28 April 2013 It was back to league action for most senior shinty teams on Saturday 27 April 2013 with the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup the main event for reserve sides.
Orion Group Premiership Inveraray 1 Newtonmore 4 Newtonmore leap-frogged Inveraray to go top of the table following their 4-1 win in their 3pm throw up at the Winterton. Inveraray were without the injured Chris Crawford although Douglas Dando is nearing full fitness. Newtonmore have had a growing injury list this term, including defender Rory Kennedy, and this has seen some of their youngsters get their chance. ‘More’s Michael Russell was the unlikely scorer of the only goal of the first half on 28 minutes. Calum Binnie made it 2-0 a minutes into the second half and Danny MacRae added a third just 60 seconds later. Chris Sellar made it 4-0 on 82 minutes and although Norman Campbell put through his own goal a minute later, it is Newtonmore who return to the top of the table and on this form, they could be there for some time.
Kingussie 3 Kyles Athletic 2 Kingussie came from 2-0 down to beat Kyles Athletic 3-2 at the Dell. Both sides were short of their full team with Lee Bain, Ryan Borthwick and Rory MacKeachan missing for Kings whilst Kyles’ injury list included defenders Andrew King, Calum Miller and Sandy MacVicar. Kyles made the better start and a double from early substitute Roberto Zavaroni on 5 and 15 minutes put them 2-0 to the good. However a Fraser Munro goal, which seemed to deflect off Kenny MacDonald's caman a minute from the break seemed to lift Kingussie. Rory Borthwick levelled the contest 5 minutes into the second period when he netted from a rebound and Thomas Borthwick got what proved to be the winner on 53 minutes.
Fort William 0 Lovat 6 Lovat were too strong for injury hit Fort William as they ran out 6-0 winners in their 3pm throw up at An Aird. The Fort’s absentees included Liam McIntyre, Gordie MacKinnon and Sean Cameron. Lovat manager Allan MacRae is beginning to see Greg Matheson and Kevin Bartlett form a good partnership in attack and it was Scotland U21 cap Matheson whole grabbed all the headlines from this game. He claimed a hat-trick with goals on 32, 49 and 51 minutes to give the Balgate side a 3-0 lead. Kevin Bartlett added a fourth on 65 minutes and Lorne MacKay got in on the act a couple of minutes later. Greg Matheson got his fourth and Lovat’s sixth on 75 minutes to round off a good victory.
Oban Camanachd 0 Glenurquhart 2 Glenurquhart picked up two vital points when they beat Oban Camanachd 2-0 at Mossfield. Glenurquhart’s Andrew Corrigan served a one match ban. Neale Reid put the Glen in front on 7 minutes and David Smart’s 67 minute strike gave Glenurquhart the win.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kilmallie 5 Caberfeidh 3 Kilmallie were made to work hard for a 5-3 win over Caberfeidh in their 3pm throw up at the Canal Parks. Grant MacKenzie got Kilmallie off to a great start with a goal in the opening minute. Liam MacDonald doubled their lead on 10 minutes but Cabers fought back to square the game with goals from Lee Nicol on 19 minutes and Blair Morrison on 26 minutes. However Kilmallie crucially got their noses in front when Liam MacDonald got his second a minute before the interval. John Stewart made a return from injury and he made it 4-2 on 55 minutes and Mark Graham added a fifth on 83 minutes. Ally MacLennan reduced the deficit 4 minutes from time but Kilmallie took the points.
Skye Camanachd 4 Strathglass 3 A Stewart Grant goal just 2 minutes from time gave Skye a 4-3 win over Strathglass at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Danny Morrison got Skye off to the perfect start when he put them in front after just 50 seconds. However the Strath were level after 3 minutes when Robert Geddes fired home. Ally MacAdams put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot a couple of minutes before the break and when substitute Darren Reid capitalised on a defensive mistake on 53 minutes to make it 3-1, things looked bleak for Skye. However the introduction of Nui MacDonald and Iain Murray in attack, and Steven Morrison pushing forward to join them, changed the course of the game. Iain Murray reduced the deficit on 73 minutes and Danny Morrison’s second goal of the afternoon 5 minutes from time squared the game at 3-3. The winning goal came from another substitute, Stewart Grant, who pushed forward from midfield to score following a goalmouth scramble with just 2 minutes remaining. It was a great fight-back from Skye but the outcome was tough luck on Strathglass who looked in control with just 17 minutes remaining.
Inverness 1 Beauly 9 Beauly recovered from the loss of an early goal to beat Inverness 9-1 at the Bught Park. Beauly were without Jack MacDonald who started a two match ban but Conor Cormack was free of suspension. Stevie Munro put Inverness ahead on 10 minutes but Conor Ross equalised on 19 minutes. A David MacLean double on 21 and 37 minutes to put Beauly 3-1 up. It then became the Marc MacLachlan show as the Beauly full forward found the back of the net five times on 38, 42, 55, 60 and 61 minutes to make it 8-1. Sean Stewart got Beauly’s ninth 5 minutes from time. Beauly remain second in the league to Kilmallie with both sides on ten points. However they did their goal difference no harm with the margin of this victory.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Glenorchy 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll go a point clear at the top of the league following their 3-0 win over Glenorchy at Yoker. Ben Dalgety gave GMA an 18 minute lead and Euan Forsyth added a second 4 minutes before the break. Craig Anderson sealed the 3-0 win with a goal 5 minutes from time.
Aberdour 2 Oban Celtic 0 Darren Coyle gave Aberdour a 15 minute lead in their 3pm throw up against Oban Celtic at Silver Sands. David MacKenzie added a second on the hour mark as Aberdour go second in the table.
Bute 5 Taynuilt 0 Robert Walker weighed in with a hat-trick as Bute beat Taynuilt 5-0 in their 3pm throw up at the Meadows. Neil McKirdy and player / manager Graham Fisher got the others.
Kilmory 1 Strachur 3 This match was switched to Kilmory but Strachur still took the points with a 3-1 win. James Roy, Iain Wilson and Rhys Campbell were all on target for Strachur with Ally MacLennan replying for the home side.
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup – Second Round Kingussie 1 Ballachulish 3 Holders Kingussie are out of this year’s competition as they lost 3-1 to Ballachulish in their early match at the Dell. Ronald Ross featured in defence for the Kings but they fell behind to a Lorne Brown strike on 18 minutes. Brown added a second a couple of minutes into the second half. When referee Ronnie Campbell awarded the visitors a penalty on 69 minutes, former Fort William player John MacDonald stepped up to add a third. Chris Hollysong pulled a goal back for Kingussie 5 minutes from time but is Balla who are through to the next round.
Newtonmore 10 Kyles Athletic 2 Newtonmore were convincing winners against Kyles Athletic at the Eilan. Calum Stewart scored on 7 and 20 minutes to put ‘More 2-0 ahead. Sam Richardson added a third on 24 minutes and Neil Stewart made it 4-0 on 37 minutes. Gavin Martin pulled a goal back for the visitors on 38 minutes but Sam Richardson got his second a minute later to restore the home side’s four goal advantage. Calum Stewart made it 6-1 on the hour mark to complete his hat-trick. David Boyle netted for Kyles a couple of minutes later but Drew MacDonald on 73 minutes and Calum Stewart again on 72 minutes made it 8-2. Drew MacDonald’s second on 80 minutes made it 9-2 and Calum Stewart took his personal tally to five goals with a strike a couple of minutes from time.
Fort William 3 Glenurquhart 1 Fort William beat Glenurquhart 3-1 in their noon throw up at An Aird. Alexander MacMillan put the Fort ahead on 27 minutes and Josh McGhee made it 2-0 just 3 minutes later. Calum Miller pulled a goal back on the hour mark but Josh McGhee got his second on 68 minutes to clinch a 3-1 win.
Beauly 1 Lovat 5 Lovat came from a goal down to beat Beauly 5-1 in their derby tie at Braeview Park. Martin MacFadyen gave Beauly a 12 minute lead but Graeme MacMillan replied for Lovat just a minute later. Euan Ferguson put Lovat ahead a couple of minutes into the second half. Graeme MacMillan got his second on 65 minutes whilst Euan Ferguson did like-wise a couple of minutes later. Manager’s son Graeme MacMillan had the final say when he completed his hat-trick 12 minutes from time to seal a 5-1 triumph.
Kilmallie 1 Lochaber 6 Lochaber beat Kilmallie 6-1 in their noon throw up at the Black Parks. Kevin Ferguson and Martin Paterson got doubles and Duncan MacKinnon and Ryan Toal were also on target for the Spean Bridge men. Bryan MacKay got a consolation goal for Kilmallie.
Inveraray 3 Lochcarron 4 Lochcarron raced into a 3-0 lead in their tie against Inveraray at the Winterton. However the home side introduced Russell MacKinlay at the break and in the end, Lochcarron held out for a 4-3 victory. Andrew Stewart and a Russell MacKinlay double counted for Inveraray whilst a Ross Brown hat-trick and a goal from Kenny Cushnie put the Battery Park side through to the next round. Lochcarron’s David MacCuish was red carded by referee David Mitchell.
Col Glen 0 Lochside Rovers 5 Lochside Rovers are through to the next round after a 5-0 win at Col Glen. Brian MacCallum was their main man again with four goals whilst Scott Dempster got the other.
Glengarry W/O v Ardnamurchan Glengarry are also through to the next round after Ardnamurchan were unable to raise a team for their tip to Craigard.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Aberdeen University 2 Kinlochshiel 2 Aberdeen University came from behind twice to earn a point against Kinlochshiel in the Granite City. Sandy MacDiarmid was suspended for the visitors. Donald Nixon put ‘Shiel ahead after 31 minutes and they took this advantage into the break. The Students fought back and Willie Hunter made it 1-1 on 58 minutes. Aedan MacRae put the west coast side back in front but Willie Hunter scored his second goal of the afternoon just 4 minutes to square the game.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Bute 3 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Bute beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-1 in their noon meeting at the Meadows. Chris McGowan bagged a brace for the Islanders with Liam Poole getting the other. Chris Brunton countered for GMA.
Aberdour 1 Tayforth 1 Aberdour and Tayforth shared the points in their noon throw up at Silver Sands. Chris Bowerman was on target for the home side with Eoghan MacIsaac replying for Tayforth.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Strathspey Camanachd 2 Lochbroom 6 Lochbroom join Boleskine, Lochaber and Kilmallie on the ten point mark at the top of the table after their 6-2 win over Strathspey at Freuchie Park. Andrew Hay and Gavin Wood scored for Strathspey but an Neil Fraser hat-trick and goals from Steven Bellshaw, Sandy Urquhart and Jamie MacFadyen, back in the side, gave Lochbroom the points.
Caberfeidh 3 Inverness 1 Second half goals from Andrew MacMaster and Calum MacCulloch gave Caberfeidh a 3-1 victory over Inverness. Paul Ross looked to have given Cabers an interval lead with a 44 minute strike but George MacInnes levelled on the stroke of half time. Andrew MacMaster put the home side back in front 5 minutes into the second half and a 77 minute effort from Calum MacCulloch sealed the points. |
