Strathglass 1 Skye Camanachd 4 | |
18 April 2017 Skye Camanachd stay top of the Marine Harvest National Division following their 4-1 win over Strathglass at Cannich on Saturday 15 April 2017. Strathglass showed their ambition by successfully applying to the Camanachd Association to step up to the Marine Harvest National Division at the end of last season. They have made a good start this year, having already beaten Inveraray and drawn with Caberfeidh and Inverness. Hamish Myers has missed the early part of the season through injury. Skye’s Calum Gibb served the second game of a two match suspension whilst Steven Morrison, Neil MacVicar and Ruaraidh MacLeod were still on the injury list. Jordan Murchison picked up an injury at training through the week so he was also missing whilst Iain MacLellan was working. There was a call up for Skye Camanachd second team boss Kenny MacLeod to the fourteen player squad for this 3pm throw up. There was a minutes silence ahead of throw up to remember Mary Gillies, Portree who passed away earlier in the week. Mary’s son, John Angus Gillies, is a former Skye Camanachd player and current Grade 1 shinty referee and his son, Mary’s grandson, John Gillies, plays for the Skye Camanachd first team. A James Pringle double on 5 and 8 minutes gave Skye an early 2-0 lead. Pringle’s first came when the ball dropped to him around the penalty spot and he struck the ball on his forehand into the bottom left corner of the net. Better was to follow for the visitors just 3 minutes later as the ball fell for James Pringle in a similar area and this time he sent a shot high to the keeper’s right to make it 2-0. Stewart Grant made it 3-0 on the hour mark. Grant had initially taken a corner and when a Kenny Campbell drive deflected off a defender, the wing centre followed up to score. Danny Morrison added a fourth from a set-piece with 15 minutes remaining. Kenny Campbell flicked the ball to the back post for Morrison to score. Josh Fraser pulled a goal back for Strathglass 4 minutes from time but Skye took the points. The Islanders are a point ahead of Fort William at the top of the table but they have played a game more. Skye Camanachd and Strathglass meet again this coming Saturday, this time at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree, in the second round of the Balliemore Cup.
