Skye Teams Vie For First Shinty Places | |
20 February 2022 After a two-year break, the first of two local First Shinty qualifiers took place at the Fingal Centre, Portree.
Primary 5 (& under) Tournament Six teams lined up for the Primary 5 (& under) sixes tournament on Saturday 12 February 2022 and this 10am start was an exciting affair throughout. The current restrictions meant spectators were not allowed to attend. Following the round-robin league games, South Skye A finished top of the pile, just ahead of Portree A with Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh and South Skye B following. South Skye A defeated Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh in the semi-finals with Portree A beating South Skye B in the other last four match. The final between South Skye A and Portree A was a thriller. Two late South Skye goals made it 2-2 after Portree had led 2-0. The extra-time period was end-to-end but there was no further scoring so penalties ensued with Portree A eventually winning the shoot-out 4-3. Portree A now go forward to the Primary 5 (& under) Ferguson Transport & Shipping National First Shinty Finals at Lochaber High School on Saturday 26 February 2022.
Primary 7 (& under) Tournament The Primary 7 (& under) tournament took place on Thursday 17 February 2022 Some teams were unable to participate because of covid but both Portree teams and teams from North End and South Skye all took part. Each team played eachother twice in the round-robin phase with North Skye and South Skye reaching the final. These teams had notched a win over the other in the group matches so a close final was expected and that is the way it proved. It eventually took extra-time and a golden goal to separate the sides with North Skye’s Lachlan Macleod getting the winner. North End’s Lachlan Macleod was named the player of the tournament. North End will now represent Skye at the Primary 7 (& under) Ferguson Transport & Shipping National First Shinty Finals at the Nevis Centre, Fort William on Saturday 26 February 2022.
Sarah Ross from Portree Active Schools and Shinty Ambassadors Molly MacKinnon and Leah MacLeod deserve huge credit for organising and running all events as do referees Alasdair Stewart and Oliver Langlands. |
