24 June 2013 Bute, Lochcarron and Ballachulish will all have cup finals to look forward to following the shinty action on Saturday 22 June 2013.
Balliemore Cup - Semi Final Strathglass 3 Bute 5 Robert Walker was again the Bute hero, scoring four times as the Islanders beat Strathglass 5-3 at Jubilee Park to reach the Balliemore Cup Final. Strathglass were without the suspended George Phimmister. Gordon MacMillan recovered from a knock on the ankle to play up front for Bute and he put his side in front on 20 minutes. Josh Fraser pulled a goal back for Strathglass on the half hour mark to square the tie at the interval. Bute went back in front when Robert Walker netted a minute after the restart but Josh Fraser got his second on 48 minutes and he completed his hat-trick a couple of minutes later to put the Strath 3-2 ahead. Strathglass kept their noses in front until 17 minutes from time when Robert Walker got his second to make it 3-3. Robert Walker took his tally to four goals with strikes on 78 and 86 minutes to give Bute a 5-3 victory. Bute have won the Balliemore Cup on their last three final appearances in 2004, 2006 and more recently in 2011 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree and they will meet the winners of this weekend’s semi final between Beauly and Kilmallie in this year’s final. Lachie Wood was the match referee.
Ballachulish 4 Lovat 3 (after extra time) Ballachulish will meet Lochcarron in the 2013 Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final following their 4-3 extra-time win over Lovat at An Aird, Fort William. Lovat led 2-0 at the interval thanks to a 40 minute Fraser Gallacher strike and a goal from Jamie Matheson on the stroke of half time. Michael Slezas pulled a goal back on 54 minutes and ‘Balla’s captain Alan Clark, who had been pushed into attack following injury, drew the sides level on 77 minutes. Alan Clark was proving to be a handful for the Lovat defence and he put the Jubilee Park side in front a couple of minutes later. However Jamie Matheson got his second strike of the afternoon 5 minutes from the end of the regulation 90 minutes to take the tie into an extra time period. Alan Clark was the Ballachulish hero as he struck on 100 minutes to take his side through to the televised final which will take place at Boleskine’s pitch at Farr on Saturday 27 July 2013. Ballachulish will now anxiously wait on news on Lorne Brown and their captain Alan Clark who picked up injuries in the game. John MacLeod was the match referee.
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup - Semi Finals Lochcarron 4 Fort William 2 Lochcarron are through to their first Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final since 1971 after they beat Fort William 4-2 in the heavy rain at the Bught Park, Inverness. Fort William enjoyed the early pressure and only goal goalkeeping from Lochcarron’s Peter MacKenzie prevented them from taking the lead. However the Fort did go in front on 26 minutes when Davie Duncan capitalised on a defensive error to put his side ahead. Lochcarron came back into the game and Gregor Cushnie finished off a sweeping move to level just before the interval. Fort’s U17 striker Alexander MacMillan put his side back in front with a fine solo goal just before the hour Lochcarron levelled for the second time when Sean MacCuish collected a Ross Brown pass and fired a great 20 yard shot past Fort keeper Garry MacKay into the back of the net to make it 2-2. With 15 minutes remaining, Gregor Cushnie latched onto a rebound after Garry MacKay had saved from Ross Brown and he scored to put Lochcarron ahead for the first time in the tie. Fort William pressed hard to take the tie into extra-time but they were undone when a breakaway move from Lochcarron saw Davis Bauermeister and Ross Brown combined to set up Gregor Cushnie who shot home to complete his hat-trick and seal a 4-2 win. Lochcarron now have their first Sutherland Cup Final since 1970 to look forward to when, ironically, they beat this year’s final opponents Ballachulish 4-2 at Spean Bridge.
