The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 19 April 2014 | |
20 April 2014 It was back to cup action and a sprinkling of league matches in a full shinty programme on Saturday 19 April 2014.
RBS MacTavish Cup Quarter Finals Kilmallie 2 Lovat 5 Holders Lovat are through to the last four of this year’s competition after their 5-2 win over Kilmallie in their 4pm throw up at the Canal Parks. Lovat made a bright start to the game and they were awarded a 4 minute penalty by referee Innes Wood when home keeper Shane Gillies was deemed to have saved the ball with his foot off the ground. Greg Matheson slotted home the penalty to make it 1-0. Liam MacDonald levelled for Kilmallie on 13 minutes but good passing move from Lovat just 3 minutes later gave the visitors the chance to go back in front and Greg Matheson finished in style. Greg Matheson then completed his hat-trick with just half an hour on the clock to make it 3-1. And that’s the way it stayed until 12 minutes from time when substitute Graeme MacMillan made it 4-1. Kevin Bartlett added a fifth 5 minutes from time. Kilmallie pulled a goal back on 88 minutes with Liam MacDonald’s second goal; this time from the penalty spot to make the final score 5-2.
Newtonmore 3 Beauly 0 Three goals in the last 20 minutes saw Newtonmore beat Beauly 3-0 at the Eilan. Newtonmore manager Paul John MacKintosh had a bit of a selection headache with three of his defenders - Norman Campbell, Cameron Binnie and Ackie MacRae – all missing as were midfielder Andy MacKintosh and forward Glen MacKintosh. Scott Campbell and Liam Mullender came into the defence whilst Calum Stewart and Craig Ritchie also played the whole game. Beauly’s Conor Cormack was free of suspension after serving a two match ban and he started in defence. Newtonmore had more than their fair share of the first half and only some stout Beauly defending and some good saves from visiting keeper Josh Grant kept the game goalless at the break. The Beauly keeper also had a busy second half whilst the visitors’ best chance of a shock seemed to be on the counter-attack. Newtonmore brought on substitute John MacKenzie with Fraser MacKintosh dropping back in defence and the move was to pay dividends. It seemed that it was going to take something special for Newtonmore to break the deadlock and that’s what happened on 70 minutes when John MacKenzie crashed home an unstoppable volley to make it 1-0. Beauly pressed back to try and level but it was Newtonmore who broke forward and Evan Menzies made it 2-0 on 77 minutes. Beauly never let their heads drop but Jamie Robinson clinched the Newtonmore win when he made it 3-0 on 83 minutes. Beauly acquitted themselves well and they will hope that an injury to defender Scott MacLeod will not keep him out for long.
Kinlochshiel 3 Kingussie 2 A last minute gaol from Finlay MacRae gave Kinlochshiel a 3-2 win over Kingussie at Kirkton. Lee Bain missed out for the Kings through suspension following his red card against Lochaber last week. Finlay MacRae got a soft opening goal for ‘Shiel on 16 minutes and Alasdair Nixon made it 2-0 just 5 minutes before the interval. Fraser Munro pulled a goal back 4 minutes into the second half and Thomas Borthwick squared the tie on 72 minutes. The match looked set for extra time until MacRae’s late winner. Kinlochshiel will now face Lovat in the semi finals.
Glenurquhart 2 Caberfeidh 0 Orion Group Premiership side Glenurquhart eventually beat Caberfeidh from the Marine Harvest National Division 2-0 at Blairbeg. With no goals in the first half, David Smart put the Glen ahead just 3 minutes after the restart. David Smart got his second goal of the afternoon after 63 minutes to clinch a 2-0 win. One sour point for Glenurquhart was a nasty facial injury to midfielder Ewan Brady which required a trip to hospital. Glenurquhart meet Newtonmore in the last four of the competition.
AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Oban Camanachd 5 Oban Celtic 0 Favourites Oban Camanachd came out on top in the much anticipated local derby against Oban Celtic at Mossfield. There was a minute’s silence ahead of throw up in memory of young Lochside Rovers player Scott Goldie who passed away suddenly the previous week. Oban Camanachd were without James MacMillan who served a one match ban for a points accumulation. Oban Celtic gave their all and they held their town opponents, who play two divisions above, until the closing stages of the first half. Oban Camanachd made the break-through on 41 minutes though when Iain Campbell put them ahead. Connor Howie added a second on his senior debut a couple of minutes later. Connor Howie got his second on 56 minutes to make it 3-0. A late Malcolm Clark double on 82 and 88 minutes put more gloss on the victory.
Taynuilt 0 Kyles Athletic 11 Kyles Athletic ran riot against Taynuilt at the Playing Fields. The Tighnabruaich side eventually ran out 11-0 winners with David Zavaroni getting a hat-trick, Dunkie Kerr and Roberto Zavaroni got doubles with the other goals coming from Rupert Williamson, Cammy Keith, Roddy MacDonald and Donald Irvine.
Kilmory 0 Inveraray 5 Kilmory went down 5-0 to the more fancied Inveraray at MacRae Park. An early double from Euan McMurdo on 18 and 19 minutes eased Inveraray into the game. Chris Crawford made it 3-0 on 63 minutes and Euan McMurdo completed his hat-trick on 79 minutes. Grant Griffin rounded off the win with a goal 6 minutes from time. Inveraray will now face Oban Camanachd with a place in the AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final at stake.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Glenorchy 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll are through to the last four after their 1-0 win over Glenorchy in their 1.15pm throw up at Yoker. Craig Anderson got the only goal of the game a minute before the break. Anderson ran onto a ball played towards the penalty spot and he rounded the keeper before tucking the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Glenorchy had the chance to equalise late in the game when referee Billy Wotherspoon awarded them a penalty. Jonathon Oates has taken over in the GMA goal since regular keeper Paul Creighton moved to Ireland and he saved the spot-hit. GMA will face Kyles Athletic in the semi finals.
RBS MacTavish Plate Quarter Finals Skye Camanachd 3 Lochaber 2 (after extra time) Marine Harvest North Division 1 side Skye Camanachd took an Orion Group Premiership scalp when they beat Lochaber 3-2 after extra time at Pairc nan Laoch. Skye were still without injured defender Shockie MacLennan but Neil MacVicar returned in defence. Lochaber were minus the suspended Martin Johnstone and Zandz Ferguson was another absentee. However Stuart Callison was free of suspension and he was joined on the bench by Neil MacDonald. The Islanders knew they would be in for a tough test against Orion Group Premiership side Lochaber and their task was made more difficult when a deflected Shaun Nicolson shot looped into the net after just 2 minutes. Skye’s Will Cowie had the ball in the net on 21 minutes but play was brought back because referee Dave Stafford had blown seconds earlier to award the Islanders a penalty. Will Cowie confidently converted from the spot to make it 1-1. Skye went in front on 41 minutes when Danny Morrison played the ball downwards into the net from above his head following a Gibbs MacDonald corner on the right. Lochaber pressed Skye in the closing stages and a stoppage time leveller from Shaun Nicolson took the tie into extra time. The winning goal came just 3 minutes after the restart when Will Cowie sent a backhand drive low into the Lochaber net. Will Cowie also crashed a shot off the bar and the victory takes Skye through to a semi final meeting with Lochcarron or Inverness on Saturday 17 May.
Strathglass 0 Fort William 7 Fort William were too strong for Strathglass; running out 7-0 winners at Cannich. Strathglass manager Callum Duff was without the services of Raymond Fraser who served the second game of a two match ban for his red card against the Newtonmore second team in mid-March. Fort William co-managers Victor Smith and Adam Robertson had Gary Innes available and he grabbed the opening goal on 13 minutes. Fort youngster Arran MacPhee helped himself to a first half hat-trick with goals on 17, 21 and 33 minutes to make it 4-0 at the break. Arran MacPhee capped a fine individual performance with his fourth and Fort William’s fifth goal after 69 minutes. Strathglass weren’t themselves and Daniel Stewart on 73 minutes and Gary Innes’ second goal of the game on 82 minutes sealed the 7-0 win. Fort William will meet Marine Harvest North Division 2 side Boleskine, who received a first round bye, in the RBS MacTavish Plate last four.
Balliemore Cup First Round Lochcarron 1 Aberdeen University 3 Lochcarron and Aberdeen University played the final Balliemore Cup first round tie at Battery Park and it was the Students who won through to the last eight of the competition. Lochcarron got off to a bad start when David MacCuish was red carded by referee Daniel MacRae after just 10 minutes following an off the ball incident with Bryan Slattery. Mark Fraser put the Aberdeen side ahead but Lochcarron player manager Ross Brown levelled. However strikes from Stuart Cameron and former Lochcarron player Kieran Murray gave the visitors victory. Aberdeen University now travel to Fife to play Aberdour in the quarter finals in three weeks’ time.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Inverness 2 Glenurquhart 2 Inverness and Glenurquhart shared the points following a 2-2 draw at the Bught Park. Much of the pre-match publicity surrounded the fact that the game would see brothers Allan MacLeod and Iain MacLeod manage their respective sides. Dougie Rankin put Inverness ahead after just 4 minutes. Referee Archie Ritchie awarded the Glen a penalty on 32 minutes when the Inverness keeper was penalised for charging a Glen forward inside the D. Daniel MacKintosh stepped up to shoot home the penalty. Glenurquhart went ahead a minute into the second half through Cairn Urquhart but Dougie Ranking brought Inverness back on level terms with a 58 minute strike. This was quite a physical encounter and Mark Sproule from Inverness and David MacLennan from Glenurquhart were both sent off following a scuffle on the hour mark. The point apiece means that both side climb the table; Glenurquhart to third place whilst Inverness move up a position to sixth place.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Strachur 1 Kyles Athletic 5 Kyles Athletic go top of the table after their 5-1 win over Strachur at Strachurmore. Iain MacLellan scored for the home side but a Roddy MacColl double and efforts from Brandon Wilson, David Martin and Gordon Whyte gave Kyles a good victory.
Lochside Rovers 3 Ballachulish 3 Ballachulish came from 3-0 down to earn a share of the points against Lochside Rovers in their noon throw up at Mossfield. There was a minute’s silence ahead of throw up in memory of young Lochside Rovers player Scott Goldie who passed away suddenly the previous week. The Oban side got off to a great start when Brian MacCallum put them ahead after 5 minutes and they carried that single goal lead into the break. Sean Morgan made it 2-0 a couple of minutes into the second period and when Daniel MacKinnon made it 3-0 on 51 minutes, Lochside looked in control. However a late Balla; fight back saw John MacDonald pull a goal back on 80 minutes. Scott Henderson made it 3-2 just 5 minutes from time and there was frustration for the Oban side when John MacDonald made it 3-3 with his second goal of the match deep into stoppage time and earn the visitors what could prove to be a vital point at the end of the season. Ballachulish sit second in the table, a point behind leaders Kyles Athletic but with a game in hand.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Glengarry 2 Kinlochshiel 1 Glengarry remain two points clear at the top of the table following their 2-1 win over neighbours Kinlochshiel at Craigard. The home side were without Ken Henderson and Stuart Gregory whilst the injured Aedan MacRae remained sidelined for ‘Shiel. Daniel MacLennan put ‘Garry ahead after 16 minutes but Neil Fraser made it 1-1 on 38 minutes. Daniel MacLennan got his and Glengarry’s second goal on 54 minutes and the strike means ‘Garry have won their opening three league matches. The only sour note for the home side came when referee John Matheson sent off George James Henderson.
Fort William 4 Boleskine 3 Fort William edged out Boleskine in a seven goal thriller at An Aird. The Fort raced into a three goal lead thanks to a Graham Campbell strike on 9 minutes and a Ryan Campbell double on 23 and 26 minutes. Dickie MacKenzie pulled a goal back for Boleskine on 34 minutes but Scott Knox restored Fort William’s three goal cushion with a strike 5 minutes from the interval. Boleskine’s Lewis Smith made it 4-2 on 58 minutes and although Ewan Fraser reduced the deficit to a single goal on 83 minutes, Fort William saw out the remainder of the game and they now leap-frog Boleskine into second place.
Lochaber 6 Skye Camanachd 2 With their first teams meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree, the Lochaber and Skye Camanachd reserve sides did battle at Spean Bridge. And it was the home side who came out on top, winning 6-2 to seal their first league victory of the season. The visitors were without Shaun Hedley and first team assistant manager Aonghas MacDonald played in goal. Kevin Ferguson returned from an arm injury for Lochaber and he made an important contribution for the home side with a hat-trick. Danny Delaney scored twice and Conor Sweeney got the other. John Murphy bagged both Skye goals.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Col Glen 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll beat league leaders Col Glen 2-1 in their 11.30pm throw up at Yoker. Former Bute player Neil McKirdy reduced GMA’s interval advantage when he pulled a goal back 5 minutes before the break. However there was no scoring in the second half so GMA remain third, a point behind leaders Col Glen with a game in hand.
Glenorchy 0 Inveraray 5 Glenorchy went down 5-0 to Inveraray at Mark Park. Glenorchy went into the match without Martin MacKillop who served the second game of a two match ban for his sending off in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup extra time defeat to Inverness a fortnight ago. However Sandy Leiper was free of suspension after serving a one match ban for his red card in the same game. A Fraser Watt hat-trick and goals from Neil Shaw and Robert Wood gave the visitors the points.

Marine Harvest South Division 3 Caberfeidh 2 Inverness 3 League leaders Caberfeidh suffered their first defeat of the season to bottom club Inverness at Castle Leod. Donnie Forbes put Inverness ahead on 21 minutes whilst Liam Girvan, who seems to have patched up his differences with the Highland Capital club, made it 2-0 just 5 minutes later. Cabers fought back in the second half and a double from the experience Stuart Kryzanowski on 59 and 72 minutes levelled the contest. It was Inverness who grabbed both points though when Donnie Forbes got his second goal of the afternoon a couple of minutes from time to make it 3-2 and record Inverness’ first league win of the season.
Strathspey Camanachd 2 Lochbroom 1 Strathspey Camanachd made it five games without defeat as a late Chris Cameron goal gave them a 2-1 win over Lochbroom in their 1.30pm throw up at Grantown Grammar School.
