Orion Group Premiership Lovat 2 Kingussie 2 Lovat and Kingussie shared the points following an entertaining 2-2 draw in their 3pm throw up at Balgate. Allan MacRae’s Lovat side were without suspended pair Calum Cruden and Lorne MacKay. The injured Drew Howie and Calum Macaulay and twins Craig and Martin Mainland were also missing. Greg Matheson recovered from a knock to play. Russell Jones took sole charge of Kingussie with Davie Anderson in Portree watching the Kingussie U14 side. There was no Ronald Ross whilst Lee Bain and Savio Genini were working and Fraser Munro was another absentee. Lovat played the first half with a strong wind in their favour but they were unable to break the deadlock until 5 minutes before the break when a good passing move culminated in a neat Iain Nicolson pass to Kevin Bartlett in space and the Scotland international slammed the ball past Kingussie keeper Craig Dawson to make it 1-0. Kingussie had the wind in their favour in the second half and boss Russell Jones made an inspired substitution introducing North U17 player Robert Mabon in attack and Mabon made an immediate impact when he levelled the contest when he made it 1-1 with his first hit of the ball. Lovat restored their lead on 80 minutes. The home side broke forward and Kevin Bartlett gathered possession. The Kings’ defence seemed to stop, claiming a kick, but with no whistle, Bartlett took advantage and shot through a ruck of players, past an unsighted Craig Dawson to make it 2-1. With just a minute remaining, referee Innes Wood pointed to the penalty spot and Mabon was again involved as he was brought down by Lovat goalie Stuart MacDonald. Garry Munro took responsibility and he scored from the spot to make it 2-2. The result confirms Co-operative MacTavish Cup winners Lovat’s second place finish whilst Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup winners Kingussie claim fourth spot in the table.

Marine Harvest National Division Oban Camanachd A Fort William A It was a case of expect the unexpected as a large crowd gathered for the Orion Group Premiership promotion decider between Oban Camanachd and Fort William at Mossfield. Work commitments ruled out Fort William’s Neil Robertson but Gary Innes was included and he wore the number nine shirt. Oban Camanachd started with the wind in their favour and they took the lead on 25 minutes through Aidan MacIntyre. The home side had the better of the first 45 minutes but Fort William made a promising start to the second half. The game’s flashpoint came on 51 minutes when referee Robert Baxter was struck by a fast-moving ball and was unable to continue. There were several Camanachd Association referees in attendance but there was confusion over how the rules should be applied in such circumstances and after taking official advice, the match was eventually abandoned. With the international programme about to start, there could be a delay before the rearranged fixture is eventually played. We wish referee Robert Baxter a speedy recovery.
