Strathglass 0 Skye Camanachd 1 | |
12 May 2014 Skye Camanachd are through to the Balliemore Cup semi finals after their 1-0 win over Strathglass in a hard fought tie at Cannich on Saturday 10 May 2014. Strathglass boss Callum Duff named a strong side which included Ally MacAdams in defence and Robert Geddes in attack. Josh Fraser missed out. Skye manager John MacLeod welcomed Steven Morrison back after he missed the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup win over Glenorchy the previous weekend. However Kenny Campbell was unavailable. Iain Murray came in in place of assistant manager Aonghas MacDonald. The home side made a bright start, creating the game’s first chance. However Skye keeper Jamie Gannon was quick on his feet to turn the ball away. At the other end, Skye showed good movement from a free-hit on 10 minutes and Danny Morrison shot past the post. Shockie MacLennan and Danny Morrison both had shots off target on 11 and 15 minutes as the Islanders tried to test home keeper Steve MacLachlan. Skye manager John MacLeod made his first change 10 minutes before the break when Jordan Murchison came on for Danny Morrison. Skye started the second half in determined fashion and a Will Cowie shot went close on 50 minutes. Iain Murray came on for Ally “Spod” MacLeod moments later and, as play swung to the other end, Jamie Gannon was forced into action. A 20 yard drive from Jordan Murchison went past the post on 65 minutes and then Danny Morrison was re-introduced in place of Kenny MacLeod as Skye freshened up their attack. A super shot from Jordan Murchison flew into the back of the net on 67 minutes but the goal was ruled out by goal judge Eoghan Stewart as Allan MacKinnon was offside. With 20 minutes to go, it looked like one of these days for Skye when they just couldn’t score. However that changed on 70 minutes when the Islanders grabbed what was to be the only goal of the game. Will Cowie burst down the wing and appeared to be fouled but referee Archie Ritchie played advantage. Cowie crossed to Shockie MacLennan who took the ball down quickly on his stick and turned on his backhand before despatching the ball past Steve MacLachlan into the opposite side of the goal to make it 1-0. Jamie Gannon made a great save with his feet on 78 minutes to keep Skye ahead. Shockie MacLennan shot wide on 82 minutes as Skye looked to kill off the tie. Match-winner Shockie MacLennan picked up an injury 5 minutes from time and he came off with David Grant coming on at full forward. This was a tough fixture for Skye between two evenly matched teams. Skye join Aberdour, Ballachulish and Inverness in the Balliemore Cup semi final draw. The draw will be made along with that for the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup. This will likely take place next week, once this weekend’s Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup second ties are complete.
