Sorley MacLean Quaich | |
15 March 2022 Portree High School and Plockton High School will contest the Sorley MacLean Quaich at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Monday 28 March 2022. The event remembers Sorley MacLean, a Gaelic poet commonly recognised as one of Scotland’s greatest poets. Sorley was born on 26 November 1911 and raised on Raasay and after attending Portree High School, and a spell at the University of Edinburgh, he returned to Portree High School as an English teacher in 1934. His teaching career eventually took him to Plockton High School where he became Head Teacher in 1956. It is as a Gaelic poet that Sorley will be best remembered, receiving numerous accolades, and he became the first ever Freeman of Skye & Lochalsh in 1987. Sorley passed away 24 November 1996 aged 85 years. With thoughts of shinty never far from his mind, it is entirely appropriate that Portree High School and Plockton High School contest this Quaich in Sorley’s memory each year with the cream of west coast youth shinty on show. Throw up is at 2pm. |
