Strathglass second team have not entered the league this season but they have put a side forward for the junior cup competitions. However they were unable to raise a team for their trip to Inverlael so Lochbroom have been given a walk-over into the next round.
Bullough Cup - First Round Inveraray 6 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Inveraray were too strong for Glasgow Mid Argyll, as they won 6-0 in their noon throw up at the Winterton. An Iain MacDonald double, Neil Shaw, two from Ewan Fyfe and one from Gordon Pirie all counted for Inveraray.
Tayforth 9 Aberdour 0 Tayforth swept aside a younger Aberdour side 9-0 in their noon throw up at Levenhall, Musselburgh. Jamie MacDonald, Craig Ferrier and Somhairle Fraser all scored twice for Tayforth with Steven Thomson, Rory Fraser and Derry Barton getting the others.

Former Skye keeper John MacLeod was in goal for the ESA and he was beaten by a Patrick MacLean penalty on 38 minutes after referee John Wood had pointed to the spot. Alistair MacDonald made it 2-0 on 58 minutes.
Glenorchy 0 Col Glen 2 Col Glen had a successful trip to Mart Park as they beat the Glenorchy reserves 2-0 in their noon throw up. Steven MacKellar broke the deadlock 5 minutes before the break. However it took until 9 minutes from time before Stuart MacKellar added a second to seal the win.
Oban Celtic v Kyles Athletic W/O Kyles Athletic have been given a walk-over into the next round after the Oban Celtic second team were unable to raise a team for their tie in Oban.
Orion Group Premiership Inveraray 3 Lovat 3 With Kingussie having their nominated “Free Saturday” to attend their player Fraser Munro’s wedding, their Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup meeting with Lovat was put back a week. Inveraray face Inverness in the same competition but with the Bught being unavailable, their game was also delayed seven days. This allowed Lovat to play their Orion Group Premiership game in hand and they headed south to the Winterton to face Inveraray. However Lovat dropped what could prove to be a vital point when a last minute Lewis MacNicol goal earned Inveraray a 3-3 draw in their 3pm throw up. Defender Alan MacDonald started a two match ban for Inveraray following a points accumulation whilst Kevin Bartlett returned for Lovat. Things were going to plan for the Balgate side when Graeme MacMillan gave them a 15 minute lead and Jamie Matheson made it 2-0 on 41 minutes. However Inveraray made a good start to the second half when Neil Campbell on 54 minutes and Lewis MacNicol on 66 minutes drew the sides level. Graeme MacMillan got his second on 77 minutes to make it 3-2 but with the final whistle just seconds away, Lewis MacNicol got his second to make it 3-3. Second half goals from Andrew MacCuish on 49 minutes, Aidan MacIntyre on 64 minutes and Lorn Dickie on 77 minutes saw Gussie Campbell’s side take both points. The win takes Oban Camanachd back to the top of the table.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Strathglass 3 Inverness 1 Strathglass closed the gap on league leaders Skye Camanachd to a single point with a 3-1 win over Inverness at Cannich. The Inverness squad was boosted by the addition of Somhairle MacDonald who resigned for the club earlier in the week. Strathglass went in front on 6 minutes through Robert Geddes and they had early chances to add to their tally. Inverness threatened on 17 minutes as Dougie Rankin fired in an effort from 20 yards. Inverness started the second half with a bit more urgency and they had a strong claim for a penalty when they claimed Donald MacKay kicked the ball inside the D. However the incident was hard for referee John Angus Gillies to see and the goal judge did not immediately flag. However Inverness did get a penalty shortly after when Sorley MacDonald was bundled down inside the D. Martin Davidson stepped up to take the spot-hit but he struck the ball straight at the keeper and the chance to equalise was gone. A Darren Reid pile-driver made it 2-0 on 74 minutes and Ally MacAdams added a third on 85 minutes with a very good 20 yard drive. Somhairle MacDonald pulled a goal back for Inverness a minute later and a late Donald Fraser effort was ruled out by referee Gillies as Strath forward Robert Geddes was offside.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Kilmory 1 Aberdour 2 Aberdour go second after they beat Kilmory 2-1 at MacRae Park. Darren Coyle put the visitors ahead on 28 minutes with the only goal of the first half. Craig Taylor made it 1-1 on 55 minutes and a share of the points seemed likely until Aberdour’s Kevin MacKell netted the winner 5 minutes from time. Aberdour trail leaders Kyles Athletic by three points but they have two games in hand. However both sides will have one eye on fourth place Ballachulish. The Jubilee Park side have five points from only three games played due to their various cup commitments.
Taynuilt 2 Lochside Rovers 6 Lochside Rovers beat Taynuilt 6-2 at the Playing Field to climb to third in the table. An early double from David MacMillan on 15 minutes and 27 minutes gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. Scott Dempster added a third on 35 minutes but the home side fought back and two goals in two minutes from Stuart Scott on 43 and 44 minutes cut Lochside’s lead to 3-2 at the break. However three goals in the first fifteen minutes of the second half put Lochside out of sight. Robert Alexander made it 4-2 on 51 minutes. Scott Turnbull on 55 minutes and Diarmid MacMillan on the hour mark rounded off the win.
Strachur 0 Oban Celtic 2 A goal in each half moved Oban Celtic off the bottom of the table as they beat Strachur 2-0 at Strachurmore. Ross MacDonald was out for Strachur as he serves a three game ban. Lee Askew gave the visitors a 7 minute lead and Kenny Wotherspoon made it 2-0 on 41 minutes to seal a morale-boosting victory. The Oban side move within a point of sixth place Strachur after five matches.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Aberdeen University 5 Glengarry 1 Bottom of the table Aberdeen University were surprise winners over league leaders Glengarry at Balgownie. The Students were without the influential Willie Hunter who picked up a two game ban for a points accumulation. Brian Slattery was given a man-marking job on ‘Garry danger-man Daniel MacLennan and it was a task he acquitted himself to with some aplomb. Stuart Gregory again missed out for ‘Garry. The home side got off to a flier as player / manager Jamie Beaton gave them a 3 minute lead. John Sweeney made it 2-0 on 7 minutes and Mark Fraser opened his account on 18 minutes to make it 3-0 at the break. Mark Fraser went on to complete his hat-trick with goals on 46 and 55 minutes to make it 5-0. Andrew Gilchrist’s strike 10 minutes from time was small consolation for Glengarry as the home side ran out 5-1 winners.
Boleskine 1 Lochcarron 5 Lochcarron closed the gap on the leading pack with a 5-1 win over Boleskine at Farr. Lochcarron played goalie Peter MacKenzie outfield with youth keeper Matthew Young taking over in goal. And it was MacKenzie who put Lochcarron in front after just 4 minutes.
