31 March 2013 The first cup action of the new season took place on Saturday 30 March 2013.
Co-operative MacTavish Cup – First Round Newtonmore 5 Fort William 3 (after extra time) The only all-Orion Group Premiership tie of the Co-operative MacTavish Cup first round turned out to be an epic battle between Newtonmore and Fort William at the Eilan. Newtonmore had to come from 3-1 down to eventually win 5-3 after extra time against a Fort William side which lost Liam McIntyre and Gordie MacKinnon with hand injuries. Duncan Rodger put the Fort ahead on 4 minutes and when Gary Innes added a second on 13 minutes, a shock looked on the cards. John MacKenzie made it 2-1 on the stroke of half time only for Gary Innes to get his second a couple of minutes into the second half to restore Fort William’s two goal advantage. Danny MacRae made it 3-2 on 65 minutes but the Fort stayed in front until the final minute of the game when John MacKenzie’s second of the afternoon took the tie into extra time. Danny MacRae got his second on 101 minutes to put ‘More ahead for the first time in the afternoon and a goal from substitute Fraser MacKintosh on 113 minutes sealed a 5-3 win. To add to the drama, Danny MacRae missed a second penalty for Newtonmore and referee Evan MacRae red carded Steven MacDonald for the home side and Niall MacPhee for the visitors.
Skye Camanachd 1 Kingussie 1 (Kingussie won 3-2 on penalties) It took a sudden death penalty shoot-out to separate Skye Camanachd and Kingussie at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Kingussie, who were without Ryan Borthwick and Barrie Dallas, edged the first half without being able to find a way past home keeper Michael Nicolson. The Islanders, who were without the injured Chris Rose and Iain Nicolson who was working, had the better of the second half and they took the lead on 79 minutes when Neil MacVicar worked his way through the heart of the Kings’ defence. His initial shot was saved by keeper Craig Dawson but MacVicar tucked the rebound into the net to the delight of the home defence. However there was to be a cruel ending for Skye as they conceded an injury time free-hit around 15 yards from goal following a foul on substitute Rory MacKeachan. In a move from the training ground, Fraser Munro looked to take the free-hit but stepped back at the last minute which allowed Paul Gow to slip the ball to Munro and he sent and unstoppable shot into the roof of the Skye net. There wasn’t enough time left to restart the game. The extra-time period was even with both sides having chances but there was no further scoring. The first five penalties ended even at 2-2 with keepers Michael Nicolson and Craig Dawson making fine saves. In the end it took fourteen penalties to separate the sides and it was Paul Gow who converted the all-important spot-hit. Neither side deserved to lose this tie and Skye will rue missing two penalty opportunities to win the tie. Ally “Spod” MacLeod and Shockie MacLennan were best for Skye with Fraser Munro and Louis Munro top Kingussie performers.

Finlay MacRae got ‘Shiel off to a great start with a goal after just 5 minutes. Lovat’s Sam Ferguson scored the only goal of the first half and Calum Farquharson grabbed a second on 65 minutes. Chris Hollysong pulled a goal back on 71 minutes but Lovat held on to go second in the league.
