The Shinty Round Up - Saturday 27 August 2022 | |
28 August 2022 There were cup finals and wins for Beauly, and the Newtonmore and Glasgow Mid Argyll second teams following the shinty action on Saturday 27 August 2022.
Mowi Premiership Kilmallie 1 Kinlochshiel 4 Kilmallie’s chances of Mowi Premiership survival look slim after they lost 4-1 against Kinlochshiel in their noon throw up at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie showed they won’t go down without a fight when Daniel Stewart gave them a 25 minute lead. However, Duncan DA MacRae replied a minute later before Duncan “WD” MacRae gave ‘Shiel a 34 minute lead. Goals late in the half from Keith MacRae on 40 minutes and John MacRae on 43 minutes had ‘Shiel 4-1 ahead at half-time. With no scoring in the second half, the result means Kilmallie remain three points from safety at the bottom of the table with only two games remaining whilst Kinlochshiel reclaim second place.
Caberfeidh 7 Fort William 1 Caberfeidh won for the fifth successive match, beating Fort William 7-1 in their 3pm throw up at Castle Leod. Caberfeidh took an early lead when Logan Beaton scored after just 8 minutes. Craig Morrison then netted twice on 10 and 43 minutes, either side of Kevin Bartlett’s 29 minute goal, to make it 4-0 at the break. Lewis Morrison pulled a goal back 5 minutes into the second half but Caberfeidh, and more particularly Craig Morrison, finished with a flourish as Morrison took his tally to five goals with strikes on 70, 86 and 87 minutes.
Kyles Athletic 0 Oban Camanachd 2 Oban Camanachd bounced back from the previous week’s narrow Artemis Macaulay Cup defeat to Kingussie by beating Kyles Athletic 2-0 at Tighnabruaich. Kyles boss Robert Baxter was without keeper John Whyte so Kieran Crystal came in between the sticks. Roddy MacDonald was also missing but his brother Innes MacDonald was named on the bench after being out with a broken hand. Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans fielded Daniel Cameron in attack – with Malcolm Clark and Daniel MacVicar just behind him and Daniel Madej in front occupying the full forward position - with Craig Easton coming into the defence. Connor Howe was rested so took a place on the bench whilst Innes Jackson was given a start at wing centre. Ross Campbell, Scott Robertson, Jamie Anderson and David Cameron were all unavailable, highlighting the strength of the squad. Oban Camanachd flew out of the blocks with Malcolm Clark giving them an opening minute lead. Daniel Madej played a ball from the left to the back post where Malcolm Clark had lost his marker and he crashed the ball high into the far corner of the net at the second attempt. Oban keeper Cammy Sutherland only had one save of note during the first 45 minutes whilst Ross MacRae and Blair Macfarlane were having a really good battle in the middle of the park. Referee Graham Cameron booked Oban Camanachd’s Daniel MacVicar following a tussle with Andrew King with the latter escaping a card. Oban Camanachd doubled their lead with the last action of the first half. The ball was played up to Daniel Cameron in a central position around 27 yards out and his turn and shot took a deflection off a defender’s stick and looped over the keeper, dropping just under the bar and into the net. Oban Camanachd’s Blair Macfarlane had to come off at half-time with a pulled muscle in his leg and David Lafferty came on in his place. MacVicar and King tussled again on 54 minutes. The foul was given to Kyles and MacVicar received a second yellow card, apparently for questioning the decision. Kyles played their spare player up front and whilst most of the second half was played in Oban Camanachd’s half, the visiting defence was on their game; especially Daniel Sloss and Louie Macfarlane. Jordan Kerr was introduced on the wing for the final 20 minutes for what was his first senior appearance of the season. The closest Camanachd came to a second half goal was a blistering Daniel Cameron shot from fully 30 yards out which stung the palm of keeper Kieran Crystal’s hand.
Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup Final Inveraray 1 Beauly 5 Beauly beat Inveraray 5-1 at An Aird to lift the Ferguson Shipping & Transport Balliemore Cup for the second time. Beauly took the lead through Euan MacCormick on 10 minutes when a long hit-in was touched onto him in a central position and he turned before shooting low into the corner of the net on his left side, beating keeper Scott MacLachlan on his right side. Beauly’s second goal came 3 minutes before the break when Robbie Brindle sent Sandy Elrick’s corner from the right low across the keeper to make it 2-0. The final was marred by a nasty injury to Inveraray’s Ross MacMillan on 38 minutes. MacMillan was caught on the heel by Angus Renwick’s swing and there was a delay of almost 15 minutes when the player was treated and then helped from to field on his way to hospital. Two more goals followed on the stroke of half-time. First, there seemed little danger when David MacLean gathered the ball in space on the Beauly left but his ball into the D was misjudged by keeper Scott MacLachlan and ended up in the net. However Inveraray, who created chances in the first half, showed they weren’t out of it when they pulled a goal back straight from the restart. Ryan MacKay was caught in possession on the Beauly right by Allan Cameron and Allan MacDonald found Campbell Watt on the left and his cross was driven home by substitute Lewis MacNicol at the left of the D. Beauly reaffirmed their grip on the final just 3 minutes into the second half when Ross Forbes made it 4-1. David MacLean exchanged passes with Calum Morrison from a free-hit before his ball into the D was stopped with his legs by Scott MacLachlan but Forbes was quickly onto the rebound to hook the ball over the keeper and Coll MacKay who on the goal line. David MacLean got his second on 62 minutes to seal victory. Sandy Elrick’s corner from the right was played on by Conor Ross with the ball breaking to David MacLean who finished low into the net on his backhand. Beauly, whose defender Ryan MacKay was named man of the match, deserved the win although the final margin was harsh on Inveraray and all that was left was for Beauly captain Conor Ross to come forward to receive his captain’s black silver-mounted caman from Jill Ferguson before being presented with the Balliemore Cup by Ally Ferguson, Group Managing Director from sponsors Ferguson Transport & Shipping. Steven MacLachlan was the match referee. The sides meet again in a Mowi National Division fixture at Braeview Park on Saturday 10 September 2022.
Mowi National Division Skye Camanachd 7 Oban Celtic 0 Skye Camanachd swept as side a depleted Oban Celtic side 7-0 in their 3pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Whilst Oban Celtic travelled with William MacEwan as their only substitute, and Andrew MacKenzie in charge in Dougie MacIntyre and Stephen Campbell’s absence, Skye were at full strength. Referee Des McNulty was officiating his first match in Portree and from his opening whistle, Skye went on the attack. The Islanders broke Oban Celtic’s resistance on 9 minutes. Jordan Murchison’s shot was saved by Celtic’s stand-in keeper Joe MacVicar but the rebound came to Sorley MacDonald who slammed the ball home at the second attempt from the left of the D. Skye went on to score six more times during a devastating 22 minute spell. Jordan Murchison added a second from close range on 21 minutes following an unselfish James Pringle cut-back and Murchison completed his hat-trick with efforts on 27 and 29 minutes. First, William MacKinnon slipped a short ball to his brother Ross MacKinnon in midfield. Ross MacKinnon sent the ball long to Jordan Murchison and he turned and bulleted a shot by the keeper. Then, Celtic keeper Joe MacVicar made quick saves from Jordan Murchison and James Pringle but he was helpless as Murchison crashed the rebound home from wide on the left to make it 4-0. Sorley MacDonald got his second on 32 minutes following a nice passing move involving Will Cowie and James Pringle. MacDonald used his experience to calmly stroke the ball by the keeper. Will Cowie was injured in the move and was replaced by Taylor Matheson. The Oban Celtic defence was over-worked and frustrations rose and referee Des McNulty had a calming word with Andy MacDonald following a couple of rash swings when challenging Somhairle MacDonald. Jordan Murchison got his fourth goal of the game on 39 minutes with a spectacular strike, high into the goal following some more good build up play. As the half drew to a close, Skye claimed for a “kick” inside the D but with referee Des McNulty waving away their claims, the ball broke to Ross MacKinnon midway inside the Oban Celtic half and he sent a glorious drive which dipped under the crossbar to make it 7-0 with 43 minutes played. Skye introduced Ross Gordon and Martin Pringle at the break. Both players were late arrivals after attending John MacKinnon’s funeral in Sleat. The second half lacked the zip of the first period, due in no small part to a smarter Oban Celtic performance who deployed full centre Neil Carmichael in a deeper role. Skye also lacked the intensity of the opening period and the closest they came to extending their lead was on 73 minutes when Joe MacVicar made a terrific double save to deny Ross Gordon and then Jordan Murchison. The win takes Skye to within two points of league leaders Beauly with a game in hand as the championship race hots up.
Aberdour 3 Lochaber 3 Lochaber’s Iain Fyfe scored the only goal of the first half on 41 minutes but David MacKenzie levelled 10 minutes into the second half. Lochaber regained the lead through Gregor Cameron on 65 minutes but Aberdour drew level for a second time through Alex Mitchell on 74 minutes. When Stuart Downey netted on 84 minutes, Aberdour led for the first time in the game and were within touching distance of that elusive first win. However, there was heartbreak for the home side when Gregor Cameron claimed his second goal of the game in stoppage time to make it 3-3. This means that Aberdour trail second bottom Strathglass by two points and their remaining game is against ’Glass in Cannich. Strathglass’s only other fixture is against league leaders Beauly.
Strathdearn Cup Final Lovat 1 Newtonmore 7 The Newtonmore second team secured the Strathdearn Cup following a 7-1 victory over the Lovat second team at Smith Park, Farr. Lovat went into the match as holders after coming from 4-0 down to win last year’s final following a penalty shoot-out. However, this was to be Newtonmore’s day and talisman Glen MacKintosh led by example, putting his side ahead on 9 minutes. MacKintosh came deep before playing the ball out to the right to Craig MacLeod and when the ball came back into the goal area MacKintosh sent it high across keeper Ronan MacMillan from just right of centre. Not content with that, Evan Menzies made it 2-0 a couple of minutes after. Craig MacIsaac broke down the left and he found Craig MacLeod in a central position. MacLeod saw his shot saved but Menzies turned home the rebound from the right of the D. Lovat player / manager Raymond Rennie pulled a goal back on 13 minutes. Rennie took a short pass from Ryan Ferguson on the right before turning and blasting the ball waist-high across the keeper. Craig MacLeod restored Newtonmore’s two-goal cushion a couple of minutes after the hour, running in from the right before stopping and hammering the ball home. Craig MacIsaac made it 4-1 from the penalty spot on 67 minutes after Evan Menzies had been brought down inside the D. MacIsaac fired low into the net. ‘More pulled further away, scoring three more times during the final 10 minutes. Evan Menzies got his second on 80 minutes when he needed no invitation to fire the ball home from the left of the D after Craig MacLeod’s high corner from the left was knocked into his path by a Lovat defender. Glen MacKintosh also scored again just 3 minutes later. The former Scotland forward took part in a throw-up at the left of the D and when the Lovat defence missed the chance to clear, MacKintosh showed desire to win the ball and bustle his way through to score on his backhand, low into the net. Young Charlie Ferguson had a fine game for Newtonmore so it was fitting that he rounded off the scoring on 85 minutes. Cameron McNiven’s clearance out of defence launched a ‘More attack with Charlie Ferguson running half the length of the park before exchanging passes with Glen MacKintosh and shooting low into the net to the keeper’s right side. In a change of referee, John Matheson replaced Iain Kennedy to take charge of the final. Newtonmore captain James Ross was presented with the Strathdearn Cup by Camanachd Association Director Kirsty Deans. The sides will meet again in the HIS Sutherland Cup Final at Blairbeg, Drumnadrochit on Saturday 10 September 2022.
MKM Building Supplies Oban Bullough Cup Final Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Kilmory 0 The Glasgow Mid Argyll second team lifted the MKM Building Supplies Oban Bullough Cup following a 2-0 victory over Kilmory at the Taynuilt Sports Field. Mowi South Division 1 side GMA went into the final as favourites against their South Division 2 opponents but neither side could find the net during the first 45 minutes. There was a west coast twist to the win as former Kinlochshiel player Aeden MacRae gave GMA a 48 minute lead with former Lochcarron player and manager Ross Brown doubling their advantage on 84 minutes. The more experienced GMA side deserved the win with Kilmory Keeper Steven Gilmour named man of the match after making several brilliant saves throughout the 90 minutes. Craig Scott was the match referee.
Mowi North Division 1 Glengarry 3 Glenurquhart 4 The Glenurquhart second team edged out Glengarry 4-3 in their 7pm throw up at Craigard. All the goals came in the first half with Lewis MacLennan giving Glenurquhart a 4 minute lead but Nick Dalgety levelled on 11 minutes. The visitors raced into a 4-1 lead with Angus MacCallum on 14 minutes, David MacLennan on 24 minutes and a second from Lewis MacLennan a minute later putting them in control. However, Glengarry were given hope when Shaun Nicolson scored on 42 minutes and another from Nick Dalgety a couple of minutes after made it 4-3 at the interval. Despite there being seven goals during the first half, there was no further scoring so Glenurquhart took the points.
Glengarry 6 Kingussie 2 Glengarry bounced back from their Glenurquhart defeat to beat the Kingussie seconds 6-2 at Craigard. Jack West gave ‘Garry a 5 minute lead with John MacKinnon making it 2-0 on 15 minutes. Raymond Robertson added a brace on 21 and 32 minutes to make it 4-0 at the turnaround. Kingussie rallied after the restart with Peter Dickson on 56 minutes and Robert Shiells on 61 minutes making it 4-2. That’s the way it stayed until Nick Dalgety made it 5-2 a couple of minutes into stoppage time and John MacKinnon’s second completing the scoring a minute later.
Caberfeidh 1 Fort William 3 The Fort William colts ran out 3-1 winners against the Caberfeidh colts in their noon throw up at Castle Leod. Scott MacLachlan gave Cabers a 5 minute lead but Struan Stephen’s double on 15 and 17 minutes turned the match Fort William’s way. Rhys Kennedy sealed the win with a goal on 81 minutes.
Skye Camanachd P Kinlochshiel P The Skye Camanachd reserves and the Kinlochshiel reserves had hoped to reschedule their match for Friday evening at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree to attend the funeral of John MacKinnon in Sleat the following day. However, this wasn’t possible so the match will be rescheduled for later in the season.

Auryn Kerr scored opener on 20 minutes to put the visitors ahead and Dan MacDonald extended their advantage with efforts on 38 and 75 minutes. Bute’s Scott Harvey was sent off by referee Lachie Wood on 75 minutes with Craig Fisher pulling a goal back a couple of minutes later. Col Glen now lead Bute by four points with two games remaining. However the Islanders do have two games in hand with the sides still to meet at Glendaruel meaning we are in for an interesting run-in.

Torrin Cairns gave Beauly a 7 minute but his strike turned out to be the only goal of the first half. However, a goal-glut followed after the restart with Kilmallie’s Scott Campbell levelling on 54 minutes. Finlay MacLennan put Beauly back in front a minute a minute after only for Martyn Cameron to make it 2-2 on 61 minutes. Torrin Cairns put Beauly in front for a third time on 64 minutes with his second goal of the game and this time they stayed ahead. Finlay MacLennan’s second on 70 minutes made it 4-2 with Lee Dunbar adding a quick-fire double on 73 and 74 minutes to seal the win and a place in next season’s Mowi North Division 1.

Deek Cameron played for Fort William throughout the 90s and is famously remembered for scoring the fastest goal ever recorded in a Camanachd Final, after just 7 seconds, when Fort William beat Kingussie 1-0 in Glasgow in 1992. He now equals the record for most Camanachd Cup Finals refereed, previous set by John Henderson with four. Deek said: “I am delighted to be awarded my fourth Camanachd Cup Final and getting the opportunity to equal the record for final appearances by a referee. “If this final is anything like the previous finals I have officiated, it should be a classic. “With arguably the best two teams in shinty at this moment taking part, Macaulay and MacTavish Cup winners Kingussie playing on a familiar surface and Lovat looking to make amends for their last three appearances, this should add some real spice. “I always enjoy Camanachd Cup Final day, the build up to the match and of course the pleasantries afterwards. I have a very capable support team backing me up and I hope to provide a physical but fair final for the spectators and watching public to enjoy.” The rest of the officiating panel is: Goal Judges: Martin MacLean & Des McNulty Fourth Official: Willie MacDonald Linespersons: Andrew Grant McKenzie, Caitlin Mutch, Jamie MacPherson & Martin Bell |
